Let's face it... there are a lot of cool RPG bosses but most are WAY too easy for the final guy. However, many boss fights are memorable and often have crazy bad-ass music. (BTW when you're fighting an overly easy boss, do you ever make it harder to have more difficulty and fun?) Anyhow, post thoughts on RPG bosses, mainly end guys but all are welcome, and what you thought of them. One of my last new threads for a while (read signature) Final Fantasy 10 (Aeons)- You get auto-life? WTF? Thanks for baby-sizing what could have been one of the coolest RPG fights ever, Square-Enix! Oh well, think of it as a interactive cut scene... Final Fantasy 4, 2 on SNES (Zeromus)- The background was so tight, and back in 92' was the coolest thing I had ever seen, coupled with the pre-fight scene? BRILLIANT. That's using what's available to you, Square! Now if we can talk about his Meteo not doing 9999.... Chrono Cross (TimeDevourer)- One of the coolest fight songs, but also one of the EASIEST bosses. Saga Frontier (Red's Boss)- Easily one of the most fun battles anywhere, get this game if you see it, it is the cornerstone "Diamond in the Roth" game, and this battle is a double treat for fans of manga and comic heroes cuz' of all the themes, and the background is SO CRAZY, even by PS2 standards, another example of using what's available to you... Lufia (Your parents' battle in the Past)- The very first bosses are the End guys from the prequel; that was extremely cool, since you got the last level feeling in the very begining of the game, and you know it'll come back again later.. Secret of Mana (Mana Beast)- This boss is also your pet flammie (like a cute dragon that is also your airship) to many, but it's never been established AFAIK (as far as I know). And it is the problaby the coolest SNES battle, especially if you consider the emotional aspect of having to slay your own pet who is now bringing the End of the World; also the 3D effects were so dope, and the open background feels like you're at the edge of the world. The song, "Meridian Dance", is insane too. If the boss was crazy-hard it'd easily be the best RPG boss fight ever IMO. |

As the God of all things FF6 (3 SNES), I have to say that while Kefka's Final Tower was an easy fight it had insanely cool art and music, the songs were all boss-type remixes of earlier songs in the game too, a nice touch. I also liked how the bosses seemed to move "less" even though no enemies move at all in the game normally, it was like fighting the paintings of God or something! Thank you, Key, I understand. The U.S. is excellent comp, but I'll need all the help against the players Japanese and Korean... |

The optional boss in Digital Devil Saga. That guy is freakishly hard. Recommended to be at level 99 with max stats and a whole lot of luck on your side. In FFX, Braska's Final Aeon(Ject) is a really cool boss. He had great fight music, high amounts of HP and looked even better when he drew his sword. I count him as the final boss of FFX, Yu-Yevon is just a joke and boring as hell. I don't think of him as a boss. |

The fight against the final Dragon from the first Dragon Slayers Legend of Heroes game for the Turbo Duo had some pretty tight music for the time. The fight was pretty easy because I maxed out my characters. The game sticks out in my mind because it had some of the first anime sequences in an RPG I can remember. I think I may still have that game and soundtrack somewhere. *off to search for the CD*

The first anime scene I saw in a game was Astanyx on NES, and the boss moments were extremely memorable, in fact, this action game had cutscenes and drama before the SNES RPGs dominated this medium... |
Re: Shishio's RPG Boss Thread

Final Fantasy X definitely had some memorable boss fights (some of them memorable for the wrong reason). My favorites would definitely have to be... Braska's Final Aeon (It is a very andrenaline pumping fight.) Seymour Flux (I had to mention this guy because he was such a pain in the ass.) Yunalesca (Her too. Besides, it marked a turning point in the game.) Penance (This guy is definitely one of the hardest bosses that I have ever faced on any game. For final bosses I would have to say Chrono Trigger's takes the cake for me. He was very difficult when I first faced him.
You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy. The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.

The best boss that gave me a heart attack but still my favourite boss till now, has to be Sephiroth. When I first heard the battle music, I was like, WOW!! The music was really pumping me up. Not to mention that it was quite hard for me to beat Sephiroth, since I was such an idiot and fought him with 3 teams. With just 1 team, it was snapcake.

Yes. There are time the boss is just too easy either because you're a level up maniac that went around and L-U like 6x before finally bothering to move the story along or you're just that skilled. I'm the Level Up kind. |

fighting bosses are fun like fighting sephiroth just to relieve stress but man is sin hard in ff10 but my ultimate goals right now are to beat the weapons on ff7 |
Re: Shishio's RPG Boss Thread

Well on most game there is alwasy some secret bosses that are extremly hard to beat. My favorite o final boss is the egg from saga frontier 2. A "egg" has almost destroyed the whole world and finily as the last boss it change into som gigantig evil monster. Also the hardest last boss I ever have fighted. |

I'm not quite sure if one would classify it as an RPG, but no talk of bosses is complete without mentioning the game "Shadow of the Colossus". Sixteen bosses, each unique and challenging in its own right. Many times you even pitied the beasts as they died. Not to mention the sheer scale of them. Many of them as tall as skyscrapers, with no visible way of scaling them. Not to mention the music was top-notch. /EndPointlessIrrelevantRant |

Hey! That's right! Shadow of Colossus! That's kinda action game, actually. A bit of Action RPG, perhaps. The BGM is changing depending on how you manage to fight the bosses. That's kinda cool. I guess the most difficult RPG boss to defeat is the secret boss from Star Ocean 2nd story. In order to fight this big guy, before you enter Indelancio, go back to Expel planet and go to the secret dungeon with 10 floor basement. The last boss in the 10th floor is trully FREAKING HARD!!!! How to describe it..umm.. oh,that's right. My party average level is "252" and HE kicked the hell out of me in "5" seconds.. How'd you think of that? |
Re: Shishio's RPG Boss Thread

I would have to go with lunar 2 eternal blue for PS1 you dont get to many items... you can't go over 20 on each item so the last boss on that one was pretty hard plus it takes like an hour or two the beat the last boss so the items run out pretty fast |

I remember when I was six, fighting the red creature for the first time in Final Fantasy 7. I got my @$$ kicked. But now that I'm so awesome, I'm always too powerful for the boss fights. I usually play with them. I waste my time by casting negative status effects on "strong enemies" so the battle will last longer. I love just doing absolutely nothing so I can listen to the music too. When I'm supposed to fight Seymour for the last time in FFX, I'll eat some cereal or whatever as I listen to the theme song. When you fight the final form of Ultimecia in FF8, I like to cast scan on her so I can spin her around to the beat of the music. ~ S.A. |

I did scan on Ultimecia too, to see her crazy face thing... Just remebered a cool boss fight, Dark Cloud- The part where you see the little past story before you fight the final boss was so cool; the music and themes of grief with the fantastic graphics were stunning and at the time showed how PS2 would lead us into a new age of RPGs... Parasite Eve- Crazy evolution-themed battle in the standard quest, and the ending scenes were so beautifal with Aya (I named her Celes, Zelda, and I think I also used Aurora on my last tredge, the same name I'll use for my first daughter)... Example of that ending scene, barely does it justice because there are many chnaging colors and light effects...see the cutscene at BlueLaguna, I think it's .net, it's where I get all my RPG media. |

Why ARE those extra bosses so over the top? Is it just me are are they just a little too much some times? Like when you're fighting them you think, "no other boss in the game gave me THIS much trouble! Blast you to hell!" |

Yeah, but that's the point, since for some reason back in the day, the RPG Gods came together and it was declared that the final boss of any RPG, who is actually bringing destrucion to not just the world, but the ENTIRE universe, be much, much weaker than some dudes chilling on Earth. Like in FF7: a couple of the Weapons that Sephiroth's Awakening releases are MUCH stronger than he is...yeah that makes sense storywise and scientiffically. It actually started in FF1 with WarMech, I believe. I'd prefer the final boss always be the strongest, making the story much more prolific. The RPG gods have also declared that though the heroes have the power to destroy the world, they need a tiny metal key to open some weak, insignificant metal or even wooden door... |

Well that's the thing those "extra" bosses are optional.....they usually don't figure prominetly in the original story. They are just there to give the hardcore gamers some increased challenge....let's face it beating bosses like the Weapons in FF7 or Iseria Queen & Freya in Star Ocean or any other extra boss gives you a greater sense of accomplishment than beating the so called "Last" boss. To me getting to the last boss is the real challenge in RPGs....all the quests, missions, levelling up, finding the best items....spending all that time takes all the work. Yeah i agree the last boss should provide at least some challenge but it shouldn't be the "hardest"....if so than we don't need any of these optional bosses. Also these optional bosses don't really give you anything....in terms of best items. Usually some useless item stating you beat it. Which get me thinking....what game was the first to start this trend? I mean who started putting "optional" bosses...... |
