What language are these songs in?
Link | by 遥かレイ on 2005-06-09 07:46:09 (edited 2005-06-09 07:51:13)
Does anyone know what language songs by Yoko Kanno such as Cyber Bird, Cats on Mars, Green Bird are sung in?
I've heard songs by her that are in Japanese, English, Russian, French, Italian etc but I can't figure out what language these songs are in.
They sound like they're in a European language to me.
On animelyrics.com they are just described as "a language Yoko Kanno uses in a lot of her songs"

pretty much lots of yoko kanno's songs are in a mde up language. she made it up so that's why its usually hard to find correct lyrics for those songs.

it's a type of jazz that you make sounds and yeah...it sounds good...if you listen to lots of jazz...you can see that yoko kanno's songs are that type of jazz

you dont have to understand the song's lyrics, the mystery in what the song is saying is enough for me to become a fan of her. anyways i'd always wondered on how she came up with those lyrics.

I guess inspiration is the key...

Why, sometimes I made up some languages too when I feel like it :D

They're not in any specific language; as has been said, she makes up the words to fit the mood of the song or series, though it's not really scat (the "jazz" style referred to) as her style doesn't fit it. Also, the words she invents are more complex, almost structured, than scat.

The words individually don't really mean anything, though on some songs like Sora from Escaflowne a "translation" was provided.

If you're happy and you know it, damn you.

Hmm... I always thougnt those songs were in an invented languages but I wasn't sure. For example, some parts of "Cats on Mars" sound like French ( "an danse an danse"...there are also words with nasalized vowels and everything) and the chorale part of "Blue" sounded like German to me. This is what I get for not speaking French or German ><;

mike s 6's Gabriela Robin site was really interesting ^.^ I searched around online and it's one of the only sites with decent information on her.

As been said, it is a made up language, but if I can remember correctly, a majority of it was based on Latin.

Well you know that actually makes sense. I was confused at first because I think someone put up lyrics for her songs and they didn't match.

You know, I speak french and I don't understand this song ^^. I've read the lyrics on animelyrics.com, and it's not a "normal" language.

That's actually a cool talent to create languages like that. she must really sing/write what she's feeling.
