Whoa, hold your horses, you're only 13! o_@ A lot of people will surely try to burst your bubble. And whenever you get over there, Japan will burst it too. I hope you don't have any misconceptions that Japan is a happy anime la-la land, cause it's definitely not. Unless you want to spend all your time in Akihabara. If you are doing the high school exchange, then that's a good first step. A lot of people don't get to do it (I really wanted to). Consider it "getting your toes wet". I heard from some people that the only truly "Japanese" class you have is PE where you interact with the Japanese students. But other than that all your classes are in English (you do have to have a year of high school, even over there). After high school, either get into a college that has a sister college in Japan, or major in something relating to Japan or Japanese... or major in English so you can teach it over there for a job... cause trust me you need MONEY big time to survive over there. But be ready to spend at the least 2 straight years studying Japanese intensively at a school IN Japan, or else you'll never get anywhere with any kind of work. (And don't listen to those people who just learn to speak, but never learn to read or write; because you DO need to learn kanji.) And even after that... it's tough for a gaijin. I've heard of gaijin assistants to mangaka, but I think any gaijin mangaka has a better chance of getting published in their own country. |

first of all, what's your budget for your going-to-japan plan? well, unless you get a scholarship / someone who's willing to support your life there, otherwise it's rather tough.

Actually if she goes through a foriegn exchange program (which is usually just in high school), I believe they get paid allowances (about 50,000 yen a month) but there are fees to enter the program, the one I researched and wanted to do was about $1000+ for a year in Japan.. which isn't too bad actually, compared to someone just going over there without any program. But I don't think you can choose your host family.. which may or may not be a pleasant experience. The girl I talked to said her family was very very strict with her about curfews and such, and she eventually ended up staying in a Bhuddist temple. o_O |

tokyo u is very prestigious. first please get through high school with outstanding score or at least to the best of your abilty. i encourage you to do your best and take courses in japanese with vigorous study if this is truly your dream. you are only 13, so plan may change. i am headstrong with my goals, but they have change many times since then-- i am seventeen now and many circumstances in which i had no control over (and also those in which i did) have change my plans for my future. however i have learn to adjust my goals from those situation. apply to college in your home state and look into foreign/cultural exchange programs. please bear in mind school overseas when you are not resident is quite expensive and can be at least 30,000$ USD a year just to study. even scholarship or funding may be difficult to receive. i had to set aside my goal to study abroad at international christian university because of the general cost for one year-- not just for tuition, but the cost to travel between countries as well. the guilt of having to burden my family to death is something i did not want to deal with. good luck. |

Well first of all if you are in a foreign exchange program don't expect to be goin to tokyo, you might be end up in Nara or Hokkaido. If your goal is Todai you need to find your way around Tokyo which I don't think it's very hard to do since you can use subs and Tokyo is like a big circle. I've spent 2 weeks in tokyo and i think I need 15 hours to walk from Shibuya-Ginza-Akihabara-Marunochi-yoyogi park - shinjuku - back to shibuya (Or i might messed up the order, can't remember it very clearly!) You definetely need to learn kanji since stations name are written in kanji. Good luck on your journey
