can you learn to speak Japanese perfectly?
Link | by GaiJin on 2005-06-08 12:27:46
like native level. I ask this because that's what im aiming for/want to, but people suck.

speceficly all those studies saying after a certian age, your mind stops working a certian way and its impossible for you to learn a new language perfectly and you will always carry around an accent.

i don't know what to believe. I don't know who speceficlly to ask either. Either way, i dont want it to seem like some impossible task.

so mabye someone here has some insight that I couldn't find.

If you are japanese you must speak to me for I am always trying to learn new things!

gaijin are gaijin no matter how hard they try.
if you learn japanese as a second lanugage, you will have some accent.
it is possible to practice enough so that your gaijin friend's cant hear it, but to the japanese ear you will always have some descernable accent.

Hontoni?! (Really?!)
I'm suprized by that, because my friends who are american say i sound exactly like the people on anime, except when i put on one of my wierd accents. and my friends who are japanese say my pronounciation is dead on. I can't do a Spanish accent that well though...My Spanish teacher says I'm close, though...I could never do a French accent when i took French, though. So maybe it just depends on the person. or how much of the language you are exposed to daily.

@Raze: have you ever been to japan? can spot a gaijin a mile away. study for 50 years and you will still sound like a gaijin to the antive japanese ear.

I think it's possible to become fluent in another language if you practice enough and have the right teachings. It is much harder to learn a language when you're older, as your mind is set to working in a certain way for how it forms sentences. It's quite sad that in most places in the US you don't get an option for a foreign language class until junior high or so.

I don't see any problem with accents though. They're natural, and I think they're kind of fun, well, so long as the accent isn't so thick that you can't understand it. Hehe.

There is no such thing as "perfect". Even native people aren't perfect at it. A good example is Torie Yui on the Fruits Basket dvds... her and Seki Tomokazu were talking and she mentioned how Yuki goes "kyu", when she meant "chu".(Mouse noises)

And, I don't like to correct people but, you are right Gendou, an American(or whatever ethnic group) that learns Japanese and speaks it well, will still sound like a gaijin. But I don't think it is about the sound, it's because they know you aren't Japanese and so they will automatic see you as a gaijin. Being a gaijin has nothing to do with speech, it's appearance. Granted, a weird accent will mark you as a gaijin, but I believe it is more on looks. But I could be wrong ^^U

but i'm wondering can i get my japanese so well that even on the inside they'll have to admit, i sound japanese.

I know some people no matter how good my langauge is wont admit it or let themselves admit it, but can I get people think

"holy shh** this black guy's japanese...i wouldn't have been able to tell the difference!"

like if i got a speech coach and such. it seems our gendou admin had a bad experience :(.

I'm not sure what you mean by perfect Japanese. The accents thingy is natural in natives. They're supposed to speak fast and be extremely general. If you were to drop in on a conversation it would be hard to differentiate who is asking "How are you feeling". I always thought Jap would be specific with all the words it uses and particles but it really isn't.

My jap teacher had a son and he doesn't look remotely Jap. His father is caucasion i think so it would be surprising if he suddenly spoke Jap in a conversation in the near future. But that's beside the point because he's going to grow up learning the language. It doesn't matter how you sound when speaking Jap, it's matter of speaking it well.

i can learn to speak it well, its just a mature of sctructure and knowing how to respond etc.

but the accent thing is something im not 100% sure of.

are you saying a japanese person would be more impressed if i said my wording in a more japanese authentic way vs. how my accent is?

for example if a forigner said something like

"wow that's fucking garbage, i can't believe that piece of shit thinks he's god."

my jaws would drop. if a foreigner had no accent at all, i might wow is pretty good.

Vocally its possible not to have an accent only if:

1) the pronounciation system of you native languge is similar to the languge you learn( NO, the pronounciation system of Japanese is not like any other latin/romanic/germanic based languge, for you who dont know English is latin-germanic languge).

2) have a really flexable voice+ good hearing to little diffrences in voice and pronounciation ( If you got those I am preety sure that you can get a dubber job easilly, after a little trainig of course)

Well Gaijin I'm not positively sure but perhaps you can because my boyfriend who is Southeast Asian has spoken Japanese for the past 8 years and he speaks it VERY welll. It has a lot if not all to do with understanding the culture and being able to integrate the culture with one's tongue, if you get what I mean. It's not enough to try to sound japanese you've got to also acquire some of their customs.

This is funny cuz my bf & I were wondering ourselves last friday the same thing. We're friends with the owners of our favorite Japanese Restaurant, and we asked them if my bf's accent was close to being Japanese (he speaks to them in Japanese only). They said that his japanese accent is very good. And that he could pass for being the 1st generation of a japanese family. So that just means that with hard work he could TRY to sound completly Japanese and with time perhaps it'll happen.

No one speaks a language perfectly, even (or should I say especially) native speakers make mistakes. Many native speakers of a language may study it at school and find out that their grammar/writing/or whatever sucks.

well, it is impossible to sound JUST LIKE A JAPANESE NATIVE, but you can get really close. for example, me [XD]~ I only stayed in us for a year and a half and canada for 2 years and my English is as good as a native~~~ well, almost anyways... and it's not like all natives can use that language PERFECTLY. Like, my grandpa doesn't even know how to READ chinese [let alone write]... and for god's sake he lived there for like 70 years....

Words of advice from a Japanese (or half japanese) person: They are starting to revert back to using the term "Nippon" rather than "Nihon" which is how they used to say it a while back. I noticed this when I visited last summer, they referred to japanese as "Nippon-jin" and Japan as "Nippon." I guess it's coming back nto style or something...
