Study Abroad Programs

Does anybody recommend specific program for studying abroad in Japan for a highschooler? I want to go study in Japan for at least an acedemic year before I get out of school. Also, what are good ways to save up for money to study abroad? Are there ways to receive scholarships? Thank you for your time. |

| My friend is in Japan now via AFS. I have no idea about the financial aspects though. The only thing that I understand is that you need to know Japanese and know that when you return you will be held back in a sense (as in if you leave before your junior year, when you return you'll still be a junior). I think the latter depends on where you go though. But I don't think I've ever heard of a scholarship for studying abroad... |

i know Japan's Ministry of Education (it's called Monbukagakusho in Japan) offers Monbukagakusho scholarships to foreign students for them to study in Japan. but so far i heard it's only for undergraduates, master degrees & doctorate degrees. not sure if there's one section for highschoolers. one suggestion is to get to befriend teachers from japan through the internet, and they can help you out. my classmate from Thai used this method a few years ago, and she really succeeded (she studied in a highschool in Chiba Prefecture, Japan for 10 months). but be careful when using this method, coz you won't know what kind of people you'll meet.

well i am going on a study abroad program through USAC which deals with people in college, over 18 as for money i got freeman asia and gilman scholarships maybe its best to go during college a lot more money is available and you are not as restricted in your activites |

Studying abroad can be really costly if one does not know how to manage the funds. but it is always good to get mixed into different cultures for a change. Really fun!  |

| Many high schools have exchange student programs with high schools in Japan. If your school doesn't have one, you'll have to wait until college and do their exchange student program, if that college has one for Japan exchange students. There are scholarships available for most programs, but many pay for at least some of your traveling expenses and you usually live with a home-stay family for the year, to cut down food and rent costs. But most of the cost is your responsibility. |

yay studyign abroad wuld be cool but no it'll be dificult to adjust since my best friends are here and my parents work here but this wuld really be cool! ^.^ ~banzaii

OMGGG!!!!! YAAA!! I want to study abroad the first semester of my jr yr. (im 15 sophmoriee in highschooll<333) search 'study abroad' on google, Intrax is a really good program. That is one my parents are looking at, scholar ships are REALLY helpful, it can cost quite a bit of money. (a three week semeniar is 6,500) most programs also require 6months japanese (minimal - this was hard for me to meet, that requirment... <33) But you can do it!!! e-mail me anytime we can talk!! havee a good day!! <33 :)) good luck!!! :)) |

I wanted to head over to Japan and go to school there. I have family members over there but we haven't contacted them in like, a million years. Going to school there for my last year of HS would be pretty sweet, yet impossible as well... D:

I agree with shiori up there, Intrax is a really good one. I'm planning on taking the summer program from Intrax and also entering the scholorship they give out (winner gets $3000!!!). The only thing I'm worrying about is that you must need 6 months learning japanese to be in the yearly and semester programs (which i want to do in the future). I dont know how to study for six months right now T_T. Do i get a private teacher?!?!? or what?!?!?  |

well im aiming to go to university after my college years. the programme i want to do i teaching english as a foreign language with japanese so i get to do that as a sandwich year at the uni im applying for. that way i get to spend a year in japan teaching. but ive gotta wait till uni fer that =/  |

Well, I'm going to a school called Osaka Senior Girl's School. It's an all-girl's school that I plan to attend my sophmore year. You need to have at least passed Japanese 2, and I'm going to Japanese 3 soon. Unlike most abroad programs, the actual program is within the school. You still live with a family, though.
