Covers of Songs with Lowered Pitch?

So, I had a question for all you Gendouians. Does it bother you when people cover a song in a different key than the original song? If it does, why does this bother you? Are there some songs it is ok to cover in a different key and others that you think it is not okay to cover in a different key? I'm planning on attempting to cover Diva, but because I am a first alto and not a first soprano like Elin Carlson, the amazing original singer, I was considering lowering the pitch by a little bit. Would people still be interested in hearing the cover if I had to cover it in the lower key so as not to break my voice and the general populus' ear drums? Have you ever covered something in a different key than the original piece so that it better fit your voice? If so, what song was it, and what was the reason that made you choose to do so? Could you not hit all of the notes in the original? Did your voice sound much richer in the key that you were singing it in? Was the song originally for the opposite gender and simply singing it an octave above or below the original key not an option? |

Hi SS :) I'm not bother by people covering a song lower or higher than the original key at all. I feel it's ok to lower the pitch of a song to better accommodate the capabilities of your voice. It really shouldn't take away from the song by doing so (unless you play your recording with the original at the same time, then it'd be pretty weird heh). Your voice would also appreciate it by not forcing it to go where it can't quite reach yet. You'd definitely be more comfortable with the song. I've been playing around with the pitch of This Love by Angela Aki to try and find a comfortable range for me. I just can't hit those gosh forsaken high notes with the original key gah!!! I'd just hurt my voice if I would to force myself to hit those notes. |
