ok, your asking the right gendou. check it out: the coolest place for seeing temples and shrines is KYOTO. hit kiyomizu dera, and fushimi inari jinja. if you like to hike, climb mt. hiei, its buddha-riffic! While you are in the kansai area, check out OSAKA for shopping malls and takoyaki and okonomiyaki, yummy!!! Also, if you have time, go to NARA and see the deer park, they are so cute -^_^- If you are into japanese history, you may want to check to check out kamakura in TOKYO. Also check out ueno kouen in TOKYO, its really neat. Also shikoku is worth the trip, cause there are lots of other big tourist places like KOMPIRASAN and DOGO ONSEN. hope that helps |

hmm, I think I liked visiting Nara & Kyoto the best. Also, going up north to Hokaido is great as well - it's got a whole lot more nature that the other main islands do, because it was taken by the Japanese much later. Hokkaido is also home to the Ainu - the native people of Japan (yes, they have Aboriginal people as well.). When I was in Japan, I lived in Nagoya for the time I was there, and took trips to other places from there. It's a good place to stay, since it's sort of central to the major tourist cities, as well as having fantastic things to see there as well. Pretty much any city is great to go to though, even without going to all the major destinations, because Japanese culture is so different than that of North American culture. Even just walking down the street to the local shrine or temple, is a fun thing. But yes, my highest recomendations are Nagoya, for it's centrality (two hours by Bullet train to Tokyo or Kyoto), and Nara, for it's awsome historical stuff (oldest standing wooden structures in the world), and Kyoto, for it's history and beauty. Tokyo has it's own highlights, of course, like Tokyo TV tower, Disneyland, the Imperial Palace, and other famous places. Osaka...um....I only went to Osaka once, and that was for Universal Studios, I'm sorry to say. I would have enjoyed going for other things, but that never happened :( Okinawa is also supposed to be a nice place to visit as well :)
can you say pink socks? and green hair? :P
