Ok, so everyone knows the saying "something is the greatest thing since sliced bread!" What do you think the greatest thing since sliced bread is? I can't really think of anything thats the greatest thing since sliced bread... I mean theres a lot of great things... But to compare it with sliced bread... I wonder... (Note: If this thread is a repeat thread I'm going to hurt my self with something pointy. [I'm the biggest noob when it comes to the "Search" feature here.]) |

Well I hate to be the facts guy but you guys are wrong. Though I do agree that anime is better than sliced bread, according to wikipedia: "The oldest known anime is in 1907, a short 3 second clip of a sailor boy." "Otto Frederick Rohwedder of Davenport, Iowa invented the first loaf-at-a-time bread-slicing machine. A prototype he built in 1917 was destroyed in a fire, and it was not until 1928 that Rohwedder had a fully working machine ready." Therefore anime can't be the best thing since sliced bread because it predates sliced bread. |

@raisin- The first real anime was around 1918 and Tezuka Osamu was the first one to produce manga and anime as we know it. Besides, I wouldn't call a 3 second clip the first anime any more than I would call a 20 page flip book of a walking stick figure the first cartoon. So no, anime doesn't predate sliced bread if the first bread slicing machine (even if it was a prototype) was created in 1917. It does predate sliced bread if you refer to the first mass production of sliced bread. I would say the Internet. I mean, it's just the best. |

@Jon Well i guess i comes down to your perspective of things. Though I agree with you that a 3 second short isnt really an anime. Its more of the idea that omeone would create animated drawings in the belief that someone would want to see that more than animated pictures and then acting on that belief leading us that 3 second shot. That's where I mark the birth of anime and animation in general. Again, its all about your outlook on things. *EDIT* Also (I forgot about the bread part in my reply). Yes, people have been slicing bread since before the machine. But the term "sliced bread" generally refers to pre-sliced bread you could buy in the supermarket on the account that American sandwich bread is next to impossible to slice when freshly baked. It's more of the convience of then the actual bread itself. Its pretty much the beginning of when we as Americans became so lazy. Of course theres those Italian and rustic breads, but the phrase doesnt mean anything to them (Can any1 confirm this?) You slice a loaf of bread and call it sliced bread I slice a loaf of bread and call it hideously disfigured bread stick. |

@NeZZuri: Of course gendou.com is awesome, I agree on that, but no internet, no gendou.com or a whole lot of other websites and goodies, so internet's the greatest for me (no offense meant to anyone who agrees with Nezz about what he/she said or to Gendou himself) |

Ze Chiis are the greatest things since sliced bread. Well... not things. Beautious people <3 Other than that, the greatest thing since sliced bread would have to be pants. Think of all of the things you can do with pants. You can wear them normally, roll up one leg, roll up both legs, rip them to look pretty.. or not wear them at all! So fantastic!! |
