It's depressing yeah, but that's the way the world is or has been for many people. That emotional realism is what makes it so incredible and beautifal for many viewers. But on a side note, this was his (Miyazaki's) only good movie IMO.

What's your favorite scene?

Mine is the girl's montage in the end. Really sad.

I haven't seen it yet but I heard of it somewhere before.

Note: Miyazaki Hatao has a bunch of great movies.

It was so sad at the ending when she died. It was a real good anime movie though, one of Hayao Miyazaki's best in my opion beside Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa and Howl's Moving Castle. This one was really sad though, sniff sniff. Poor kid.

sorry to pull up a more or less dead thread (and if someone else has already pointed this out), but i've seen the same piece of misinformation elsewhere on this site. miyazaki did not direct grave of the fireflies - the director was isao takahata.

i agree with y'all, btw - grave of the fireflies was an unforgetable movie that reminds us that the costly legacy of war lies heaviest on the children left behind and on subsequent generations.

I cried every time I watched the movie. It's one of those movies where it seems that it requires a lot of analyzing, not with the events that occurred but with the symbolism that is placed throughout the movie.

Grave of the Firelies is a truly beautiful movie, although it is probably the single most powerfully depressing movie that I have ever seen. The only movie that could compare is Shazzam, but that movie is depressing because it just sucks so badly *sniff*.

You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy. The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.
