Sports Shoujo Anime

Well... i've seen several sports anime: Aoki Densetsu Shoot(football), Hungry Heart(football), Prince of Tennis(tennis), Hikaru no Go(go). However, all of them have male protagonists and most skilled players are men. Usually either women's sports club is weak(Hungry Heart, Prince of Tennis) or there is no club at all. There was only one strong female player: in Hikaru no Go, but she wasn't the protagonist or anything and not much attention was given to her. So, well, here's the question: is there any sports anime(hopefully good) with female protagonist. And something younger than 1996 year(cuz yeah, there are such things as Attack No. 1(1969) or Ace wo Nerae(1973), but... i'm not sure if i can withstand it :D). Oh yeah, i know about Battle Athletes. |

Well I think Princess Nine was really good and my favorite female sport anime to date. It was made around 1998ish but the animation doesn't look old so don't let the year discourage you. There is also Shion no Ou which is like the female version of Hikari no go accept they play shougi (japanese chess) instead of Go. I only watched the first few episodes but it has a very good story. Lastly, although it looks like mainly fanservice, Air Master, is one of the newest female sport Anime. ![]() |

I've seen Airmaster already. It's not a sport, it's a streetfighting. And despite the anime being new one, the drawing style is... well, i'd say about 1980... The only attractive female character there is Kai. Well, the anime's good though, very good. As for Princess Nine and Shion no Ou, thanks for the names - i'll check them out later. |

Cross Game does have a main male protagonist, but it's the girls who get recognition first. Tsukishima Aoba is very kickass, and everybody knows it. Hell, the main male protagonist is inspired by her to become the baseball star he is today. Katsu is by the same author (hasn't been made into an anime yet), and Mizutani Katsuki is a very strong female protagonist. Cute girl, boxing extraordinare, with a lifetime of experience. Never mind that she is eventually eclipsed by the main male character; she's still the driving force in the background. |

Thanks. For some reason male protagonist seems like a basic for sports. I wonder if there's any Tournament sport anime (Regional->Kanto->National) with a female club. As all i found were: F-Zero and Initial D... i'm not sure about protagonists, but i think there ARE strong female characters... except for they are both racings. Btw, is there an anime about a horseback riding? Something like cavalry racing :) |
