anime and j-pop on vinyl?
|
since a lot of pop albums have limited vinyl editions i was wondering if they did the same thing for anime soundtracks and j-pop. it would make sense, but i've never seen any j-pop or anime music on vinyl anywhere. do they issue music in japan on vinyl? if they do, does any of it make it here or are we stuck with nothing but ceedees? i'd hate to have to go all the way to akihabara just to get an anime music on vinyl fix. |

There are some vinyl records for anime/jpop... but they are limited, and most are already out of print (not all, just a rather decent number of them). Frankly, I say get with the new age and buy a cd player! I've heard vinyls and cds sound far better; and mp3s/oggs after that. But if you really want your favorite anime/jpop music on vinyl I'd try e-bay, as I doubt you'll have much luck otherwise.

When I was in Houston, I found some Mobile Suit Gundam soundtrack on vinyl (since it's from the late 70s). I think some of Utada Hikaru's music can be purchased on vinyl, but they're extremely hard to find. If you go into really small Asian music stores, you can find them. I even found some Ranma 1/2 on LaserDisc once. It's cool that you want to find vinyl stuff. I have tons of vinyl records at my house. |

one of the problems i have with ceedee is that the format is on its way out - overtaken by mp3 and other downloaded formats. i don't know what digital formats we'll be using to listen to music 10 years from now, but they'll still be making vinyl lps. |

wow, at least 4 of us actually know what vinyl is. LOL Sorry, I haven't seen any on vinyl. I hardly even ever SEE vinyl. I doubt akihabara would have vinyl, it'd be too old-fashioned for that part of town... you'd probably have to go to some old school record store... lol I doubt that mp3 and other internet friendly file formats will stick around very long. (In spite of sites like gendou.com.) They're trendy now, and cheap, but you lose a heck of a lot of sound quality in order to get smaller file sizes. If there's a song I really want I look for a way to buy it, at least as a CD. Sometimes that trade off of cheap vs quality just isn't worth it. |

I think there will always be a place for small digital music files, not just because they're cheap, but because they're free. As long as there is an America, there will be a place for free (in the capitalist sense of course :P) Anyways, I completely forgot anime and records existed at the same time. It's like I somehow missed the fact an anime video and a record could exist in the same universe. Just something that never clicked in my head...

i think it's entirely possible that ceedee will be replaced for the bulk of music sales. if you look at the history of recorded music, it has always been about increasing convenience and reducing cost - sound quality was almost always secondary. it wasn't ceedee that displaced the vinyl record, it was the cheap compact cassette. sound quality was not an issue. convenience and low cost were. audiophile vinyl is still being made (in thick 180 and 200 gram pressings) and among audiophiles, ceedee has been replaced by SACD and DVD-A. so the ceedee's days are numbered. oddly enough, i never got into collecting ceedees - i never really liked digital sound, even on vinyl. i would like to get anime and j-pop in a better sounding format than mp3 (or ogg vorbis or aac) but don't want to start investing in what i think will be an orphaned format. so it's either vinyl (which i have an investment in) or SACD (which, as i understand it, sounds better than dvd-a). incidentally, sacd and dvd-a are also being abandoned by their developers due to slow sales and are only being supported by audiophiles at this point. since vinyl has built a reputation as a 'collector' format (virtually all major releases get special limited edition vinyl releases) and vinyl is popular with deejays, i figure that anime soundtracks and j-pop are more likely to come out on vinyl than on SACD. |

well there are a few formats that I've heard are good, that do indeed sound far better then mp3's. oggs for one, wav, mp2, mpc, and those are about all I can think of... I believe I used to have mp4s, but they didn't sound much like the original song from the cd. The cd will more then likely become smaller... or the internet will start being monitored and taxed for everything you download and see, that you haven't payed for. Frankly I hope it never comes to that, though I put little past the greedy Americans. >>; Frankly I don't think you should be charged to see pictures or download stuff someone is willing to host at their convenience for free download. If it's already being paided for (sites like this that ask for donations to keep open, or simply the cost of the webhosting itself) should be sufficent enough money. There are already sites that do charge small amounts for your favorite (easy to find and popular) music downloads (anime seems to never get included).
