Why all the praise?

So one thing that I've noticed is that people like Square-Enix. I mean they like Square-Enix A LOT. However, I am curious to know why do people love them so and hail them as the "greatest of all time." It's not like they haven't made bad games, (FF:XII and DQ:Swords I'm looking at you). The only reason this really bothers me is that there are so many people that consider every other type of rpg inferior just because "SE didn't make it so it can't be good," or if the game happens to be bad the classic "well that must have been made by the Enix division of SE." They are also notorious for whoring out their properties to drain them of every penny, the prime example being the countless ports of the older FF games to other consoles. So can someone tell me why people treat them as some God-like company? P.S. I like Square-Enix as a company, I just don't LOVE them, so please do not misconstrue this topic as an attack. I would just like to hear some opinions. ^__^ |

I for one don't like them. Everything they made after FF:VII started going downhill fast to me. Also, like Matt said, SE has become the whore of video game companies, bleeding as much money from games as possible. The only company I've seen do more of this than SE is Nintendo, who slap Mario on something and milk it for everything it's worth. |

I like Square-Enix because they have produced a few of my fave games, but I don't hail them as the best game producers in the world. I mean, if I see something by them, I'll be interested (like Infinite Undiscovery). However, just because it's by Square-Enix isn't enough incentive to make me want to play a game produced by them. It just piques my interest. Did you make this thread because you saw my forum thread about Infinite Undiscovery? O_o' Sorry if my comment "When I saw that it was from Square-Enix, I felt my gamer-side start itching to play it," set you off. >_< It's just the interest kicking in! |

Haha, no I didn't make it in response to your thread. It's just been something that has been bothering me for quite some time now. Mostly because I live with/around a bunch of Square-Enix fanboys. Which can tend to get very annoying at times. I just want to know why so many people are blindly loyal to Square-Enix you know? They are also responsible for a few of my favorite games as well, but I just don't follow everything they produce. |
Re: Why all the praise?

Those are fanboys. Plain and simple. Loyal blind subjects which are ignorant to others. Casual and true gamers should not be bothered with comments from the fanboys. Which base their likes from groundless reasons. (graphics, the company, etc...) If they were posers though that's a different story altogether. These guys act like fanboys but are just really following the current trend and have not actually understood what being a "fan" is. Kneel Before the Great and Benevolent Cow! |

i'ma have to say... square-enix is starting to lose it because their remaking Chrono trigger, on top of that also remaking Dragonquest IV-VI on DS (which i find Awesome but to some ppl it's a nono)& remakes of star ocean 1 & 2. i believe that Square-enix is partially losing ideas for new games & is considering to remake their old ones which makes this bad on their part, true or not their already on the move with it & i'm probably gonna lose hope for them |

What about fangirls? >_< Not that I'm one, but there are Square-Enix fangirls out there...right? O_o' Square-Enix is just a bit overrated sometimes...or rabid fans blow things out of proportion and make too much of a big deal out of SE and the classic games they've made (like KH...obsessed about quite a bit) Me thinks we actually have to ask a Square-Enix fan to explain the base of their logic b/c I'm not even sure why people love Square-Enix as much as they do. I play a video game for the game itself, not because a certain company produced it or a past game that I liked if that makes sense. |

Does everyone remember when Square was just a small japanese company that was about to shut down when an employee named Hironbu Sakaguchi basically said lets create one more game & called it our 'Final Fantasy'. That is where it all started..... Where did it all go wrong? I'll tell you... Long ago Square was a 'people' company. Just content on making good games to survive. With the success of the 1st Final Fantasy they realized that this was something good. They expanded on their number 1 franchise by making more great games from FF 2 to 6. Of course their were side projects that also garnerd high regards like the Chrono series, Mana series & later Xenogears. Everything changed with one title... FINAL FANTASY 7!! The massive success of FF7 opened new doors in gaming & more casual gamers now know about this one time small company. No longer were diehards the only ones that played RPGs..they became more mainstream. FF7 made that small company to now a large global powerhouse in the gaming world. All that success got to their heads & filled those egos until they were about to POP! & POP it did! Games that followed FF7 were all good but never really matched the worldwide success of FF7. The man who started it all tried to go into showbusiness...we all know how that turned out don't we? *side note: It was actually a decent movie but nobody got it* Anyways that failure led to a massive hit on the stocks & for that Hironbu Sakaguchi was ceremoniously kicked out. He left on his own accord but his departure was just the beginning. After Mr.Final Fantasy left it was long time composer Uematsu, than the minds behind Chrono Cross & Xenogears also left the company. Alot of talented programmers & scenarist also left. You know why there has been so many remakes & rehashing of old franchises? Cause most of the minds who came up with ideas are no longer there. The only decent guy left is Tetsuya Nomura & maybe the FF tactics guy...forgot his name ATM. Now you see why they decided to merge with a rival company like Enix. Not this BS that 2 great companies joining forces but Square needed finacial backing & game creators. Nowadays i think Squenix is much more concerned about making money than concentrating on making quality games. The old Square would often take years before they come out with a new game. Now it seems every year there would be a game made from either Square or Enix. The quality is no longer there. A perfect example is recycling the FF 7 series & why make 3 games for FF 13? Just make one GREAT one! I agree whole heartedly that it is those fanboys/girls that began playing FF7 that are regarding them as 'GODLY'....basically noobs to the company. The fans that have followed the company since their beginnings are probably like me...it's no longer about the games. They can BS that it is but we can tell it's not. Although i will continue to play games made by Squenix it now feels more boring & empty now cause sometimes the games aren't that fun anymore. They use to be my fave gaming company but now that devotion has dwindled over the years. I no longer regard them as the pinnacle....at times i do feel they are overrated. So in conclusion of my thoughts. They use to be Great but now they are just average. |

How about we just call them a "Fanatic" like a religious nut or something. It is almost similar anyways. Blind to the truth, Ignorant. Like Claudia from SH. Its the corporation. Money talks. And since they noticed the huge income that is gaming. Everyone wanted to take a piece of it. And currently the biggest thing that they think would take a good game is "graphics" and the "game name". Which is wrong. That's why they squeeze them dry. To the point that they could alter the canon (like Street Fighter, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania, etc...) and thus Retroactive Continuity. I think that's wrong, true they use the same characters, basically same story (Princess gets abducted or whatever), but all his games a different, each holding their own unique gameplay perks, which are most of the time something never tried before. I haven't seen any person play Super Mario Galaxy and not think it's fun. |

It may just be me, but I don't believe tacking on Mario characters and related items to Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Tennis and Racing is thinking outside the box in terms of sports games. I admit that Mario Party was good when you had friends to play, it was more fun than an actual board game. This: Mario's Tennis Mario Tennis — (Nintendo 64, 2000) Mario Tennis — (Game Boy Color, 2000) Mario Power Tennis Mario Tennis: Power Tour Mario Hoops 3-on-3 Mario Kart 64 Mario Kart Double Dash Mario Kart DS Mario Kart Wii Super Mario Kart Mario Kart: Super Circuit Mario Kart Arcade GP Mario Kart Arcade GP 2 Mario Strikers Super Mario Galaxy Super Paper Mario Super Paper Mario 2 Super Princess Peach New Super Mario Bros Super Mario 64 DS Super Mario Sunshine Dr. Mario Mario Paint Mario Party DS The other 8 or 9 Mario Party's available Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros 3 (WTF?) Mario Golf Mario Advance Tour seems like milking to me. I probably didn't even cover half of the games he has. I, personally, am just plain sick of seeing Mario in every possible situation, sport or place. Also: I played Super Mario Galaxy and found it not very engrossing. The Wii (Other than maybe Tales of Symphonia 2 or Super Smash Bros with friends) will typically be entertaining for roughly 20 minutes before I'm ready to go back to playing my PS3, or PSP, or PS2, or DS. Then again I am in the non-casual group of gamers. |

Gah, I sure don't. I liked their products better when they were Square and Enix. Uh, separate.

A lot of people hail Square-Enix (SquareSoft orginally) is because they were the makers of the Final Fantasy series mostly in my opinion. But they're are alot of other games to like Odin Sphere, Rogue Galaxy made by Level 5 and Okami made by Capcom alot of other RPG games go underapperciate because the large name Square-Enix has. |

Personally I think there's a huge confusion and a gigantic misconception. People tend to look at things like "FF7 Fangirls" and instantly label them Square-Enix fangirls. A lot of the relabeling is a little silly. You are allowed to be a fan of a company and dislike some of it's games. You're allowed to even be a die hard fan and still not like something. I for one love many aspects of Square-Enix. I'm a nostalgia gamer, so the remakes and reproductions of older games, to me, are amazing, I love them, can't get enough, while a lot of the newer stuff is up in the air. I liked FFXII I hate FFVIII (Seriously, you must have noticed my ranting.) I loved FFIX I'm an avid FFXI player I hate most of the Collection of FFVII line. I love the prospects of FFXIII and FFXIV. I detest the mention of Blitzball. I think Tidus and Squall were both whiny Emo Gits. I believe Zidane is the quintessential FF Lead character. I've played every Dragon Quest and love them. I've played every FF and I have mixed feelings. Seiken Densetsu is one of my favorite games. Later "of Mana" games irk me for some reason. SaGa will always live on in my heart. The last SaGa game made me cry emo tears. In short, I call myself an SE Fangirl, perhaps I don't fit the stereotype displayed. |

Square-Enix is a good company, they produce playable games. However, they will also sometimes produce some ridiculous games also (Kingdom Hearts, in my opinion) much like all video game companies. Its like food service. You are served a good steak, so you will tend to try other foods from that restaurant. This is how I look at it anyway. SE has made games that I like, so I will tend to look for their label when searching for new games. However, I also like Bandai, Natsume, Nintendo, and many other companies. To say that only SE makes good RPGs is closed minded. It would be like finding a good restaurant and eating the same thing there for the rest of your life.

Square and Enix, later as Square-Enix, have long been tied to console success. We can directly trace top selling systems with the presence of these companies through the history of console gaming. The most marking shift was when Square hopped platforms from Nintendo to Sony due to the hope in media performance and the usage of CD-ROMs allowing Square to work with bigger and better files to produce their games. This relationship continued into the PS2, which also saw rocketing success in comparison to other systems as the then labeled Square-Enix put most of it's game support on that one console. Of late that mindset has been losing pace however, as SE has decided a multiconsole, multifranchise route is the better answer, financially they're right of course, people tend to associate SE with quality games. Hence the reasons so many people hold them in high regard. |

There are a few things that kinda irked the old school fans (like myself) of the company. After the company got 'BIG' with all the success they had supporting the Sony brand i, in my opinion got too full of themselves. The decision to go multi-platform is not a big deal but the comment i think the head of the Squenix (forget his name atm) said was the thing that pissed off many. The comment i believe stated that the decision to go multi was not only to increase the chance for profits but also that they didn't want one console to be the sole 'winner'. It was this arrogant way of thinking that was soo different from what they use to be....a humble japanese company that was almost on the verge of folding. If you don't know that story than you should look it up. Anyways the idea that they were the sole reason that the Playstation brand was so popular at the time was laughable. I admit i still like playing their games for the most part, but it's not the same as it use to be when it was quality over quanity. Enix was like that too....the merger seem to make them the same. |
