The End of Evangelion-(Good or Bad?) *Spoilers*
Link | by Nekorin on 2006-09-08 19:10:11
I recently saw the movie, the end of Evangelion. I loved how it tied up the loose ends in the series, and it had great action, plot, and visuals. However, I hated the sad and still quizical ending, and liked the original episode 26 better. After all that Shinji still can't be happy?! Gawd! I mean, I've seen things with sad endings, and thought they were great and was satisfied by them. But with Evangelion Shinji was depressed throughout, and in the end he is doomed to be unhappy forever. It's just tooooo depressing. He doesn't even get to be happy in heaven or some such thing...

Yeah, I guess when The End of Evangelion was made, they focused more on rapping up the story, than the actual mood of the movie.

I suppose Shinji finally found comfort from Asuke in the end, whenever they were the last humans alive and she no longer suffered from forced narcicism caused by the pain of her childhood.

You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy. The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.

theres a lot of speculation about the end of evangelion, and heres mine. The end of the movie resulted in shinji creating a new world based on his own image. He wished that only he and asuka be left on the new red earth, I think its the same as adam and eve (again speculation). The reason asukas eyes are brown instead of blue I think is because all three of the godesses in shinjis life (asuka, rei, and misato) are combined into a single entity. I think this eve took the form of asuka because she in the end was the one that shinji cared for the most and ultimatley chose of the other two. When asuka says how pathetic I cant really say why she said it, mabye she was fed up with shinji, or ambye she had morning sickness (Hideki anno said that, not me!) Again this is all speculation and that why I love NGE it allows you to form your own conclusions and causes you to think unlike other anime.

How pathetic? What I heard her say was "How disgusting." Meaning she was upset at Shinji for selfishly sentencing the rest of the world to losing their individuality. If I'm right, it's unlikely that any propagating would happen.
:(

Which is sad because I felt for Shinji and I really wanted him to find happiness. That's why out of the whole series my favorite part was the 'harem anime' segment in ep. 26. For that reason, I really want to play 'The Shinji Ikari Raising Project.' Because I could help him. Unfortunately that's only in Japan. :( I downloaded an emulation of Evangelion 64, but it keeps messing up. I thought about buying it for real, but then there's region capabilities. Curse things not getting brought here!!!!

Anyway, I think religious refrences are cool, but the thing I really loved about Evangelion was the characters. I'm young and I'm not good at delving into symbolism, so I like things that fully explain themselves. Normally, I wouldn't like Evangelion because it's too complex. But I know what it's like to be lonely. I know what it's like to feel hated. I know what it's like to be narcissistic. For this reason, Evangelion has become one of my favorite anime. Because I have felt these things, to see these characters, these people, go through so much pain and still be unhappy, it's just too depressing. :(

I really enjoyed watching the movie...I watched it a long long time ago...about 4 years ago, and i thought it was awesome...however...i agree with you Nekorin! Really depressed!
At the end, i guess Asuka and Shinji are just like the Adam and Eve, like someone said before. For the part where Asuka says 'How disgusting" is so hard to understand...it could have different meanings i guess...i think she was just a little upset at the fact Shinji was crying pathetically on top of her, just winning about how miserable he is...Or...she was just in a bad morning mood...hehehe...But i still really enjoyed the movie afterall. It definitely tied up little details from the last episode (26)

Man I want to play shinji ikari raising project too, and yes there is a lot of symbolism in evangelion. Its actually follows the heroes journey pretty colsely, im taking AP english so I watched the series again with a new perespective. Yes the charecters are trully what makes evangelion special, I share many traits with shinji and mabye thats why I like him but deeply resent him at certain moments. Its becuase he reminds me so much of the aspects of myself that I hate. No other anime has done this and thats why eva is so cool. For something similar to eva watch this ugly yet beautiful world.

P.S

Could you tell me where you downloaded the eva games, please Nekorin i'll be your best friend and if you like rei ayanami or asuka then check out the shrines shishio and I built for them :}

I downloaded it from doh games, but there are no subtitles, and it doesn't work quite right. I'm not sure if this is the fault of the ROM or my computer, though.

OMG! I'm taking AP English too! My goal this semester is to be able to read and understand The Call of Cthulhu.

When I see Shinji in pain, I feel pain as well. I really loved the last episode, even though lots of question were unanswered, I saw him face hardship and learn more about himself, and eventually learn that people can change, and become happy. (Although the series quite tragically failed to explain exactly WHY Shinji was suddenly a God...) When I watched End of Evangelion, I was hoping it would have a similar ending. But it didn't. Not once throughout the movie did Shinji even smile, although it was uplifting to see Asuka happy (for a brief moment) and really cool to see her go on that spree. It was sad when it ended. I borrowed the movie from a friend. He tells me the movie's theme is: "What's the point of living?" I didn't quite get that from the movie, but that was how my friend interpretated it, and apparently others did as well. (According to him, people killed themselves after seeing it, but I have no more reliable sources for this.)

I do like Asuka alot, but have no images in order to contribute to a fanclub. Where did that christmas drawing come from anyway? I'm in the Rei fanclub, but it's for a different Rei, Rei Hino, Sailor Mars, because the fanclub is also for different Reis too, right? (Shishio is gone! It's lonely without him!)

Sorry if some of that was off-topic. What is the significance of that recurring classical song? I know it as the ringtone for if my mom, dad, or family calls me, because I put it there because of it's (homey) feel. Why did the makers of Evangelion chose it though? And for gawd's sake, Shinji and Asuka better become Adam and Eve, he's got to make it up to the rest of the world for screwing it up so bad. If I were there I would have smacked him, and said "EVERYTHING'S BROKEN! FIX IT NOW!" and shoved him toward Asuka.

lol, thats teching him how to be an effective adam. Also watch the commentary on the dvd version it propses a lot of interesting ideas and little tidbits of info that you might have missed. Good luck on the AP test Nekorin, lest get a 5 and show everyone up! The ending song Thantos fit the mood I guess, if you listen to the lyrics it pretty much embodies the entire movie. Later..........

P.S: Adam is the angel of the red earth, hence the red earth shinji created, more evidence that he has become adam the most awesome of all the angels. The only one I like more than adam is Zeruel, he kicked bothe asuka and rei buts and ripped shinjis arm off.

OK something I noticed amongst the responces was how the movie tied up Episodes 25 and 26. Let me clarify, NO THAT IS NOT THE CASE! End of Evangelion was intended to be the true Episodes 25 and 26, because if you noticed, in the series, 25 and 26 were constantly talking about instrumentality and how Shinji was experiencing it and such. However you don't even know how it occured, just that they were all undergoing various reflections with themselves.

However in EoE (End of Evangelion) that was what Instrumentality was supposed to happen. That was what Gendo and SEELE had intended, although both had different goals through the process of rebirth, but ultimately the choice feel upon Shinji, who had just killed Kaoru only days, possibly hours prior to the JSSDF attack.

Anyways, in terms of my opinion of EoE itself, I liked it, and I didn't like it. The battles were nice, the way they expressed Shinji's state of mind was really well done, showing how pathetic his mind really was, and I enjoy the whole 3rd Impact sequence, from Rei and Lillith merging, to the Tree of Sepheroth, to Lillith spilling her blood out, to Unit 01 floating into eternity with the Lange of Longinus.

What I didn't like was the fact we only saw Shinji's state of mind, and the movie ending off in such an abrubt manner, with Shinji just letting go of Asuka and her saying, "How disgusting (English)"/"I feel sick (Japanese)". It leaves a lot to be desired and people wonder, "What the heck happened?" and other such questions. The only real benefit that it left was that it opened up a huge door to fanfictions, allowing fans to write up stories based on what they think could have happened on that beach and after.

Although I said that we only got to see Shinji's state of mind, I disliked the fact that they only showed Asuka finding any resolution to her life; to have finally find peace. That's just sad in terms that only she found peace within her soul, even if it was short lived. Shinji, even Misato, Rei, Hyuga, those people found nothing but pain and suffereing. Well maybe not Rei, she tried to help Shinji since her resolution if you want to call that, was returning back to Lillith and helping Shinji. But if you think about it, who actually found something they could hold on to? Hmm? Think about it.

Anyways, those were my opinions of EoE, I have more, but I just can't remember any of them at the moment. Please feel free to rebutal my opinions. I'd enjoy a good discussion.

Well anyways, that's all from me

Cheers ^^ Ja ne

The point of the end of evangelion is that in the end all humans return to a collective state of being. Seemingly becoming a single entity as was the purpose of lilith. She returned all people to there molecular core, they where turned into primordial soup. And yes they all found closure in that sense. Did you see how lilith transformed into the people they loved that was their inner peace. EOE was not intended to become the actual ending the actual ending is the one in the show, it was created as an alternative to those who where angry about the original ending. Personally I liked the original a lot more, it had amuch more posotive messege "Take care of yourself" and thats the most important thing in my opinion.

I listened too the commentary last night, and it was very interesting. It pointed out something very interesting. The movie was "like a deal with the devil." Every complaint anyone had was answered. We are allowed to connect with Asuka, the questions from the series are explained, Gendo gets his comeuppance (No offense to the benevolent Gendou, proprieter of this fine site. :D) The action missing from the series is supplemented, all this..... And no one can possibly be happy with the ending! That takes some real skill. It's very much like the writer wanted to spite the fans.

Although, I'm different. The thing I really wanted was for Shinji, who so many people hated, to be happy. If I were there, I might have been rough with him at times, but never cold. Shinji needs someone to boss him around doesn't he? I was really upset, that the only time he smiles in the movie is when he met up with that depsicable Kaworu! How can he blame himself for destroying that manipulative creep?!

Also, how did anyone react to Misato's little sequence: "we'll do the rest when you get back." And she said that knowing full well she would die...

For those who like to read scanlated manga, I would STRONGLY recommend you check out an awesome doujinshi (fanfic) of NGE entitled RE-TAKE, which recounts several "what ifs" and "what could've beens" in the original story... this isn't like the "Girlfriend of Steel" series, but rather an extension of the End of Evangelion story arc...

The doujin is split in 5 parts. Check out Kurogane's blog for more info and download links:

p.s. Note that, like most doujins, this series also contains sexual situations - although the story itself will greatly overshadow it :)

What kind of file is it? I can't download torrents.

EDIT: Looks like a torrent. I have a dial-up connection (The worst fate for an anime fan! XO ) and torrent doesn't work for me. :( I really want to read it.

I have seen it and it was okay, I guess. There was a whole lot of screaming. Basically it was an alternative end to the series. Because the series ended on a positive note but the movie ended as the end of the world sort of deal. That is what I thought of it.

Thanks alot! :D I'll look at them later. The creator of Evangelion I think wants to mess with us, after those Death threats.

The two final episodes of the NGE series would be best viewed after the "End of Evangelion" movie... if you could remember the series took a huge (and different) leap to these two episodes. Watching the movie before then watch the 2 last episodes will thus provide a better (clearer) ending to this great series
