OK, so what's the word さあ used for in Japanese? I've got it in my text, but the teacher didn't explain it. I'm clueless about it; plz help!

さあ - means like "it's time; come now"

example:

well, shall we go?

well, we shall stop here.

now, shall we eat?

That's fine; but is there a difference between さあ and just plain さ. I'll illustrate with an example. Here's two lines from a song by Mika Nakashima:
お この 淋しい さ に
いつか 終わりは あるの?
What's the 'sa' in the first line mean here?

the "さあ" is quite onomatopoeia-ish too in my opinion, it's a sensing type of stuff, sometimes
even too detailed that most people would have looked over...

"お この 淋しい さ に
いつか 終わりは あるの?"

should have been

that ”さ” is a part of the noun -> 淋しさ(sabishisa) which means "loneliness"

for that "さ" you are talking about is like an assertion, possibly confidence too; is mostly used at the end of the sentence

mamoru's example:

(it's not like that)
君はさー、数学の先生のことをどう思いますか?(what is your opinion on the math teacher?)
(I'm planning to return to France tomorrow)

well さあ have other usage too

such as

that means
"kenji, do you know where my cellphone is? i left it here back then"
"dunno"

「さあー」for me would be a little lacking :P
i would be waiting for that person to answer more than that...

「けんじ君、僕のケータイしてる」---> i understand as "kenji kun, my mobile is doing"
i assume it's 「けんじ君、僕のけいたいを知ってる?」 ---> "do you know my mobile?"

should have been 「けんじ君、僕のけいたいはどこにあるかを知ってるの?」
