anyone else out there wish more 2D rpgs were produced for modern (non-handheld) consoles? not that i dont love 3D rpgs as well, but sometimes i miss the old days of Lunar and Chrono Trigger.. yeah the graphics arent as flashy but they certainly had their charm and the story lines were awesome. Anyway, like the thread title said... just a random rant about rpgs...

| I agree with your rant. All my favorite RPGs are 2D. Final Fantasy VI, Star Ocean 2, Lunar, Chrono Trigger, etc. etc. |

Yeah Id say I think the best are 2D. I liked the Seiken Densetsu Series and Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Golden Sun Series, yeah the works  |

adding on to what lucian the long winded and out of breath said about Lufia (sorry if you consider this an insult) IT, WAS, AWESOME!!!!...! this 2D RPG was beyond it's time, ranking as high as Mario RPG. if you have the time you MUST check this out. My only regret is that they wont' make a Lufia 3 (sob, sob, sob)
wealth, power, and fame. These things are yours to gain if you have the stomach to search for them.

for some reason I think I'm kinda addicted to RPGs. Whenever I go on a game search, I only happen to look out for RPGs. Yep. Love Golden Sun series. Been wondering if another sequel will be coming out for quite some time. Ah yes, and there's Final Fantasy, the ones during the good old 2D days. You know, those turned based battles... And Mario RPG is super cute. then there's Arcane on SNES and Lufia. Yar. I generally prefer turn based battles, cos it's much more easier on my simple mind. Yep. 2D RPGs rock the world. They've been there close to the beginning. so what if the graphics aren't flashy or anything, I love the storyline. Yay. And not to mention they're wonderful at killing time too.

| There was a sequel to Lufia the series I believe, but i think it was a completley different storyline. Many 3D RPGs suck compared to the 2D ones but they are still learning; 2D RPGs were around for a long time befoe they hit their prime in the mid-nineties. |

You guys aren't talking about 2D RPGs, you're talking about Classic RPGs, RPGs the way they USED to be, which was more raw, and down to earth. Nothing flashy, overly innovative, or artsy-farty. Those games were great because they were well written and beautifully designed. It had little do with the fact that they were in 2D. It might also be one of the reasons that FF7 was so damn popular. Lufia 2 (didn't like Lufia 1), Mario RPG, Final Fantasy VI, V, IV, Chrono Trigger, SD3 (never got very far, but it was good)... those are some of my favorite classic RPGs. Yeah, I don't mind playing 2Ds in PS2, especially Megaman, I like the sprites better if it's 2d, since the gameplay is familiar to the previous Megaman games.  |

| @ Daedalus: Yeah when 3D RPGs (and 3D games) came out there was a direct change in the style of most RPGs to compete with the dramatic new style of 3D RPGs and for the new 3D RPG fan base, both things particularly created by FF7. Remember how much it sold, and how many new fans it got? After that, the old RPG formula had to be changed for economic reasons more than anything, and also to use the new hardware, and part of that change involved the change from 2D to 3D. So it can be gauged that 2D RPGs were in an era all their own..So 2D RPGs are the classics. |
