This happend a while ago but I just remembered after viewing the last post that someone did catch a live giant squid. It was japanese fisherman who luckily had some dive equipment and an underwater camera. The squid was a juvenille and thus was only as big as a bus. This url http://www.cdnn.info/news/eco/e050928.html will let you know more about the awesome discovery. |

These giant squid stories are ellusive and cool; I see you also have a fascination with anchient sea life and "lost" creatures! I believe you can go to a mueseum in Washington D.C. where you can see a giant squid carcass. Have you ever seen the pics of the Pleziosaur carcass the Japanese fisherman caught? Unfortunatly they threw over one of the greatest scientific discoveries of all time back in the ocean...but later made it into a stamp. I saw them once, they are indeed legitimate, and if anyone has these pics, post the link or pics here and I will be very, very greatful! The coolest thing I ever saw on the Discovery Channel: There is very rare but legitimate footage of a sea creature that has NEVER been caught in captivity and only found by humans dead; but once a couple found it on the beach as it came out ot shore to die. It looks like a small Chinese Dragon but I believe it was a type of Eel. Again, if anyone has a link to this footage give it to us! I have a link to a site that has recordings of unexplained animals, I'll provide it later if I can find it! BTW Does anyone think that the proved existence of such creatures (anchient sea life) can disprove the theory that the Earth is billions of years old? Some people do, I'm sort of in between. I'd like to hear a debate on that though. |

Shishio I think I know what you're talking about. Its called a ribbon fish or a unicorn fish. When fully grown the have a red dorsal fin that runs the length of thier bodyies and their bodies are silver in color. They live very deep in the ocean, I think the benthic zone so are they are rarley seen by humans like the coelacanth which is a prehistoric fish thought to be living evidence of the connection between fish and amphibians. I've also seen the giant caracss japanese fisherman found, and im thinking that it was just a whale carcass or at least thats what it looked like to me. There's a lot of mystery left in the ocean and thats why I love it so much........Feo |

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they found dinosaurs because the ocean is so big. There are a ga-jillion for lost sea monsters to hide that humans couldn't reach. Like back in 1937 (I think) they found that fish off the coast of Africa that was supposed to have been extinct for 600,000 thousand years. But I think our money would be better spent on space exploration...

Thats the coelacanth which was caught in africa back in the 30's. It was over six feet long and weighed almost four hundred pounds. Another was cauht in the eighties and a botched rescue attempt resulted in the fishes death. However one photographer did swim with it as it swam for about half an hour before dying. I think it was because of the pressure differences as they usually live at the bottom of the ocean. Thats where all the cool stuff is :) |

The smallest size a giant squid can be is about 2 meters (7 ft.) in length.

@lady maia Yep, that's right! And recent estimates put the maximum size at 10 meters (34 ft.) for males and 13 meters (44 ft.) for females from their fins to the tip of their two long tentacles. AND LOOKIE! I've found a pic of a giant squid...in ice! Hahahah!! ![]()

I hear that Giant Squids prey on whales...Or so i've heard.Well,it is the only thing almost as big as it is.Or maybe a shark? But they bite...And that squid that guy was holding in the picture isn't supposed to be considered a "Giant".That thing really isn't that big...Looks like just a overgrown one. Those who are caught in the whirlpool of Fate must step forward to overcome the tasks that lie before them... |

As I said before this is not apicture of a giant squid, its a picture of a humboldt squid which grow up to eight feet in lengt. Giant squid do not prey on whales, its vice versa. Sperm whales eat giant squid however sometimes the squid will drown the whale by holding it under water. |

@feo No, that's not the point. What we're saying is that the picture's been edited (composite is the posh word). Look closely, and you should see the squid doesn't blend with the guy who's holding it...

Dude thats not a composite, it's the real thing. Unless you've seen one them up close I dont know if you're qualified to judge the squids authenticity. To prove it ill post a pic with me in it and trust me it will be the real thing. |

@feo Okay, fine, fine! Since I don't want to get into a pointless argument, I'll agree. But the pic stiil looks like a composite to me...
