Rational thinking vs. Outside-the-box thinking? By that, do you mean rational thinking against irrational thinking, or logical fixed-usage thinking against creative thinking? Such as the classic "if you have three birds on a fence and shoot one, how many birds are left? Two if you're logical, none if you're creative" thing? Provide a bit more of a basis for us to reply on, and/or specific circumstances you're thinking of, and we'll be more likely to talk! |

You can't say one is superior to the other, because both of them are needed in different situations. While out-of-the-box thinking sounds better and seems smarter, it is by no means the only kind of thinking people are supposed to employ. |

To me, outside the box thinking would be one of the steps of a rational think, I mean, if you have considered all more traditional approaches to a certain problem it's natural to go to something more different, outside the box. Just because it's not an orthodox things doesn't mean it's not racional. So there isn't much to discuss on that. |

kind of similar to our discussion on economics. both have their plus and negatives. in my own understanding. rational thinking is much more secure, since its based mostly on fact, but could be slow on progress since most new ideas only are only based on theories. while outside the box thinking has more risks and prone to failures(failure is the key to success some may say), but the bigger the risk the bigger the reward(some may also say). |

Hmm... I wouldn't say that "rational thinking" is meant to set within the same debate as "outside of the box" thinking. Thinking outside of the box can be set upon by a very rational train of thought. Stepping outside of the box is simply employing tactics or ideas that one hasn't come upon or been taught in the past. In that sense, once you employ an idea that is outside of the box, accomplish said idea and the idea is widely accepted, it is put into the proverbial box. That said, Outside of the box thinking can also be purely irrational. So... Should the topic really be Rational Thinking vs. Outside of the Box thinking, or conventional vs. unconventional (outside of the box)? |

Well, I think the topic should be inside-thebox-thinking vs. outside-the-box-thinking... and, actually, some theories said that we can't think irrationally. It's hard to said why, but I'll try...: rational means the thing you are thinking can be thought by human's mind. since we're humans, everything we're thinking about will be something humans can think of. ![]() |

Some would say that rational thinking is step by step and logica. Irrational thinking would then be thinking that is accomplished through emotion response, rather than logical. But, I do see where you're coming from. Even in emotional response, we -as humans- tend to consider several points before acting. |

Yo!Nice thread~ By the way, rational thinking just simply means observing everything that surrounds you carefully and in depth. That just means "think twice before you do things" Kay chow! |

There is no such thing as outside-of-the-box thinking. You can think in a bigger box than the other person, or you may be better at some topics, like maths, while the other person may be good at politics and economy, but there _is_ a box around you. Outside is what you have never thought about. |
