Anime endings these days....

Why is it that nowadays anime endings tend to be somewhat unfinished? There are many great animes that has disappointing ending in their final episode. Take for example Trinity Blood and Macross Zero. I'm not quite sure why those endings are unresolved, although I do have some hypothesis. 1. Bringing the possibility of a sequel or a second season. The creators are waiting to see if the anime's a big hit or not. If they are, they'll make a sequel / second season out of it. This is realy annoying by me. Take Kidou Senshi Gundam SEED, for example. The ending was clear. It's a happy one. The war ended. Yet they can still continue the show with Gundam SEED Destiny. Therefor, i find this reason to be lame. 2. The real ending will not be aired on TV, instead it will be on a movie / OVA. O.K. That's how business goes. Fine by me. But at least they can inform the audience first. At least before or within or right after the final episode. So that the audience, us, won't be confused. 3. Giving the audience a chance to perceive their own ending. This is the best reason out of all. Realy, the creators has to be very careful if they intend to do such a thing. Making an ending that gives the audience the freedom to imagine what's next is a very hard thing to do. A good example of a successful one is Hantsuki's (Hanbun No Tsuki Ga Noboru Sora) ending. They didn't tell all. But we know Rika and Yuichi will be fine. It's not like the hansome doctor gets in their way, nor Rika's mother are against them, and Yuichi has finally made his decision. So, whatever happened next, is never going to be bad. Good, huh? 4. The manga / novel in which the anime were based from has not been completed yet. I can understand this one. Well, at least we know that the second season is underway. Even if it's not, we can still hunt the manga. This is completely different from reason #1. It's better this way than the 1 chapter - 1 episode chasing. It happened to Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. Still a lot better than what's going on with Naruto and Bleach. For Guze's sake, what a mess they've done. I love Naruto and Bleach manga. But I can't really like the anime. The first few episode was awesome. But then, I got bored. I know the picture quality improves each episode. Not even that helps. As a result, for Naruto and Bleach, I'm now concentrating only on the manga and the word "narutard" is now well-known in "our" society. So... What I do I realy want? A nice 25 minutes of beautiful ending, where the characters got to enjoy a happy everyday life. One meaningless episode to close all the tension of the earlier episodes. No, even 10 minutes is enough. To cool the audience a bit. What about you guys? What do you guys think? |

I agree that endings have become more crappified overtime, but I think that the biggest problem are the "weak" endings. Anime is now so popular that there is no need to stand out or have the craziest ending or a complete closer, unlike back in the days with Evangelion and Sailor Moon. Just a happy ending will do. Also, I think a majority of anime is shying away from weird or controversial content to be safe, and that is creating less and less cool stories and endings. And on to the OVA thing, yeah I think it sucks when you have to see an OVA to watch the ending or continuation. That is just an unfortuante result of money motivating the anime world. |

I think making a controversial endng is not the only way to make a great story. There are always other alternatives. And I think that just by making a controversial ending won't do much good. I mean, yeah, Shin Seiki Evangelion was the first show ever to end up with the world's destruction. Death and rebirth. But let's face it, that's not the only thing making this show awesome. In Evangelion's case, first off we got the Mecha. Then the mental conflict. Then we got all those philosophy thing about boundaries, limits, existence and non-existence, etc. See? It's not all because of the ending. An ending should be a conclusion of all the previous episodes. It should solve everything. Okay, may be not everything, but at least most of them. An ending, by my opinion, has to be decisive. I think weak endings are undecisive endings. If the creators are really determined to involve the audience by perceiving their own ending or by imagining it on their own, it doesn't mean it has to be bias. Here's what I think. There are two fundamental elements in which the creators can choose to create an ending in which the audience are involved. 1. Decide what happened in the end, and let the audience judge whether it's a happy or a sad one. 2. Decide whether the ending is a happy one or a tragic one, and let the audience imagine what happens next. You can't just let loose both of them to the audience. It's like not telling story at all. Example to #1 : Hanbun No Tsuki Ga Noboru Sora. What happened in the ending is clear. Yuichi choose to be by Rika's side. Despite all the sacrifice he'll have to make in the future. Despite Rika isn't going to live long either. That's the decisive part. Now the audience's job is to decide whether that's a happy thing or whether it's a tragic thing. If the audience decides that that end is a tragic one, they'll feel sad about it. They'll be saying things like, "Poor Yuichi, it'll be hard for you two." Or something like that. Nonetheless, if the audience decides otherwise, they'll feel happy about it. They'll be saying things like, "Yokatta wa nee. Every life will end, sooner or later. Just do your best, both of you. Ano futari nara kitto daijoubu." Or something like that. Either way, the audience is involved. Another example is Full Metal Alchemist (Hagane No Renkinjutsushi). You've seen what happened. Now it's your choice, whether you're to be happy or sad about it. Example to #2 : Kannazuki No Miko. We know that it's a happy one. Enemies defeated and everything went back to normal. Then Kurusugawa Himeko met this someone with the other half of the seashell. Who is she? What'll happen next? That will be up to us. For me, either way is good. However, I'm really an old fashioned audience. Not #1 nor #2. I love #3. What's #3? Well, #3 is that both elements are present. A full-scale ending. all the audience needs to do is simply watching. Examples of this are Erementar Gerrad, Last Exile, (happy) and Shingetsutan Tsukihime (tragic). Well, that's me. Dunno 'bout you guys but I'm realy into Erementar Gerrad's ending. It's cute. |

One anime that had the worst ending for me (due to the creators (i think)) was hunter x hunter. they stopped at the climax forcing you to read the manga to figure out what happens any further. |

Yeah your right, most anime endings nowadays leave you feeling (huh) or (grrr..) or (what happened after that!!!) anyways all animes should have a "resolution" episode just to show how everything turns out. One anime that ruined it's ending for money... Love hina again, ohhh why dammit!!! |

Yeah...nowadays some anime's endings are really crappy. Especially when you come across an anime that you KNOW is gonna have a great ending becuase the beginning was so good. However, they disappoint you by showing you the worst ending you would imagine! -_- |

I used to think that was false until I went on a Kare kano spree, only to find that the end wasn't, well, the end...That did it for me. |
