black vs. white

my sister and i have had this arguement for quite sometime. she claims that black is the absence of color because it's a "solo" color. it doesn't mix with anything to form another color. i say white is the absence of color because when we erase something, black doesn't come out. and we can never draw on black paper (unless we're using a white pen). so which of the two do you think is the absence of color? |

Absence color? Black Paper? Don't forget black Chalkboards (some). If what you say is true, combining colors to form another, where one of the colors is black, then what do you say about people who are Light Black-Skinned. There are also 'White' People who are ½ black? ------- |

wait a minute, wth was I thinking of actual race...*hehehe-sweatdrops!!* ok, black anime characters. well technically, you don't use 'black' to color anime characters, it's more of a Brown - Dark Brown type color. ------- |

no no no no. i don't specifically mean anime characters. it could be any drawing! i'm basically talking about the colors itself. let's narrow it down to colors. paint, crayons, pastels. just colors. :D hmm... look at it this way, which one isn't a color, black or white? |

well to look at it your way... black and white can be used to draw, though white is hard to see I guess. And yeah, it's clear only on colored paper. I get what your saying now. ------- |

this is a hard question hmm...... about the thing where your sis said: "black doesn't mix with anything to form another color.", it's not really true coz if you mix black with other color it becomes blacker, thus it's another color same goes with white though. Black represents nothingness... white represents purity... i'm getting off topic. Black is the absence of color. coz in a black hole where there is no color it is black (cosmic). but what i really think both is the absence or color since they are not really part of the color wheel. if you mix it whith other color it only become lighter or blacker. |

Actually you can't say all the time, that black will become a much darker black, though I agree with you there, it's not the only result. If you use Pastels (I think that was what I used in school a while back for a Class Project), if you mix black + white = grey. Drawing, Painting, Coloring, can all have different results depending on the color. Black isnt just one color, there are more colors that 'look' like black, but there's a differnt texture of the color, meaning there can be like 5 dark blacks that look like black, when really, their 5-different types of black. ------- |

huh? I'm getting confused with all the black and white and colors... anywho... I got this from a website: "RGB is an additive color system, which means that color is added to a black background. Black is the absence of light and therefore the absence of color. Secondary colors, such as cyan, magenta and yellow, are created by combining the primary colors. The color white is achieved by adding the three primary colors together in equal amounts." n.n *insert epic picture here* |

Well, I think I'll have to go to black... ------------ But why bother? They're just both colors anyway... (Just kidding...)

hmm.. well, what my dad had to say about this was that in spanish, white is blanko, or blank. i'd have to say they both mix with different colors, but i still think white isn't a color. when you mix all of the colors in the known world, you'd probably get something close to black. you can never mix some colors and come up with white. therefore, black is a color and white is the absence of color. |

@Ryoko, with anime, you don't normally shade with black but with paintings (rare) or somehting that is obviously black, you use black. ------- |
Re: black vs. white

You knew that white is a combination of 7 colors right? |
Re: black vs. white

Black and white are BOTH actual colors.. neither is the absense of color they are both the Fullness of color. Clear isn't a color at all so that is the absense of color. Black usually represents nothing as in space and such but the black is really just the shadow FROM the nothingness.... White represents it a lot of the time because it is the first color people thing of sice you can put other colors on it and it's pure and light.. but white is just the reflestion of the light in nothingness.. so nothingness is the absense of color and that is clear and literaly nothing.. the white and black both can represent each side of nothingness coming from light and dark There is a world just around the corner of your mind, Where reality is an intruder and Dreams come true... |

I agree with rose, what color would you call a shard of glass, or air for example? Transparent is the state that should be called absence of color |

yes, it is~ bLack is the absence of coLor the 3 primary coLors of Light are red, green and bLue~ when you join 2 primary coLors of Light, you create primary coLors of pigment~: red and green makes yeLLow red and bLue makes magenta green and bLue makes cyan in additive coLor mixing, if you join green, red and bLue, you obtain white... so, you can say that white is aLL the coLors~ so, if you see a bLack object, that means that the object absorbs aLL the white Light therefore, bLack represents the absence of coLor~ that's what physics toLd me anyways~ ^^ EDIT~ that's why when you wear dark coLors, it feeLs hotter [especiaLLy when it's sunny..] it's because it absorbs most of the Light [pLus the heat]~ EDIT²~ uhmmm, but in actuaL drawing, i guess you can consider white as the absence~ when you mix the 3 primary coLors of pigment, you get bLack right~? so in pigment, i guess you can consider white as the absence m y . L i F E . i . t r a d e . i n . f o r . y o u r . P A i N . |
Re: black vs. white

err...i guess with just drawing and paints and stuff i'd have to say white would be the absence of color because black inks are very very very deep dark purples... (of course with physics class, all i know is white is all the colors (think of a prism) and other than that i think i'm close to failing...^__^) |

white is the absence of colour, because if you mix heaps of colours you get black there are no colours that can be mixed to get white. so black is pretty much every colour |

I think that black would be since it is the absense of light plain and simple |
