Bizarre and intermittent problem
Link | by Jitman on 2008-11-26 09:09:35
Downloading on a Win 98SE PC, Broadband Connection, Firefox 2 browser.

This has only happened to me a couple of times, but when I click on the link, that should lead to the Save File dialogue, instead the browser changes page, The Quicktime Logo appears in the middle of the screen, and it apparently tries to load the mp3 file directly into the browser.

I say tries, as it leaves to the browser freezing up and forcing a restart (of the browser).

As I said, it's only happened to me a couple of times, and then only during that session.

Strange. I see no strange entries in the log file.
It looks like your browser was able to download the while mp3 just fine.
Is the problem repeatable by clicking on the same song?
I theorize that your browser is freezing up because your computer is overburdened by loading the mp3.
The Quicktime plug-in can be quite slow loading on older computers.
Now, the typical cause for the Quicktime plug-in to load would be "Content-type: audio/mp3" which I am NOT sending.
The "Content-type" being sent is most certainly "application/octet-stream".
Also, the server most certainly sends "Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=...".
So, if your browser is trying to load the content using a plug-in, it is disobeying the server's instructions very blatantly.
To remedy this, I advise you to upgrade your browser and disable your addons.

It only happened occasionally, and wasn't repeated with the same song. When the browser froze, I stopped it from Task Manager and restarted it, at which point it the file downloaded normally.

I can't understand why the browser was calling the Quicktime plug in, but it is true to say that the system resources were being overtaxed at that point. I'll have to make sure to avoid that in future. Thank you.
