Japan - what should I buy?
|
A good friend is mine is going back to Japan for vacation in January. Although he was born in America, his parents are Christian missionaries and he was raised in Japan for twelve years. He said that he would be glad to bring me back anything that I asked for so long as I told him in advance and gave him the money for it. So far, I have come up with the following (although I have not finalized the list or made any cuts): -Gundam 00 Exia figurine (just an action figure, not a buildable model) -Decent bottle of Sake, not the imported stuff we get Stateside with English labels -¥1666; A ¥1000 bill, and ¥500, ¥100, ¥50,¥10,¥5, and ¥1 coins -Genshiken volumes 1-9 For most of the stuff on the list, it would cost more to import it than it would for him to buy it there and bring it back (with the exception of the coins, as I could just get them at a money changing place...). What I am really looking for, though, is some neat little things I could get that I could not otherwise purchase from some anime import site. I would like to avoid buying and tourist trap junk, so yeah - does anyone have any suggestions? What would you buy if you had a week to spend in Japan and some cash to blow? Thanks. |

I dunno about otaku related stuff and such, but I heard you can buy shaped fruit in japan, like an apple in the shape of a cube. Personally, I've always wanted a sarahi (a cloth worn round the waist to denote manliness) I never been able to even find a place online that sells them. |

I'm guessing you are a guy, and depending on how old you are and how obsessive or perverted you may be I can suggest some things. Your christian friend may not be willing to buy them though. My friend went there on a christian mission/fun trip, he was also an anime fan and I had him buy me a few things, some manga, the most recent issue of newtype magazine, and some yen coins. Body pilow (with favorite female anime character of choice) More manga recent Newtype magazines (each one has a CD or DVD in it i think) Japanese games (assuming you have the ability to mod your console) (If you have an xbox 360 that is english (preferably japanese) if you are good with computers you can get a mod chip that will allow you to play on xbox live and play other region games. If you do that I suggest you try and get IDOLM@STER, awesome game.) Japanese dating sims (most are 18+ so if you friend isn't he can't buy them) Anime figurines Lots and lots of pictures of the scenery and anime shops and things Japanese Anime dvds - there are lots of stores that will sell slightly old stuff dirt cheap depending on where you look Wall scrolls And I think thats all off the top of my head. I'm 18 and considering going this summer myself or next summer. I think I'll saving up something like $5000 USD for the cost of the flight and expenses for two weeks and buying everything I want. |
