Okay, here is what I remember about the series: it was very pokemon-like, where kids would link up with these monster like creatures and fight each other with them. The lead girl's was shaped a lot like a star. After the first few episodes, the series took a serious turn to more depressing, with the lead's friend being depressed, and contemplating suicide. Another character gives her a knife telling her that unlike her own knives, his would be sharp enough to finish the job. Eventually she becomes a hikikomori spending all day in her dark room. I believe that the lead eventually ends up being forced to kill the people around her to survive, no matter what she wanted. Ended with her entering the top high school to top off a nice allegory of the Japanese school system. It wasn't Digimon. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks! ----EDIT----- Got it! Narutaru.
