anybody ever felt belittled by Japanese Pride??
|
i was on a forum, and there was this japanese person speaking, and i myself came in like i always do casual and joking around, and then the person just changed his/her tone. They got all defensive, skipped over friendly questions and attacked the ones that seemed ignorant. then it turned into, "i am surprised that blah blah blah i know this word and you don't" etc. I also had a japanese friend, who did study abroad here for a year. I found out from another person(another friend) that there was a chinese student in my japanese freinds class that he wouldnt talk to. The scene described was he gave him an ugly look and never gave him the chance. that suckekd to find out. anywho, whats your opinion.
If you are japanese you must speak to me for I am always trying to learn new things!

I guess they can't seem to admit that they have fallen in power. Technologically and socially they're one of the most powerful in the World, but in terms of military strength they can't compare to countries like China and the U.S. . I don't see what the big deal is, I mean the U.S. isn't exactly foreign friendly and that has been the case since Washington's days (just read his speeches on foreign policy) as such we try to find our greatest strength and use that to demean other countries. Sad but somewhat true. -make of it what you will

military stuff is abritraty to me. and i know i spelled that wrong. i just care how im treated as a person. I think japan getting rid of their military is a good thing, seems to work for them. they dont get attacked and they can spend alot more on other things.

thats what i meant. Japan is much better off. They just can't stand us Americans and our military pride. So they try and find other things to poke at us about. lol *goes back to Bush-impeachment plan 105

Hmm... recently went on a history field trip on WWII. I guess the reason Japanese are like that might be due to the concept they have, Samurai Code. If I recall what they tour guide repeated tons of times correctly, it meant something along the lines of fighting till the end, and all those stuff regarding honour blah blah. I don't know if this thing still exists, but it still seems that way to me. And I'm terribly sorry if I happened to offend anyone. I don't have anything against Japanese. If I had, I wouldn't be here. Yar. So please don't take offence. -hides in a corner- |

hmm...well, as far as animosity is concerned, the people who would have the most amount of anger towards the japanese would prolly be hands down the Koreans, second to China, and in a close third, the Phillipines. Really the random crap that happened to Koreans as well as Koreans who lived in post-war Japan was not the most grandeur of scenes. I realize this, because my parents are of Korean descent, and I still notice a hint of disdain for the Japanese in their voice when they talk about it. It's not as bad as it was decades ago, when both cultures literally could not stand each other and it became an issue of pride rekindling a centuries old bitterness between each other. As far as Japanese disdain for other cultures, I'm sure in the hearts of some Nihonjin, it still exists. But I'd like to think that the more we understand each others cultures, the more we can move to a future where such bitterness is a thing of the past. I'd like to think that my quest to learn more Japanese and to learn about it's enriched culture can help me understand this rather distasteful facet of this society. Oh and another note: I think it's funny that the countries that lost in World War II, are the economies that rebounded to become the most powerful economies of their respective continents. I'm of course talking about Japan, and Germany (perhaps Italy, but they didn't do anything in the first place, except their disasterous campaign of Africa). All thanks to not having an active military, YAY!!!

What's Nihonjin, KrnPakRat? I'm just curious, mate. |
Re: anybody ever felt belittled by Japanese Pride??

I think Nihonjin is another word for Japanese. I could be mistaken though. Anybody else want to clarify? Anyways, I think that the Japanese learn to be aloof and very polite from when they're very young; I think this is because of the fact that their modern culture is still greatly influeneced by tradition, and also history probably plays a big part in it. I have nothing against the Japanese; I find their culture and history extremely fascinating(if anyone knows of any spiffy Japanese history books or websites, post 'em) and would like to visit Japan someday. Also, most other countries, including Japan, have unfavorable stereotypes against Americans, and I can't say that we haven't necessairly done anything to disprove those stereotypes. Also, they might be reacting in accordance to culture shock. I feel bad, but it happens. I hope that one day that people worldwide will no longer look at each other in fear or look down on one another, and I think learning about each other's cultures and natures would help immenseley. Wow, that was long, but this is a subject I feel strongly about. If I've offended anyone at all, I would like to apologize.

In the end, it depends on what environment the person is used to. Me myself, I say KrnPakRat, that China has as much as disdain to Japanese as much as Korea. My grandfather, who is Chinese, has the same kind of disdain in his voice when it comes to talking about the Japanese. Ever since the Rape of Nanjing, some of my older relatives are still keeping that disdain. Some of my other relatives, also Chinese, have families in Japan. Although if its one story I can relate to GaiJin, is one about a Chinese friend of mine. When he was in college he met a Japanese girl, later they became boyfriend and girlfriend. It was until the girl's parents found out that their daughter's boyfriend was Chinese, that they did everything they could to separate the two. |

yeah, a lot of countries have to deal with the whole ethnocentric thing: case in point: italians, like all of my relatives. but seriously. you can also look at the japanese version in simple stats: i mean, how many foreigners {that is to say, non-asian people such as europeans or americans} live in japan compared to the masses? look at this, it's factual information: Ethnic groups: Japanese 99%, others 1% (Korean 511,262, Chinese 244,241, Brazilian 182,232, Filipino 89,851, other 237,914) http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ja.html ehhh??? that was from the c.i.a, what??? okay, we're gonna lay low for a while..... >.< {grabs money and runs to mexico}

Well, the fact that the JP government is telling its people that Japan werent at fault and that they were blamed unjustly for WWII kinda make them wanna resent those who accuses them of it. Though of coz not many realise that their gov is lying to them. But in this local sushi shop an acquaintance of mine works at, the manager who is JP would invite everyone who is JP working there to karaoke party but not my acquaintance or this Chinese guy at her work place. This manager doesnt look kindly on guai lo people, Chinese and koreans. But yeah, Chinese people have the same kind of thing on non-Chinese, and now a thing especially on the JP. Well, it's definitely understandable for the Chinese I guess. Afterall, before the Europeans came, the Chinese empire was the center of Asia. Chinese pplz kinda feel that our position was usurped by the white people. And of coz it doesnt take a genius to know why Chinese dont like the JP people. |

Anime seems to be completly open to the Chinese and Korean. You got animes like Ranma, Fushigi Yuugi, Card Captor Sakura, Condor Hero, etc giving the Chinese a good rep. And Hikaru no Go clearly stated that Chinese and Koreans were better at go than Japanese, and they are but they didnt hide that fact at all. Plus Chouji from Naruto loves Korean BBQ. Leave it to anime to bring the world together, and make it a better place. (currently nibbling a cha sui bao a.k.a. nikuman) Anyways I have Korean, Japanese, and a Chinese friend. They get along fine, and even joke about stuff that would seem rasist, but It just shows they are comfortable being around each other. The only problem is that the Koreans always say the Korean Donchii is superior to the Japanese Kanchou, and they actually have serious arguments about it. |

What is the Korean Donchii and Japanese Kanchou? There is still the debate on an island that was once Korea's until the Japanese occupied it and who it belongs to now. I'm sorry I don't know too much about the situation, but I know Korea is very patriotic about it. There is a picture of a woman who cut off her finger to protest against the Japanese about the island. |
Re: anybody ever felt belittled by Japanese Pride??

In Naruto, Kakashi calls it 1000 years of pain. Kanchou: The Japanese use it like Kakashi, Tora seal style. Donchii: Same concept, except Koreans use all fingers, like they are praying. Yes they do have serious arguments about which is better. |

Afterall, before the Europeans came, the Chinese empire was the center of Asia. Chinese pplz kinda feel that our position was usurped by the white people. Resentment for being usurped? No, China had always been closed. And then Europe basically destroyed it with the Opium War and Spheres of Influence and such. China wasn't usurped, it was downright brought down by the Europeans. And of coz it doesnt take a genius to know why Chinese dont like the JP people. They called it the Rape of Nanjing. Last I heard, it wasn't in the history books of Japanese schools. |

Not too many people know about the Rape of Nanjing. From what I hear, some Japanese still deny the fact that it ever happened. |

when people mean japanese pride. do they mean their cockyness. i mean many japanese brag that they have best technology and all and i'm kind of sick of it. i know i'm not the only one to feel this even though i love anime and all. |
Re: anybody ever felt belittled by Japanese Pride??

Ive seen Korean pride to the extreme. My friend brags how the leader of the Yakuza in Japan is Korean. Im thinking, is that something to be proud of? Any body know who Reverend Moon is? He's proud of him too. Thats the guy who came to america and started a succesful religous cult that stole people of all their assets. Plus created mass marraiges. I guess Lucian is right. "someone has to be proud of something." I find it weird to have pride in somethings. Like when cheering for a football game from your tv, people scream "WE WON!" when they didnt do any thing. Just living in the same state as the team that won makes you have pride? |
