I thought it may be kind of nice to have some where you could talk about recent or past books/plays/poems or any other form literature you have read.

I'm kind of a book worm so it's nice to hear other people's take on books I want or have read :)

so.... any takers?

edit:
book: "1984" George Orwell
- i hope the world never turns out like it did in this book.

play: "Macbeth" Shakespeare
- i had to read it in class. The language gets confusing at times, but overall I liked it.

poem: "Suicide's Note" Langston Hughes
- straight to the point.

Recent Books...
a recent one I liked was "I Am Legend". WAY better than the movie .

Past Books...
Wuthering Heights, Ishmael, and His Dark Materials. All three very awesome reads. And of course, Harry Potter is an embarrassingly easy read, but I just can't help but to love it.
Broach "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman to me and I'll go crazy. FREAKING LOVE THAT TRILOGY! the book, the play (tho I didnt get to see it ) AND the movie all rock.

Plays...
Richard III and The Tempest by Shakespeare...
Favorite play HAS to be "Proof" (c'mon, a play about MATH?! it SCREAMS "dood" lol) They also made a movie outta that one too. Gwenyth Paltrow go see the movie.

Recent Poems...
Can't say I read too much poetry... But I like MY poems! haha
If Edgar Allan Poe counts as poetry, then his works should be counted in this category, as they are also some of my favorites.

(wait, are we supposed to be doing RECENT books/plays we've seen/read/done? not ones we just love in general, right?)

Hm, Nice Idea. I used to read a lot but kinda stop due to lack of concentration. T_T
But I'm sure there's lots of readers here Gendou/Admin surely one of them.
You might as well want to edit your post and add some of popular books you've read so other can talk with you about it.

Ohai. I HAZ RETURN AS OF 18-APR-2020!

@dood: to get the ball rolling, i would have to say any reading in general that you love. but it would be nicer if they were recent because then you (most likely) will remember more detail.

but now i definitely will check out the book to "I am Legend" because i loved that movie ^_^.

well i just read "A Child Called It" by David Pelzer and did not know a book could bring out so many emotions out of me. Wow.

@ frazzle: My sister just read that book too... You don't happen to be living in Florida, do you?
Yes, she loved it too. hmm maybe i'll take a gander at that, now that Winter break has started and i actually have TIME to read something other than a Physics or Calculus textbook

Isnt it great though, how some peoples' favorite books were assignments that we were forced to read in Middle/High school?
I find it ironic that, for the average non-bookish student (not for a student who loves to read), they will protest to reading at first...
but end up LOVING the book, and they'll look back on it fondly!

I agree. i truly did not want to read "the great Gatsby" at first, but now i like it.

Ah, Fitzgerald... actually, i found that book and Frankenstein to be boring reads...
However, I really liked Invisible Man, Scarlet Letter, Catcher in the Rye, Fast Food Nation... hmm... a couple more, but my mind's at a blank now... I'll make an edit later
and most of my previously mentioned books/plays were read as school assignments so i loved those, obviously

gosh, what a great thread topic ♥ books (if I have the time to read 'em)

wow. i hated invisible man, it was a summer reading assignment. i spark notes it instead. but it was just my luck that the first week of school i had to write an in depth essay on it :(

but i loved catcher in the rye

=D Aw man, books!

Let's see, based off of what people have listed, I'll just say what I've read so we can have a discussion.

I actually just finished 1984 today for AP Lit class. Have a test on it on Wednesday but I think I've got it down pretty pat.

I love Catcher in the Rye.
Seriously, if you cannot relate to Holden Caulfield in someway, you must've lived a charmed life cause I know I certainly can relate.
Especially that one scene where he gets beat up by that pimp Maurice (XD No, this isn't the part I can relate to) and then pretends to get shot.
Could totally relate to this and used to do this all the time except with stabbing.
My take on it is that after Holden got beat up, the typical response from people would be like, "What a loser, getting beat up by a pimp" and they would just look down on him.
But physical pain would warrant true pity and sympathy.
(XD Sorry for the mini rant. My friends hate this book so I never get to talk about it. Guess they must've lived charmed lives... >.>)

As for plays recently read, I read Hamlet for AP Lit as well.
It was okay I guess. I wasn't really all into it.

For recreational reading I'm currently reading Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy but I haven't had a chance to really get into it because of other books for school.

Oh wow, I do nothing but read. Especially at work, when I'm supposed to be, uh, doing other stuff.

How? Free etexts from places like Project Gutenburg. Google it.

If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

well good luck on your test Wednesday, jowqi!

i really do think that catcher in the rye is a definitely rateable book. i don't know why but when he is in the taxi asking about the ducks that is my favorite part. the whole book he sounds cynical but here he allows himself to be just a regular kid. i can't really explain it :/

gendou's list makes my head spin. i wish i could wrap my mind around the art of different types of sciences. but alas, they evade me :( i'm going to just stick to english and history where i belong...

@empereorblade: i like the harry potter books too. they may not require much insight but they have the best imagery as a whole. (books pwn the movies)

"My friends hate this book so I never get to talk about it. Guess they must've lived charmed lives... >.>"

I have lived a far from charmed life and Catcher in the Rye falls squarely on my "Worst books ever read" list, landing top spot. It was the worst book I have laid eyes on and it truly made me hate English class for forcing me to read and study it. It was simply a redundant and pointless book.

Book: No Man's Land by Kevin Major
-A war story following the life of Alan Hayward and the soldiers of the Newfoundland Regiment under his command in the days leading up to the morning of July 1/1916, the first day of the Somme Offensive which resulted in the Newfoundland Regiment suffering a loss of nearly 91% of it's 750 soldiers in one of the bloodiest and most poorly handled battle of the first World War.

Play: Macbeth
-Yeah, it's common, but English teachers seem to love it. I didn't think much of it, it was kind of cool.

Maybe a little backstory is required to explain why my friends hate Catcher in the Rye.
It's mostly because they hate everything about Holden Caulfield.
They hate how whiny he is and how he never actually does anything.
And that's the entire point of the novel.
Because even after what, fifty-seven years since it was actually written, it's still completely relevant.
Holden is a lost kid who has no idea what he wants to do with his life and hates the facade people, adolescents in particular, put on this facade to be socially accepted.
And this is why it's read in almost every school in America because that's how teenagers feel and what they feel when coming of age.
They're young, they have no idea what they want to do with their lives yet everyone like Holden's teachers expect him to know what to do.
Maybe you think Catcher in the Rye is redundant and that's probably what Salinger wanted.
It's pretty much Holden just going around in circles in his head not knowing what he's supposed to do because he's never had any guidance.
I think the book takes over a span of like a day so obviously he's not going to have an epiphany in 24 hours and suddenly change into a different person.

-.- Ok, rant off.

Anyway, because of the WWI talk I was reminded of All Quiet on the Western Front.
This has to be one of the most powerful books I've read.
Basically it's about the horrors of war that soldiers on the front line are subjected to while the big guys sit and command them.
The soldiers have nothing against the opposing forces yet they're forced to kill someone who "could be [their] brother."
