Samurai X (or rather Rurouni Kenshin), for me, is the best, because:
1) I only know that series
2) I particularly like the historical resemblances the mangaka/creator had wanted to do with his series (<---loves History)
3) I like the music :3
4) Kenshin is cool :3 and funny and dangerous at the same time.

I think Samurai X is the best out of those choices, but Samurai Champloo is up 2nd since it was a good anime. I liked Samurai X the best though because it had a really good plot, beautiful characters (c'mon! Sanosuke, Kenshin, and Kaoru are all amazingly drawn!) It is also a very likeable anime, and it has a lot of things I like. Ancient Japan, Samurai (duh), attractive female character who doesn't necessarily NEED a man to protect her from every little thing, hott (in my opinion) main character, Sword battles, romance, and plenty of the good ol' humor!
I have really weird ideas on what makes a Samurai, or any Anime for that matter, a good Anime. Of course, you need the basics :Good plot, good character structure & development, and a steady storyline. Well drawn characters and what not aren't a need, more of a plus...but if they are good then there's a better chance of more people liking the anime. Now portaining to Samurai Anime, there have to be good sword battles and conflicts surrounding the main character(s) if you ask me. And being the hopeless romantic that I am, there has to be some sort of romance between the main character and another equally attractive character to keep me going. But I like the two to have to fight throughout the Anime to keep their relationship strong. And though it's cliche, having the main character have demons from their past haunting them is enjoyable to watch. But also, I find this crucial: You have to have acceptable voice actors. You can't give a twenty year old woman a voice actor that makes her sound like some peppy five year old hyped up on candy. And giving guys VAs with too low a voice or too boring is kind of a let down.
Also, there have to be things that happen that make the anime a little realistic, like having a lovable character die a painful death at the hands of our main character's arch enemy or something. Yea, cliche, but who ever said that was a bad thing?
And I also think that catchy music should be included. Not stuff like one of Trigun's endingd where it's just a whiny singer that only succeeds in making you angry. And not music like how in the older anime it's only music or some 80s japanese band singing, and I preferably don't like jazz or blues. I like songs like Unlimited from Samurai 7, and True Light from DNAngels, good quality songs that get stuck in your head pleasantly and make you appreciate the anime even more.
Whoa, I went overboard...and in only like...a minute and a half! I really need to get out more...

but none of the 3 choices are actually about samurai....
Just because the people running around using katana and having sword fights doesn't mean they are samurai.
Kenshin is both not a noble, and he was an assassin.
Mugen and Jin aren't samurai either. Jin was kicked out and disgraced and Mugen is a criminal.
Basilisk is mostly about ninja who aren't samurai.

action anime yes, samurai anime, no.

I guess it just depends on your preference...I personally love all three of those animes and I am happy that you included all of them.

Basilisk (Drama...basically.)
Samurai Champloo (Pure style with comedy added.)
Samurai X (Kind of a combination between the two.

You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy. The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.
