Asuka from Evangelion! Her parents were both screwballs, her dad... I don't remember much about her dad, but her mom was always distant... Then after a while she went crazy and started referring to a doll as Asuka, and called Asuka "That girl." Afterwards, when Asuka was going to be an Evangelion pilot, she ran to tell her mother... But her mother had hanged both the doll and herself, thus killing herself without noticing Asuka. Even during the series, she pilots Evangelion entirely to prove she's not worthless, and almost always fails everything she tries because of her mental instability. Quite the happy childhood, ne? |

I forgot what her name was...but it was that little girl from Grave of the Fireflies Why: she was a war child...just that fact makes it sad enough. to make it worse, her parents had died, and she only had her brother left to be with. but, they had no money, no home, nothing!!!! her brother tries so hard to work for their living. their aunt brought them into her home, but she was cruel and used their mother's clothes to trade for food...and only have like, 1/10 of it to them!! It was so selfish!!! In the end the little girl dies from hunger...she started eating rocks...it was so sad >_< Her brother cremented her, and buried her ashes. in ther end her dies too.... *starts crying* |

Shanin (Glass Heart) from Angel Heart. Raised to be an assassin with the threat of death constantly looming over her head with survival the only thing they are allowed to think about. Most of the other kids she grew up with are dead for not making the grade and the one that is closest to her growing up, the final test involved the two of them in death duel where only one of them is allowed to live if not, they both die. At 14, she tosses herself from a building because she can't stand her life anymore. |

Soujiro (Rurouni Kenshin) When he was a child, he was mistreated by his half-brothers and sisters. He did all the carrying of the heavy sacks of rice and he was let to sleep out in the cold without any blanket. |

Saddest childhood for me would have to be (in no real order)... Ichise (Texhnolyze)- Born in the hellish underground city of Lukuss on the wrong side of the tracks. Father was framed and murdered in front of him and mother died a slow painful disease (once again, in front of him). His only source of hope in his life were the renmants of his mother which he kept in a keepsake preserver (finds out later that she died). Destitute, his only option for survival was brutal cage fighting which ended tragically for Ichise (his right arm and left leg were chopped off due to him actually responding to the abuse). Sounds pretty screwed up to me. Gaara (Naruto)- Pretty much just generally hated and feared by everybody that he new (even though he desperately tried to make friends, they scourned and emotionally abused him) due to a factor that he had no say in. His own father repeatedly tried to kill with countless waves of ninjas which Gaara, even against his own will, kills. His uncle, whom he thought loved him and was his only inspiration for happiness, tried to kill him also and when Gaara defended himself (killing the unclue), he revealed that he never really cared for Gaara and hated him for once again, a reason that Gaara had no say in. Mugen (Samurai Champloo)- Born in probably the worst area of Japan imaginable, a prison/port where survival was key and suffering was rampant. Mugen had no parents and spent most of his life either with terrible loneliness or with people that were extremely evil. He pretty much spent his entire life in poverty, with the utmost prejudice against him, with absolutely no say in the matter. Lucy (Elfen Lied)- A lot of the show focuses on this. Lucy was born with horns (diclonius, in fact probably the only true diclonius left), so her parents abandoned her. She was taken in by foster care, in which nobody really cared for her and ostracized her for her horns. She was constantly forced to be alone and although she tried to make friends she is spurned, lied to, physically assaulted, and forced to witness brutality to the only source of hope that she has (her puppy is killed in front of her). When she does react, said reaction is so overwhelming (vectors) that she is ostracised even further and forced to live a meager life filled with loneliness and despair. Her fear of her tormentors (the human race) causes her to make even more mistakes when she does finally find hope and thus she is left with guilt and regret to add to her suffering. This basically summarizes Lucy's life in a nutshell.
You need a reason to be sad. You don't need a reason to be happy. The secret to happiness is to face the fact that the world is horrible.

Elric Brothers (FMA) Well, they tried their best to revive their mother, but then they found out that they end up making their mother imperfectly, and thus the recreated mother died again. They have this guilty feeling of killing their mother all along, and not to mention losing some parts of their own body (everything but his soul, in Al's case...) Nico Robin (One Piece) Everyone of luffy's crew has a sad past, but to me she's the worst... She's rejected by everyone in her hometown thanks to her devil fruit ability, except by some librarians. Her mother left her alone since she's doing some dangerous trip. When she's 8, she has to witness the people who accept her as a person being slaughtered by the government. At that time too, she finally meets her long awaited mother, only to part with her again, and she knows that her mother will be killed by the government. Now she's all alone in the world and she has this 79 million bounty on her head, so she has to run from the world. For 20 years she suffered rerjection, betrayal, and loneliness before she finally meets luffy and crew. |

The sadest by far is the childhood of the brothers from Grave of the Fireflies. There parents both died due the events for WWII. There aunt couldnt stand them and let them live in the streets where the eventualy starved to death. They realy didnt have a childhood and neither of them lived into adulthood. It doesnt get any sadder then that. To this day It's the saddest movie ever made anime or live action I've ever seen. |

Momiji from Fruits Basket cos when he was born his mother rejected him and hated him for being a member of the zodiac and then she got ill and had her memory wiped so she could forget him. I think there is a line in it that is something like the biggest regret she had was that 'that thing' ever came out of her body. aww |

Sotoko from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni? I mean, she freaking got tortured to death, and that was after her brother abandoned her (Is it still a childhood when she died as a child? o.o) |

I think it would be the boy from the Grave of the Fireflies because his whole family died. I do not know why but there is two ending for this movie. Some had told me that the ending they had was the boy survived. However, for me, I watched the ending that actually shows the boy died in a MRT station and he has been calling for his sister. He was left alone in the MRT station without anyone saving though there were many people there. |
