ALI Project - "Ankoku Tengoku" Single

Wow, I am actually really impressed by ALI Project's latest single, and for one main reason: it doesn't sound like another clone of the first two Rozen Maiden openings. I love ALI Project's sound and have been a fan of theirs for a long time, but ever since "Seishoujo Ryouiki" (Rozen Maiden Traumend) and "Boukoku Kakusei Catharsis" (.hack//roots), all their singles seemed to sound exactly like one another. There was variation, sure, but the overall style was so similar that it was like a blaring siren screaming "We've lost our creativity, so we're just going to tweak our last successful thing again and hope it works!" The B-sides on those singles were even worse than clones - they just sounded uninspired, period. I'd say the only exception to the rule in there was probably "Baragoku Otome," the opening for Rozen Maiden Ouverture, and even that wasn't all that spectacular. The "Ankoku Tengoku" single, however, has raised my hopes that ALI Project is still capable of making songs that don't sound like that, and that are GOOD. The lead track, which is the opening for the new Kami-chama Karin anime, starts out like it's going to be another clone for the opening instrumental, but once the main chorus starts, it finds its own style. Still similar to what I've heard from the pair in the past, but this time with enough variation to warrant its own merit. It even starts getting downright funky (for ALI Project), which is so neat. :D It's easily their most unique song in a long time, I think. And even the B-side song on the single, "Momoiro Tengoku" is good, by the way! It's been far too long since I've heard a really good sweet song from ALI Project (think CLAMP Campus Detectives and Wish). <3 This sounds like a great "strolling in the park" song, and Arika's vocals have a really nice little skipping flow, especially in the chorus. I almost felt like she was singing a song for a musical. Anyway, yes, didn't know where else to post about this. I liked the other songs of Ali Project too! Momoiro Tengoku is nice, but I think Ankoku Tengoku is better. Really nice song. And I love Arika's voice! XD   |

I've been a fan of ALI PROJECT since I first listened to "Yuukyou Seishunka" in February on the Animenfo.com radio. I then hunted down as many songs by them to my liking. That was when I heard "Pastel Pure" from Maria-sama ga Miteru. it was so soothing and lulling. If you haven't listened to any of their non-anime, orchestral music, I suggest listening to "Narcisse Noir" and "Mitsubara Teien". Also, to tell you the truth, I haven't even seen half of the anime that ALI PROJECT wrote music for.  |
