How weird, but anyways, Classical stuff is very very vague, and Orchestral music is only one part of it, songs played by an orchestra. There are classical music pieces that are choir pieces, opera, instrumental solos, to name a few. Some of this stuff is hard to listen, because you would need to be a seasoned musician to listen and like stuff like Bach and Haydn. However

I will suggest these easy listening tunes:

Vocalise, by Rachmaninov(I think thats how you spell it)
Lilium, from the anime Elfen Lied
The Swan, From Carnival of Animals by Saint-Seans
And maybe this too, Caruso, sung by Pavarotti

I hope I didn't break any rules on this post... ^.^;;

As a classically trained musician, I would have to say that reccommending a classical piece really depends upon your personal taste in music.
From anime's your best bets would be Mononoke Hime, from Princess Mononoke, or most any other song from a Hayo Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli film (i.e. Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Nausiica of the Valley of the Wind, ect.), also there are a few selections from Neon Genesis Evangelion, such as Pachelbel's Cannon in D, and Jesus Bliebet Mien Frueind (Please forgive any Spelling Errors, just search for Evangelion, & you should find what I'm talking about).

Otherwise I might reccommend any movement from the Planets Suite composed by Gustav Holst.

Then, another of my favorites, there is Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.

I can't think of many more off the top of my head, but I will post here again if I come up with any more.

Gotta agree with Tenspot. This is like asking... "give me a good anime" what kind?

Joe Hisaichi does quite a bit of Miyazaki's music

Yoko Kanno does quite a bit of classical stuff in Eva and Macross and Escaflowne

re: Eva
An die Freude aka Ode to Joy aka Beethoven's 9th Symphony (though Ode is just a small part of it)

Don't forget the 3Bs (Beethoven, Bach and Brahms)

Holst is wonderful.

Anything by Mozart

Vocalise, by Rachmaninov(I think thats how you spell it)
err it's Rachmaninoff

but there's just so much.....

Good call Eiko, but I would also like to springboard off of that and add most of Pachelbell's work, as well as Chopin.

It truly is dificult to suggest just one song, as there are literally thousands to choose from, with literally hundreds, if not thousands, of individual styles of classical music, spanning from traditional (i.e. stuff like Aud Lange Syne, and Fur Elise) to more current and modern (look at most movie scores from movies like Star Wars, or Jurrasic Park)

Another one that I almost forgot to add is another of my all time favorites, is Summon The Heroes, the theme to the olympics.

John Williams did the scores for Star Wars and wrote "Olympic Spirit" for the Olympics... good stuff....

Liszt. I love Liszt

DOH! Watch Nodame Cantabile... it's ALL classical music.

Then there's Cohen for American patriotic classical.

Fanfare for the Common Man by Aaron Copeland is good too.

Everyone's pretty much said what was going to say. So I'll just suggest some songs.
Check out Baccanale from "Samson and Delilah" It's a great orchestra piece. Also, if your into Brass and Woodwinds, Listen to Toccata By Frescobaldi and Allegro Barbaro By Bela Bartok.

Totally Nodame Cantobile, especially the live action!

Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin is the best ever! A weird jazz-ish piece, but kick-ass.

The Pastoral Symphony by Beethoven is good for me when I do homework ^^; I like it.

A great piece from Nodame is Rachimaninoff's Piano Concerto no. 2, especially when it has an orchestral accompaniment.

I love classical music! I'm in my school's guitar ensemble and a good portion of the music we perform is classical.

I have a lot of favorite classical music pieces. "Symphony No. 7" by Beethoven is one of my top favorites. You should definitely listen to it if you haven't already. =)

no one really appreciates the devil's hymn
its notes are so amazing, and it's near impossible to do
i envy the composer that came up with that crazy piece

Classical music (not classic music, cuz that sounds like as if you considered some songs to be one of classics-- like classic rock (you know, these dadrock kind of thing i.e Led Zeppelin, The Doors, ACDC, Metallica etc). Classical music, I suppose, is the traditional way to make and perform music by using the musical instruments that are widely used back then, like strings (violin, viola, cello etc), harpsichord, organ, piano, woodwinds (flute), reeds (clarinet, oboe) and percussion. Like Baroque music (Bach, Mozart), the arrangement of the whole work is neat and strictly sound clear (back then, composing classical music like church music were truly strict--- the lyrics must be heard clear and not be deafened by other musical instruments, because that would let God be suspicious. I know it sounds stupid, but that was what they believed in that era). and the texture was fulfilling and free-flowing (not jazz-like XD). Orchestra is a part of classical music, since solo and duet and quartet were not enough, so they formed an orchestra--- a full set of strings, brass, woodwind, reed, organ and percussion--- to get more enrichening effect in music works. The best orchestra classical music composers, in my opinion would be Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Saint-Saens and Holst. Modern composers who likes the idea of orchestra are like Michael Kamen (arranged some Metallica's music for S&M) and Nobuo Uetmasu (in most Final Fantasy games) which to me, they are awesome.

Bwah, that's some long description. I hope I won't digress a lot there. XD

Worth listening:
Bach (best ones are Cantata series), Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saens, Holst, Nobuo Uetmasu, Michael Kamen, Apocalytica, Gerald Barry and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

I can´t believe anyone mentioned rurouni kenshin´s yet. It´s entirely orchestra.
the OVA´s (Tsuyokuhen and Seisouhen) soundtrack´s are so beautiful that they make me cry everytime i_i by the way, they are totally worth watching.
Seriously, try listening to it! I´d recommend these by memory: Pie Jesu, And You and I, Cord of Life, You by my Side, The Will, Quiet Life and Sound of Snow Falling.

OMG and I can´t believe anyone mentioned Wolf´s Rain soundtrack too! Just put ir on gendou and download everything xD no regrets there.

I just realized this is my firts post... And i´ve been on gendou for quite some time now.

Oh.. And what´s this devil´s hymn?! o_o

If you want classical music, try Tartini or Paganini (sp?). Their a bit more modern but not by that much. I love the devil's trill in particular, Particularly the version done by Vanessa Mae. ^_^ >_<

I SENSE STRANGE WAVES...

Re: Classic music suggestion
Link | by on 2007-12-28 20:09:30
depends on what kind of classic music you like
i mean
there's baroque and romantic and stuff

classic music is type of music, orchestra is type of performers.
String Orchestra consists of stringed instruments, usually violin, viola, cello, and bass
Full Orchestra (symphony orchestra, philharmonic orchestra) instruments can depend on what piece they are playing, but it is usually strings, and wind instruments. I don't want to go on making a list of them, so check it online.
