I finally got the series when I was in the Philippines this summer. Prior to going, I knew it was licenced but could never find it, but after I got the import DVDs, local stores like Fry's Electronics and Best Buy finally started getting them so now I'm a little pissed. But I got the whole series anyway so I can't complain that much. Tomino made this anime between Gundam and Z Gundam. It aired from spring of 1983 to the January of 1984. It is based off Tomino's novel "Wings of Lin" about a world called Byston Well where some dead people go. The designs were also done by the same people who did Macross. So minds behind Gundam+Macross=good series, don't you think? It's somewhat like Escaflowne in a way but with very little romance. Byston Well is a world that exists between our world and the sea and is pretty much a midevil world. Humans of earth contain a special power called Aura, but some can have more potential than others. It's somewhat like the Newtype concept in Gundam, but just a little different. Shou Zama, the main character, is a motocross driver who is chosen to fight for a King of Byston Well, Drake Luft. However, when Shou meets the crew of the Zaraana, he becomes aware of Drake's ambitions are not for the good of the world and starts to rebel. The story moves a little slow at first but it's a very great series. Many of my friends who live in Japan tend to say that Dunbine was a lot better than First Gundam. I say each series set a new standard in their own way and equally good. But I think it was Gundam that showed that it has the potential to expand. But in 1996, in OVA spin off of Dunbine was made called Garey's Wing. I heard it was really horrible.
