Link | by on 2009-08-02 09:02:31
Hello, everyone!!

I'll have a trip to Japan in October for two weeks and still havn't plan anything yet.
I think my landing would be in Tokyo and after that... I don't know what to do.... maybe catch a train to somewhere...

So can you please tell me...
- Somewhere interesting to go? Just anywhere.
- Something fun to do?
- Special occations/festivals in October?
- Popular meals and popular restuarant?
- (Important) places to buy anime stuff?(Let's turn it into Otaku Trip) =D
- Basic phrases for shopping? (for my mom)
- Any other information?

Thank you!!! Arigatou!!! (<-- Did I spell it right?)

In my opinion the most important, and only thing you shouldn't forget is
you need to bring enough money. Things in japan especially main attraction are expensive.
A map, and someone(it'll be nice if that person is fluent in both english and japanese, and of course know places in japan well.)
that will help you tour the city/place you want to go.

Ohai. I HAZ RETURN AS OF 18-APR-2020!

@Miko

I dont really worry about enough money since my parents'll go there with me.. =D
(If I go there myself? I'll just stay in a hotel...)

About someone there, I think my dad will call a attache of my country there or something. He seems reliable... but I'm quite sure he don't know something or somewhere cool for me.

T^T so I ask you guys instead

However, thanks for the reply!! =D

Oh lucky you, I'll probably be starting college around October, lol. :D
You're lucky to go now, and with your parents. I hopefully will go in a few years, though doubt my parents will be there with me.

There seems to be a ton of fun things you can do on your first visit to Japan.
Also if you're going to Tokyo, there's especially going to be a lot of events going on.
I've only seen visits to Tokyo (visually) on the Travel channel,
but what seems interesting to check out is the street food during the night time.

Miko's right. Tokyo is a very expensive place overall, so make sure to bring enough and spend wisely.
Personally, if you don't have a pen pal or a friend over there who can help and meet up with you,
I'd do some personal research just to get an idea of where to go, what to buy, etc.

lol, everybody wants to check out actual anime in Japan. Hope you find a great place. ^_~`

One major thing is bring a digital camera and take tons of pics!
You still have about three months, so you're in no rush. :D

I have some suggestions. I've been to Japan a lot and my sister's going back today.

1) Shrines and Temples. You may visit Tokyo Tower, Sunshine City, Ueno Park and go to Kabuki Theatre to watch a show.
2) There are a couple of theme parks to visit. Disneyland and La Qua. La Qua is near the Tokyo Dome.
3) Akihabara is the only place where you can buy anime and manga. BTW, the manga in there are very cheap.
4) Food- Udon, Soba, Okonomiyaki, Omelette Rice, Curry rice and Takoyaki.
5) Basic phrases? Do you mean 'How much is the camera' as example?
6) Other information- You may need to bring a Japanese phrase book or some Japanese phrase notes with you. Notice that there are some signs that have English.
7) Festivals? There's Dai Ginza Matsuri in Ginza & Ana-hachimangu Yabusame in Ana-Hachimangu shrine. Both of them are from Tokyo.
8) Probably you may visit Harajuku, Ginza, Tokyo Disneyland, Shibuya, Shinjuku & Akihabara.
9) One more thing. Bring a digital camera.

There are many places I've never heard them before from your reply. Thank you very much. They would be nice to know and need to know.
=D

Basic phrases. Yes, it is like "How much is it?", "Is it bargainable?", "Can you lower the price?" and so on...

About festival. Dai Ginza and Ana-hachimangu Yabusame. What are thay about? Food? Dance? Books?
Please explain a bit more.

Thanks a lot!!

You are welcome^^.

Ana Hachimangu festival-Demonstrations of yabusame, the ancient Japanese art of horseback archery. 2-3 blocks from Waseda Station on the Tozai Line. The festival starts at 10th October.

Dan-Ginza festival-Held every since 1968, the 100-year anniversary of the Meiji Restoration. Parades, bazaars and bands fill the streets with colour and music but the main attraction has to be the bargain sales held by the major name stores in the district. This festival starts from 10th October to 17th October.

You are going there 2 weeks in Japan. These 2 festivals are worth going. If you like more about the festivals, there are some tour guides in Tokyo or print out tour guides on websites.

When I was in Japan, I went to a festival in Fukuoka (Fukuoka is in Kyushu). I didn't wear my Yukata there, but I look at the fireworks. Mostly I watched it on the television.

Well then... Dan-Ginza seems interesting to me!! XD
Um.. I have to plan my trip to stay in Tokyo that week.
XD

Fest in Fukuoka? Is it in October? I guess not?(Fall fireworks do exist?)
If it is in Oct, I'll buy Shinkanzen(spelling?) ticket for it..

Thank you again!!

Actually the festival in Fukuoka is in the summer between July & August. If you're planning to go to other cities other than Tokyo, buy the Japan Rail Pass. Since you're planning to stay in Tokyo for one week, I suggest you buy a 1 week pass for yourself & your family. How many people are going to Japan with you?

There are 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks JRP. You can buy it by internet or by phone. You have 2 types of Japan Rail Pass and there are Ordinary pass and Green Pass. The ordinary pass is the economy class and the green pass is the first class. I don't know how much it costs in your country. In the UK, one week costs under £190 for ordinary pass and the green pass costs about £250 for one week. Hope this helps.

@ animestar19

I have a group of 4 - my parents, my bro and me.

We're still deciding on which other city will we go. I think we'll go to whether Osaka or Fukuoka since they're the only famous city always mentioned in TVChampion.
(- -')

Well, seems like I have to tell my parents about this JRP... and its costs too!!
That one week pass sounds good to me.

That helps a lot!!
Thanks again

Oh I see. Is this your first time in Japan? And you're welcome. If you have decided the cities that you're planning to go, let me know.

Japan Rail Pass: When you arrived at Japan, you need to go to a JRP counter and transfer from an exchange form to a normal Japan Rail Pass. All you need is your exchange form & your passport. Next you need to fill in a form with your passport. Oh there's something I forgot to tell you. You can go on any Shinkansen except for Nozomi trains. Nozomi are the trains that goes from Tokyo to Fukuoka. If you're planning to go to that train, you need to buy a ticket spearately.

No, it's not my first time. But it IS like the first time 'cause my last trip was err.. when I was 5 years old... ummm 13 years ago and was 4-day long.
(- -')

Thanks again for the information about JRP and Nozomi trains.

I'll tell you my destination city as soon as possible.

Oh I see. When you first went to Japan, did you remember much when you were there?

I've also been to Japan. The first time was with my family, second time was with my 2nd elder sister, third, fourth & fifth time, I went on my own. The 3rd time I went to Japan, I've started learning Japanese. At first, it was difficult, now it's a little easy.

Nope. I can't rewind that time much.
I remember just how to say Mcdonald "Ma ca do na rou do" 'cause it's funny.
=D

Actually, I ask my family the same question the time I know we're going to Japan.
And I dont know why, the room just suddenly become silent...
(T^T)

You travel on your own? (0.o) Wow!

Yeah, I travelled alone a lot. I travelled to Japan, Malaysia & Singapore. For the first 2 years of travelling alone, I had an assitance. In the UK, students or children who are under 18 and over 6, must have an assitance. Last year, I'm allow to travel without one. However, over 18 can request for an assitance.

Imagine you're in an airport and you're travelling alone to Malaysia for the first time. How would you feel?

By the way, the Japanese pronounced 'Ma ku do na ru do' or in Katakana, 'マクドナルド'. And I also thought that pronounciation is a little funny, but it's also easy to say.

Very big Thanks.

Oh I see. You're planning to go to London soon? And yeah, I'm from the UK. Also I'm a Londoner. I might see you there when I'm there. In Central London, there's the London Eye, London Bridge, Trocadero, Trafalgar Square, London Dungeon, Buckingham Palace & O2 Arena as examples. In North West London, there's Wembley Stadium and Wembley Arena. There are a lot of attractions in London especially London Central.

And your parents want to know about Fukuoka. When I was in Japan, normally I stay at my dad's flat there. I can only think of Fukuoka Tower, Fukuoka Dome, Solaria shopping centre & Mariona City. Mariona City has 2 Ferris Wheels, Fukuoka Tower is quite a high tower and Fukuoka Dome is a place where Fukuoka Softbank Hawks came there to practise Baseball. You might need a bus or a taxi there. One thing, Fukuoka's popular with shopping centres/shopping malls. Another thing is the signs especially the train names have English writing in it. It's a lot easier to follow.
