A survey..

So like. I'm conducting my own research, did users at this site read the rules & regulations before doing anything at this site.. (e.g. registering, posting forums, chat, etc.) Cause I found out there are many users (I usually at chat) that are not following the rules. And get banned and so on. Also, I posted a poll about those, to see how many people did read the R&R before doing anything. I hope users give some feedbacks about this. Discussion is welcomed too. Anyways, thank you for the cooperation. Side note : This is just a survey of my own and it is on my own will to do this. It has nothing to do with any other stuff and so on. |

I always wondered that as well. The recent newbies doesn't seem to read the rules of the forums nor the chat before jumping in them, and end up getting in trouble. I find it just plain sad. |

It's a shame as some jumped into chat and make ruckus few minutes later and get banned. It totally gives some bad image to some people of this site. This won't happened if they did read the R&R before starting any act on gendou.com. |

All the n00bs flock to the chatroom anyways, which is why I never bother going in there. About your research, I don't remember or not, then again it's been like five years almost now. I'm an alumni. ^_^ ------- |

@da I was figured newbies are one of the reason you're didn't at chat since I spent my time spent at this site for almost 2 years.. Speaking of alumni, I never noticed that you're one of them after... Few months ago, I think... |

I've never been into the chat, might have entered accidentally a few times but usually just navigate back to where I was. I used to use chats (for a different forum) but like DA said, for some reason, n00bs flock in there like ants to cakes in matter of seconds and start spamming and flaming instead of chatting. I stopped going to chats after that, and since then, in my hea,d the equation "chats=newbs" stays in there. As for PHS' polls I have to admit, I don't read the R&R before I joined, though whenever I need to do something and think it might be against it, I'll refer to it before doing anything. |

@kay I'm glad that you're admitting that, and that happened to me too. I never read R&R when I was registering this site. Looking back, I'm quite a lucky person who didn't ended up being banned and being nice to every users. But still, not all newbies are total annoyance at chat. But the main point, they just want to be noticed, but not the way we could accept, that's all. |
Re: A survey..

roflmao I didn't bother to read the R&R until I received a short ban for double-posting and being generally annoying I was in junior high at that time... five years ago? If you can find my older posts in the forums from around 4-5 years ago, you would laugh at how totally n00b-ish I was (well I myself laughed lmao) regarding n00bs in chat, idk, I'm not used to ircs so I've never entered the chat before. Our problem here (aside of reading the R&R beforehand) might have something to do with the age range of active gendou users, which I believe lies between 17 to 23++ years old (some of you are in your 30s). And the fact that Gendou himself had set up a "professional" forum culture suitable for that age range (eg: mature thinking and philosophical discussions), unlike many other anime/manga forums that I'd know of On the other hand, most of them anime/manga enthusiasts out there are mostly 12-17 year-olds (-sorry-) immature kids, which WILL most likely act like a total n00b if they are to participate here. But to be honest, I don't see any problems regarding n00bs nowadays, in the forums..... Idk about chat though... Well, at least things are not as bad as 2005-2007 banning spree... Kay and DA might still remember about that

I bet many happened before I registered at 2009. And most are not a meant to remember anymore. Oh well, history is history. Like H said before, most anime/manga enthusiasts are aged from below 12 till over 17. And yes, most are immature (no offence, please) since most might only know how to surf the internet but not how to clean your desktop. And yes, I haven't seen much happenings at forums these days. I'm guessing the forum mods did their great work to keep forum safe. Congratulations for that, keep up the work. On the side note, I've seen some positive response on the polls. I would like to thanks for the poll. Those help is appreciated. |

I did read all of the Rules and Regulations when I first came here, for all of the sections (even though I only download songs every so often). I have a rather healthy fear of getting banned from this place. I have no comment on the noobs in chat thing. I don't usually go in the chat, I prefer the forum because I can carry on a full discussion without having text flying by as I'm reading or typing. |

I'm pretty sure I read through some of the rules when I came here, but probably not all of them. I think the ones I read through basically summed up what's good and what's not, so from there on I just used my best judgment when posting and I tried to be polite to everyone. I'm still here so it's worked out well (Wait, I got the best new member of the year award last year, it had to work out well XD). And I agree with DA, I hardly went to chat in the past because most of the time a lot of newbies are there (That and chat doesn't like to agree with my connection sometimes XD). I'm trying to go to chat more now, but still it's annoying when it's just a bunch of newbies there. As for what H said, I think maturity level is more of a concern than age. I'm fairly young (When compared to most other users here I'm young), and I think age really doesn't matter as long as you behave well. If you act n00b-ish, you will be treated like a n00b. If you act more mature, you will be treated with more respect. It's like that everywhere, age isn't much of a concern as long as you know how to behave. If you respect others, you will be respected as well. I'm not saying you have to always agree with everything someone says, you can disagree as long as you do it in a polite and respectful manner. |

I agree. Most new users at chat are being n00b-ish just because they're new or trying to get attention. Perhaps the introduction section might give some first impressions for some new users who posted their introduction. Like Toyumi said, people will respect more if users act matured. This will lessen bans. |

I don't think I read the rules when I first registered, since my first motive was to come here just for music. But as I entered chat, i wasn't the noob type, I had been to chats before, I knew what not to say and what to say. There were only a few noob things I asked--how to do emotes, how to get an avatar--after that i was pretty accustomed to things. Eventually, I did did read all the rules and when I migrated to forums I read the rules there too. And PHS, you seem to be talking about noobs getting banned from chat. That is most definitely not the case. usually, a noob is smart enough to listen to warnings, and if the don't listen to warnings, the point will get across with a boot. The only bans are if people seriously need to stop causing drama, or stop trolling hard. In fact, i don't really think there are any more than 4 noob bans in an entire year; there could be less. |

[@PHS] Hahaha, yeah that's why my appearances in the chatroom are usually "rare". But I just never enjoyed the fact how there's like a million people cross chatting together, like you don't know what's going on. Plus I just can't stand the majority of the people in there, cause yeah they're n00bs. Not gonna rant about the chatroom though, cause everyone knows I prefer the forums over the chatroom... the very dead and quiet forums... XD And yeah, the alumni crew I started a while ago. Still need to give out more of them for qualifying members. I was also eventually going to start another club, but seeing as how the activities of the forums are down, club might be dead before it's created. ------- |

Interesting topic. I'm a semi-veteran user for both the chatroom and the forums. I've noticed that a major difference between the two would be the formality. Since the forums has a sort of prerequisite before posting such to make sure that a post made by a user have some sense into it, noobs are seen flocking into the chatroom. However, what intrigues me isn't those typical newbies who are not accustomed to the rules. It's the drama the users bring in to chat. I do find those soap operas amusing and hilarious to watch behind my screen here however, it starts to get stupid and childish after a while when the same old turd starts to repeat a tedious cycle with more users bringing in their "sad stories" to chat. We also have tons of wannabes and posers there. Trolls are a-okay to me as long as they don't step over the boundaries of faking out a scenario as if it's really happening. I also do not condone tantrum-throwing in the chatroom (even though some moderators occasionally do this). It also starts to get annoying when users started sharing their personal problems which are emotionally stirring. I mean, this is a chatroom in an Anime website NOT a Crisis Chatline. Despite me ranting about chat, I still do hang there frequently mainly because of a few cool people I met there. |

Personally, not many users read the rules. And thus it's their fault for breaking them without noticing what went on. But the rules, are honestly not that different from many sites that require interactions with people. It's all about common sense and respect. Regarding, The Chat Room & The word "Noob". The word "noob" i think its being misinterpreted, A noob is just a new user who is learning about the site and its interactions. Now with that said, every user who is new on gendou.com is obviously new.. thus the term "noob" is used. Without "noobs" the site will not grow and if the site doesn't grow..the site will die. A person who doesn't follow the rules or just plainly lacks the ability to properly interact with other users, is not a "Noob" but just a disrespectful or just plain annoying user. And that's where the moderators, like myself do our best to address the situation. I'm not a frequent forum user, Although i got my start in the chat room. I honestly do not think their is much of a difference between the forums and the chat room. What do i mean? Well..There's no major difference as what feature you use on gendou.com if your a forum user or just a chat user, you still get the same people and experiences. In the forums each topic has its own thread. And in the chat room it depends on the time of day and the users who are at that time of the conversation taking place. It's all depending on your personal preference, but just saying you don't like chat because of "noobs"..is just not right, since some "noobs" are actually very cool people. |

When I got here I read the rules because this was the first forum that I wanted to stay at. The community here is different from other forums. if you asked me back then if would be here for 3 years I would have probably told you no, but this is the one site I visit the most. When I became a moderator here i read the rules again to make sure I knew how to enforce them. Chat is cool most of the time but it isn't a good as when I first got here. Lots of things have changed inchat and here in the forums. hopefully we can see some growth in gendou |

What rules. Its just like hotmail or gmail. We're not going to read the full 7 pages of terms of condition/rules. We are just going to arbitarily press "accept", even if something is hidden in fine print "you will recieve a maximum of 600 emails per month from our sponsors and there is nothing you can do about it". If we do like it (our stay at the site), and get a warning, we will come around to view the rules. Eventually, abiding to it. Or of couse we could ignore it and face the ban hammer (then eventually changing our ip's and comming back to the site, and getting banned again). Then again, I bet 80% of us (i mean the population of gendou) here haven't even seen what the rules page looks like. @wolf. Oh god. please bring your 4chan talk to 4chan and not here. |

I read the rules just for that reason there hello. The rules weren't 7 pages long and they were short and bulleted |
