ok, basically, i'm trying to find a magic anime

not magical girl

not harry potter, something thats actually cool.

y'know they actually cast spells that do random stuff, not just blow each other up like with most magic anime i know of. Anyone got any idea's?

and yes i know this is the most amazing description of what anyones looking for ever, but its the best i can do atm.

Memories are good but thats all they are, memories... Nothing more, nothing less

You might check out Magic User's Club (Mahou Tsukai Tai) It's not particularly serious but it's about a group of high school students that form a magic club where they actually use magic. It's kind of a magical girl show, but the focus is on the members of the club that use magic, both male and female.

Kiki's Delivery Service?

Kimagure Orange Road has some magic in it, though it is a drama show primarily. The main character and his family are all espers, makes it useful when he's torn between two girls and tries to date both...

Ruin Explorers is a 4 episode OVA that has some fighting in it but mainly is an adventure/comedy show (like Slayers but less fighting).

Maburaho is another interesting title, it takes place at a magic school but it's not really Harry Potter/Negima-like. Every person can use magic a certain number of times in their life, but once it's gone they die. The main character only has a very limited number of times to use magic, but he's very powerful due to the fact he's from a long line of great magicians. So the most powerful girls in the school all want him to father their child so that they will produce the most powerful magician ever. It's a romance-comedy school show, not too bad. No goofy transformation scenes that I recall, either.

Magikano is kind of similar in feel to Maburaho. So is Happiness

Psychic Academy is okay, but the manga is many times better. There is some fighting here as well, but that's not the only focus.

Hope that helps.

I agree with Larinon.
Personally, I nearly loved Maburaho. :3

Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsuna Koto (Someday's Dreamers/Yume Mahou). It's in my simple-and-light-yet-able-to-make-me-smile story classification.
