Question about .rar and .zip files...

This is pretty simple to answer, and I wanted to find this out since I got kind of curious. We've all dLed .rar and .zip files before, right? Rather for music or anime even. After you extract them, you can either extract them to a new folder or to get all the files out at once. Pretty simple, right? Well, I wanted to know if you guys kept them after extracting them, or delete them after you get what they have inside of them? Since you have what you wanted to dL, would it be a good idea to toss out the .rar or .zip files? I also thought to my self, "it might save some space on your computer, too", right? So for example, when you dL an anime episode (use an easy example... Bleach since it'll be winrar), it's around 170 MBs right? Some might even be over 200 or less then 150 even. So technically, after you extract them from the .rar/.zip files, wouldn't you be dLing basically two episodes, but it's only one? Oh, the same thing can be for torrents, too. They're smaller and I'm not too concerned about them for now. So yeah, I waned to know what other people do after dLing these files. :3 This might be a foolish question, anyways... ^.^; ![]() ------- |

I toss the .zip/.rar files, unless they are program files. I save those on an external harddrive as a back up. anime and manga files get tossed. I'm not quite sure what you mean by dling 2 episodes. You have a zip file. You extract the video file from it and you have a zip file (which is unwatchable) AND the video file (which is watchable) and you have 2 files. But they are 2 seperate things. You are only downloading one file. You can re-use the zip file to get another video file if you want (heck you can re-use it any number of times to get multiple copies of the video), but why? You can also set your preferences in most uncompression software to auto-delete the compressed file (.zip or .rar or even .sit) after a successful uncompression anyway so you don't even have to manually delete the .zip file at all. |

I toss the .zip and .rar files away if they're for mp3s or video files. If the zip files are used for softwares and documents, I don't toss them away. |

yeah, i need to delete some stuff soon. clean out my computer. the part about dLing two episodes, was you dL the .zip/.rar file which has 170 mbs and after you extract them, you get another 170 mbs which is the .avi video that you view. you don't view the .rar file, but it's almost like another episode (just, you can't view it). thanks for letting me know what you guys do. although, guess it's almost something to do when you begin to dL a lot of stuff like anime and music, right? :3 *sigh* another thing added to my to-do list... ![]() ------- |

I always toss the right after extracting stuff from it. Or else it would burden my memory.(Even if i got loads of unlimited space) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

lol, Denjiru was beating around the bush. XD anyway~ uh-huh. i delete them after i extracted the contents. it's saves more space that way. ^^" if it's something like documents, programs, software thingies, why not make a folder on your second hard drive and place it all there? and it won't even be deleted even if you reformat your computer! :] ![]() *insert epic picture here* |

I've always kept the .rar file just incase I lose/misplace the actual extracted file/folder/content. Just in the case that I forgot the site where I got it from, accidentally deleted the main source, or in some cases, just to be able to send them to someone all in one .rar/.zip file instead of handing them the jpeg/gif/mp3/mp4 one by one. (I.E. Album) ....yeah, so basically I just keep them. xD ![]() ![]() |

thanks for your opinion, maia-hime. your first line sounded so out-of-topic gross for some reason. ^.^; (XD) i deleted some of the .rar files relating to anime so far. i also deleted some mmorpg zip files too, since i don't play those anymore. might as well un-install everything and remove 'em all in one go one day. now to see how much free space is left on my computer... /hmmm~ ![]() ------- |

when i download mangas packaged in a zip/rar file, i leave it as it is. i use a program that lets me view the manga pages/content/pictures of the compressed file. this way, i don't need to extract them which allows me to conserve my hard disk's memory but for non-manga downloads, i delete the rar/zip files after extracting them. |
