gameplay

before I thought that story was enough but seeing how suikoden 3 does not anymore

so at least a reasonable gamplay to go through the story

story (I do love story even if the gameplay was a bit no-no but I can bear, but if the gameplay really suck then...)

camera angle

well the rest is technical, loading, music, bla bla bla

for me those 3 was the major issue

I agree on that. Add to that is the style of battle system. Is it tactics? turn based tactics? RTS(Real Time Strategy)? or BLITZ as Valkyria Chronicles introduced?

yea i used to think story was enough and as long as i loved the story the rest did not matter. I was wrong because recently i've played games with horrible gameplay and music(wont say) but it made me think is story enough. Oh and the battle system must be fun and keep you into it.

Add in some "originality", which the majority of MMOs today, lack, IMO.

Well my favorite RPG is Oblivion of the Elder Scrolls series.
So I would have to say that multiple missions and story paths and an awesome soundtrack really make a good RPG.

the story, battle system, music, multiple endings, the most important is the length!!! the longer it is the better just like kira said ^^

Thousands and thousands of random battles, every 2 steps.

For sure.

If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

Well, I guess I'll go all out with this list ...

Awesome Music; for the field, battle, scenes, everything.

Well-Made Battle System; One challenging but not hard to pick up.

AWESOME AMAZING Story; One that is great form beginning to end.

Sidequests; Some that are funny, and some that relate to the story.

A Good Ending; One that doesnt dissapoint yet also makes you think.

A second Playthrough option; This is where you get the other endings.

Weapons; Unique weapons that make each oen special, and Ultiamte Weapons.

Characters; These MUST be interesting.

Turmoil, Death; Characters dying give depth to the game, doesnt have
to be playable characters dying though - just those close to the party.
But at the same time, dont just kill off everyone. It has to be a single
death that impacts the entire game ( Like, Aerith in FFVII )

Graphics; Make them bring the world to life.

Controls; Like the battle system, simple yet not too simple.

I agree with was say here. I think the story is the most important thing. Then the graphics and the way you play give more positive points to the game.
I've played rpg's before and someone ones weren't bad because the story =/

For me it's about 70% Story/Characters, 25% Battle System (Turn based for me, I don't like most real time action systems) and 5% everything else.

Story and characters are the biggest factor for me. If a game has a good story and likable characters I can connect with then that's enough to pull me through any bad game play.

A good story will do, provided that it has enough twists to hook the player. But personally, I don't think even that is enough. A good amount of side quests that lead to other stories will bring out the best in the game. A good story will have its ups and downs depending on what the gamers want.

We have a lot of battle systems, so much that creating a new one feels somewhat impossible. So a used system with something else added to it. Something that we have seen before.

Music is a good touch, but it really just for audiophiles. Out of all the people that have played Oblivion and talked about it. I don't think I've ever heard ANYONE talk about the music. Same thing almost goes for almost every non-rhythm game out there.

Ending is crucial. If you want your players to come back to kiss your feet, then you want to leave them with a lasting impression in their heads. Different endings and other modes of play, like a New Game+, can also help.

Your characters must be interesting. I said that a good story will do, but if that story involves boring characters, then the stories will be boring. Tell us their weaknesses, their troubles, and their past. Characters will die, so show us what happened and what they said.

In my opinion, graphics are the least important detail. Let's look at it this way, you have two cakes: one in perfect condition, and one with a fist imprint in the middle. Both taste exactly the same, so it doesn't matter which one you eat. Same thing goes with graphics of games. They will of course win many people over. But there will soon be a time where good graphics will become a normal thing in all games, so we might as well start now.

Controls are important. Think about how you want you game played, and shape your controls around that. Ask games for their opinions at how the games should be played.

And finally, the KISS principle. It works for finances, investing, relationships (usually), so it should work for RPGs too. KISS stands for "Keep It Simple Stupid". Don't over complicate thing. Let's say you're in battle monsters that you can't escape from, but you don't really care who attacks which. So add an "Everyone attack button", like what Suikoden Tierkreis did.

That's all I have to say. I'm going to make games too, so that was my say in this matter.

Depends on what you're in need of.
And if you need coding, depends on what language you're planning about using.

Gameplay and Storyline

And 108 recruitable characters! And a bunch of secret characters you can get. Like in suikoden you can get jowey in suikoen III and the main hero in Suikoden II from suikoden I lol.
