my definition of anime is any cartoon animated by a japanese company, marketed primarily to a japanese population. therefore, if an american company contracts japanese animators to create a cartoon, it is NOT ANIME. similarly, if a japanese company makes a tv show with american audience in mind, it is NOT ANIME. simply having a japanese look and feel means nothing. |

It really depends on your definition of the term anime. Traditionally anime would refer to japanese animation, characterized by the features of unusually large eyes and other stereotypes that differ from mainstream cartoons available in the US and other countries. But essentially, anime itself can be sub-divided into different genres, catering to different target audiences. The list you have put up caters more to a young audience, and therefore it falls under the category of school grade anime. But strictly speaking, some of them are not. Whilst teen titans employs a japanese animator, and the artistic direction does indicate a certain degree of manga or anime influence, it does not necessarily mean that the series can be categorized under "anime". At the end of the day, regardless of artistic direction, I believe what is most imperative is whether the particular series has adequately met the needs of the intended audience. In other words, don't dwell too much on whether it is or is not anime. Does that sort of answer your query? |

Me personally would say they are not traditional animes imported from japan but they do have anime style animation and gestures. These are american animes so if you want to say they are animes go ahead but to me they are mini animes and arent the real thing. |

Re: Is it Anime?

Anime:NOUN: A style of animation developed in Japan, characterized by stylized colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sex. ETYMOLOGY: Japanese, short for animshon, animation, from English animation In Japan, however, not all anime is targeted to younger audiences. Subjects in anime range from the obscene to the insanely cute. A good deal of Anime is an animated version of manga by a similar name and probably the same person. Manga (pronounced mahn-gah) refers to the Japanese equivalent of comic books. The word manga was coined by the artist Hokusai in 1815, usually translated as "irresponsible pictures." Anime and manga are significantly different from their counterparts in America. For the most part, cartoons and comic books in America are thought of as being geared toward younger audiences. Cartoons and comics books in Japan are intended for all all ages (Of course, some particular pieces are geared towards certain age groups ^_^). While there are American animations and comics which are intended for older, more mature readers without the need for superheroes, they are seen as something separate from the conventional line of comic books (i.e., DC Comic's Vertigo label is a separate entity from its normal titles). Millions of subway riders in America pass their time reading newspapers or novels on the train. In Japan, you're just as likely to see someone reading a comic book. As long as it was produced by Japanese Animator, or it was made by japanese company and giving profit to japan... Its anime...

I would say that Avatar should at least count a little. My definition of is anything that is animated in the familiar style (i know there are many styles, but lets not get technical here) and is NOT created to sell toys. Thus, Avatar would count, although it is animated and originally voiced in English, and Dragon Ball Z would not. Yu-Gi-Oh! would DEFINITELY not be considered by these standards. Anyway. 2 cents = added.
We are not the images we see.

Traditionally anime would refer to japanese animation, characterized by the features of unusually large eyes and other stereotypes that differ from mainstream cartoons available in the US and other countries. So that means: Pokemon is a Anime(?) |
Re: Is it Anime?

yeah, yeah, traditionally anime, so what! Anime is a certain type of animation, usually japanese, certain characteristics of anime. Anime started in Japan which makes it a japanese thing, but if another country, such as america, makes a show with enough similarities to anime it becomes "american anime". it's just like when i lived in korea, i saw a show that was basically, korean power rangers(which was mad funny to see)! now, power rangers are american, so does that mean that even though the people on the show, looked somewhat like power rangers, dressed somewhat like power rangers, and had powers like power rangers, they aren't a different type of power rangers? I think not! Teen titans has many qualities of a japanese anime i mean (1) it was based of a comic book (2) there facial expressions and the sound effects (3) it has a theme song sung by a japanese group who also sing it in japanese, and i could list other reasons too. That's why it's an "american anime" Now totally spies and W.I.T.C.H., i can't see as anime, ever!!! And even though I haven't seen Avatar, just seeing previews and clips have led me to believe that it too, must have some qualities of anime, i mean just look at the art. it is so anime, it's kinda freaky. either way, i think whoeva started dis thread shuld decide for themselves wut they think, cuz obviously this subject is very much debated.

To understand what is and isn't anime, consider the origin of the word itself. "Anime" is simply the Japanese word for animation. No more, no less, at least in Japan. To a Japanese person, if it is animated, it is anime, regardless of its style or country of origin. Yes, in Japan, Disney (!) is anime. In other countries, anime has come to mean animation produced in Japan for the Japanese market. Of course, like nearly every other word adopted into the English language, it begins with one meaning (its denotation), and gains other meanings as its usage is adapted into context (its connotations). Japan has exported its home-grown animation all over the world, so the global animation market has a lot of people working in it who grew up watching the stuff and have incorporated the characteristics of Japanese animation into their own work. Some American animators who acknowledge their debt to anime are Genddy Tartikovsky (Samurai Jack), Craig McCracken (Powerpuff Girls), and Paul Dini and Bruce Timm (pretty much the entire DC animated universe). When I see shows like Totally Spies, Avatar, and Teen Titans, which have the characteristics of anime but are not Japanese in origin, I think of them as a kind of "faux-anime". That's not a slam on those shows; I like all of them. It's just my own way of describing them.

I like Teen Titans, although i don't know if it can be considered an anime or not. But the one that sang the theme song is japanese, let alone having a japanese theme song. =3 |
Re: Is it Anime?

anime for is animation. that's that. However, for an animation to have the anime "feel" it must have been made by a japanese or anyone from asia (like korea). Just an opinion. else, i don't feel it's real. I think W.I.T.C.H. is an anime because the mangaka was a japanese. Disney licensed it and it became theirs. the mangaka is IIDA Hikaru btw
huwhaaaaat?!

Re: Is it Anime?

like they've said, anime is just abbreviated for animation. and animation is any still pictures that, when run consecutively, appears to move. and besides, anime = cartoon. just like that. why the heck do you have to separate anime from cartoons anyway? they're both animation(animated, that is) and the only difference they have are their styles in making it.(actually, they just adopt from one another[like japanese mangaka adopting disney's "big-eyes" because of their insecurity on small, slanty eyes.]) so there. by the way, from what i know, W.I.T.C.H. is made by a groups of italian artists.(it says so in the editor's note[in our publishing]) |

let's just all agree that the ones the post starter listed are NOT anime, because they're not. Besides, if you look at the staff role in the end, they're all korean animators from american companies, I don't know what part of that makes it a Japanese anime. I'll eat you. |
