Anime From the 90s
|
Has anyone seen anime from the 90s/late 80s? I'm talking about series like Lain, NTHT, Sailor Moon, Record of Lodoss War... How do you think these series (including the ones I left out, like NGE, no harm meant) compare to today's titles?

for someone growing up in the 90's i'd say some can still hold it's own by today's standards (by that i mean art wise) while older shows from the 80's to early 90's haven't aged very well and the lack of quality is unavoidable... |

I somewhat disagree. Certain shows from the 80s like SDF Macross have aged quite well (although I do agree the majority haven't). In terms of the range of quality, heck, compare the animation quality of Gundam X or Gundam Wing to that of 08th MS Team. Those are all gundam shows but even still you can tell the difference in quality (08th MS Team definitely had a higher budget....which isn't too surprising seeing as it's UC but that's beside the point). Cel animation will always hold a special place for me, and even though computer rendered animations have pretty much taken over, you can't replicate the same feelings or styles in CG as you can make with cels.

Compared to the 90s, I definitely think appearance is the most improved thing in anime. Animation, artwork, graphics, special effects, etc. All that stuff, compared to the 90s has definitely bettered itself since the previous decade. Although story lines haven't increased that much, there are still great animes coming out, have been out, etc. that are still enjoyable. Though we're still moving on at a pretty fast pace, I won't forget the titles in the 90s that I still love today (GTO, Kare Kano, etc.). ------- |

Being someone who was opened to teh anime world in teh late 90's and had gotten used to teh new ones, I'll say that they really had improved just by a but in terms of appearance and storyline/plot. (even though almost all ideas aren't original anymore) The only thing that makes the titles from the 90s somehow better than the recent titles is the animation and some artworks. Before, digital animation doesn't make up almost all teh animes, all were made manually... producing vivid images and such. Also, recently... almost all anime titles looks like teh same as teh other... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

sure todays titles look better regarding facial appearances but id wish they made some decent anime its always about school, or fanservicing these days. I can always count on gundam or clamp to make some interesting anime. i think comparing now and the late 90's is pointless cause theyre similar. have you seen anime from the 70's? like wow i think theres a major change now. looking back at the first gundams characters the people look so amazing now. |

Not just quality wise, but look at the hairstyles....jeez, Macross was a real shock for me when I saw it the first time...Hayase's hair was hideous...

I already miss Macross Plus. The love story really is great. It also test the friendship of two best friends. My favorite mechs in the 90s are Gaogaigar, G,W & X Gundams.

Some hold up well, for example Serial Experiments Lain is not dated at all by anything in the show and the Black Jack OVA's are timeless in my opinion. |

ranma 1/2, yu yu hakusho, wedding peach, sailor moon, jubei-chan, dragonball/z/gt, kare kano, cardcaptor sakura, the list goes on and on for great anime from the 80's and 90's. the quality of animation and art have definitely improved over the years. some of the stories and plots are just one of a kind though.

The biggest difference is animation, quality, art style, etc, etc - It's obvious theres a HUGE jump between the anime of 'yesterday' and the anime of 'Today' in those categories. But, other then that, I tihnk there are anime from back then that are still great. Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon, the Entire Dragon Ball/Z/GT, Yu Yu Hakusho, Card Captor Sakura, All of the Many Gundam Series, etc - they are all amazing and can still rival other anime from today in terms of story, characters, and the ability to 'fall in love' with the anime. |

If it's old anime - i know a LOT, as old anime's my specialization in the anime :D Aside from named here i think you should also mention Video Girl Ai, Mamono Hunter Yohko, Hand Maid May, Nurse Angel Ririka, Dual, Akazukin Chacha, Devilman, Cutie Honey Flash, Visions of Escaflone, Wedding Peach, Digi Charat, Tokimeki Memorial OVA, Monster, Legend of the Dragon Kings, 3x3 Eyes, Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko, Tenshi ni Narumon, Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto, Mahou Tsukai Tai, Zenki, Clamp Gakuen Tanteidan, Haibane Renmei, DNA2, Kaitou Saint Tail, Saber Marionette. I'm not sure about the date of most of what i named, but they're probably all 95-. I know more, but they've been stated already :) Oh, and i haven't seen about 30% of what i named, so i can't say much about it :) |
