I hope someone didn't already make a thread about this(I'm sorry if there is, I must've missed it). I think this happened a while back but I was actually just informed today from my cousin so I looked it up. So apparently, this 10 boy and a bunch of his friends tried to 'master sand' when the boy, Codey/Cody I believe, was buried head first in the sandbox in his backyard by his friends from the head to his chest. It's most likely from watching Naruto. Though someone called it a 'cartoon' which the characters are 'sand masters' so there's still a slight chance(very small-can only think of Gaara from that description) it may not be Naruto but the news people say it was. I really want to express my opinions about this, in defense of Naruto(and all anime) since these people decide it's anime's fault that this happened. I'm not looking for a reply, I just want to let it out before I boil over. But people can reply if they want to(please don't bash people! Or ANIME for that matter! If you get bored, just leave!) I want to rant and get this off my chest! Naruto can't, it just CANNOT, be blamed for this. 1. The boy's 10 year-old! They say he's got a great imagination but I think that imaginations of his caused him a little confusion between reality and anime. What 10 year-old is dumb enough to try that?! No offense to the child, he had friends that takes part of the blame too for going along with it. Does this generation have NO COMMON SENSE anymore?! One of my cousins is 10 years-old. She was asked if she would try something like that, or anything relating to the Naruto skills, abilities, etc...and she said 'no.' She loves Naruto, but she didn't know about this when we(her sister and I) asked. I can't even imagine Satoshi/Ash Ketchum of Pokémon(who is dense, not stupid) doing something like THAT in seasons 1-4! Okay, maybe another anime isn't a great example. What about Bart Simpson(cartoon-giving it a shot). Sure he's an idiot but I don't think he'd so something that he knows will most likely get him killed(in trouble, yes, but not killed). Okay fine, Bart may no be the best example either since the Simpson family doesn't die anyway. I think my reality example with my cousin is good enough. 2. The Naruto dub is TV-PG. It's unsuitable for young children without parents/guardians watching with them. I'm not sure what 'young children' is but say 10 is considered a young child. He shouldn't of had been watching Naruto without a parent. Now if the parents were there, maybe they should remind their child that the things they do in there are not real every now and then. Or, on a lighter term "Remember, only ninjas can do that." Let's say the parents WERE NOT watching their son when he watched Naruto. That takes the blame off Naruto right there. It says it's TV-PG, so that the audience KNOWS what they're rated and who should or should no watch it! I'm sorry (parents), but if the parents don't check the rating PRINTED CLEARLY ON THE SCREEN, then it's just not fair to the anime to take the blame like that when it already did it's part to let the audience know who's allowed to watch it and under what circumstances. 3. Just b/c Naruto's an anime doesn't mean they should take the blame for everything and every time! You can't tell me someone did not at least get hurt from trying to imitate Spider-Man, Superman, the Hulk, etc... You cannot tell me that some child has no tried flying like Peter Pan by jumping off beds and furniture. Why does no one ever blame DC, Marvel, Disney, etc...for these kinds of actions!? It's always ANIME! Just b/c it's from Japan doesn't mean it doesn't have rights. It's not like they're trying to get revenge from WWII with anime! Sheesh! Its ridicules! Okay...I feel so much better now! Even if I did forget to put in something, I feel better.^^ Note that I'm not changing my mind either so just don't argue with me if you disagree or hate anime(then again, if you hate anime, why are you even in the anime section? Or on this site for that matter!?).

Yeah, I saw this on the news. And ummm, quite frankly, I didn't really feel anything when I heard it, just very surprised. Also, I was more occupied laughing at how the news reporter pronounced Naruto. :P Sorry, I don't have a heart. XDD;; But yeah, they should not blame this on the show or anime at all, since it was their own fault and they brought it upon themselves. |

Bah! it all the same, well there used USED to be this smackdown show in my country TV channel, late at night around 23PM...... but then this kid, starting to imitate this wrestling thing, some get kill (well duh clothline to the floor) anyway, the show been banned, and smackdown being put to blame well, the people is a donkey, and doesn't have the brain, the show really late at night 23PM then eventually put to 1am, how the heck the children going to watch that kinda shown if their parent doesn't allow them to sleep 3AM in the morning, some smart looking government people i guess.... well that was smackdown, but you can see the parallel line here, TV reporters and NEWS just hate them you know, games and anime, it's just that they felt like their rating is in jeopardy with the next generation if this things goes on. Bah. |

Okay, plenty of people bury themselves in sand and "don't escape". Why would anyone blame this on some TV show? And even if they did blame it on Naruto or whatever "cartoon" for that matter, who cares? It's like not their responsible for whatever you do. Your own actions are your own actions, don't blame others. Personally, why the hell would you stick your head in a box of sand. There's no way a 10 year old kid can escape being buried up to his CHEST in sand! This is like a Jackass stunt gone seriously wrong. I mean, it's a clear thought/opinion from me. Stupid stunts like these happen ALL THE TIME! Please. [sidenote] If you hate anime, well you wouldn't be here anyways. ;P ------- |

So true... I remember the Nice Boat incident.. After a japanese teenage girl killed her father with a hatchet "School Days [episode 12]" and "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai" were either cancelled, or moved their schedule due to suspicion of the animes giving influence... There is also a boy who killed his mother with a baseball bat because of Evangelion's philosophies... |

I don't think re-rate Naruto and other anime shows can be of any help for parents. Funny enough, anime is the kind of cartoons that has controlled violence that the director imposed in order for suitable viewing for targeted viewers. If you see Looney Tunes and Mickey Mouse Works, omfg, the violence in there is so viral and terrible and uncontrollable, and I don't know how can children (especially young children) can enjoy watching to that violence! I would say no one is blamed for the death of a 10-year boy, because the freak accident is unforeseeable, and no one has ever died that way. The parents should be more aware of the influential power within characters of Naruto, but they still can't be blamed, like I said, the death's unforeseeable to the eyes of the law. It's all the power of influence towards viewers. And the viewers may test that stunt to equate with reality. |

A good reason why incompetant people shouldn't watch incompetant shows.Besides, its the adults fault for not watching the kid. Theres giving your kid space, and then theres negligence. |

@Key you mean our country? XP Personally... I Think that It's The parent's Fault.. Well, they should at least accompany the kid when they are watching the anime.. And Yeah XDD Why would you even bury yourself in a pile of sand anyway? |

The victim is a 10yr. old boy right?Isn't he old enough to know that playing like that is something that can get him in big trouble?.. I agree with everyone above me.. A boy a this age is around *grade 4 here in Phils* so that means he would have been a bit disciplined at least? + He may had lacked guidance from his parents.. Coz he wouldn't be doing something so reckless if he was oriented in some way... And his friends are also somehow to be blamed.. It'really odd that no one stopped him or something..~ |

wut... a... bunch... of... crap... see this is exactly what happens when stupid shows like naruto come into play. I mean u have a wayyyyy over enthusiactic main character and a bunch of physco stupid other characters. Of course a kid is gonna be like "ooooh i wanna be just like him" and imitate SOMETHING from the show. lol and yea i blame the cartoon (cuz i hate it ^^) but also the parents i mean seriously, the manga is rated T in my country and the show (regardless of whether or not its on toonami) is TV-PG for violence. I blame the parents for not bein more responsible as well yo.

I feel really sorry for that kid. I really do. But, I mean, he's 10 years old and tries to 'control' sand by burying himself? ftw!? It's not anime's fault for sure, and I love how in the news cast they say 'nuhrooto' and they're 'sand masters'. And I also feel pretty terrible for the parents. Now, I agree that maybe they should have monitored what he was watching but it's not under their control if they're kid decides to get buried in a sand box. Anyway, I guess I said enough about it.

I don't think anime is at fault here. True, there ARE many other cartoons that have violence and mature themes that children are watching. I agree; why blame anime?! Sure, it was an idiotic thing to do, but even something as simple as peer pressure couldve caused it!! Why is it people judge anime for its themes if they havent seen any anime themselves? I don't believe Naruto is at fault, but it may have inspired the idea.
