Best summer reading books? Bored outta my mind...
Link | by Homunculus on 2005-06-23 08:52:55 (edited 2005-06-24 08:13:59)
Hey. Just wanted your take on the best summer reading books you think are cool. My parents are getting on my case about all the time I spend on the computer, and never waste an opportunity to tell me that I could be doing something more stimulating to my mind-- i.e., read a flippin' book.
Don't get me wrong-- I love reading and I love books. But... the internet's just so much more ADDICTIVE, ya know?
Any suggestions? (Any that won't send me into deepsleep?)

Well hey, wait a little while to get the 6th Harry Potter book. Otherwise theres also the Series of Unfortunate Events (if you're into kid books, but they're not that bad really). Other than that... go spend some time in a bookstore or library to broaden your search. Uh... there are also classic books that are lengthy like Dracula and The Invisible Man. Hope this helps.

If you're looking for a long read that presents some really awesome characters and the greatest philosophy ever, read The Fountainhead. If you're not looking for something as intellectual or time consuming, you can always go for the Artemis Fowl series or the Redwall series.

I would help us if you told us what you like to watch/read. For me I like romance/horror. B/c plain romance is normally to mushy & horror as in scream is not me. But if you love Nightworld stuff try Ann Rice books she does horror(some a little homo). & my other fav of nightworld is Christine Feehan she does romance. But thats just my fav for nightworld books; but if you give me some idea on what your into I'll love to help w/finding you an aurther up your alle.

Oh - alrighty, this helps! ^ ^ Thanks, you guys!
In answer to your question though (sorry I wasn't clearer) I just wanted to try something new, it didn't matter the genre. I actually more wanted to know what YOU thought was tight. Usually, 'fore I put off reading for a while, I just sorta... well, read anything I could get my hands on. I've never heard of some'a these titles before, though - I'll try to give 'em a shot, thanx. =^__^=

summer reading -_- I suppose my teachers think East of Eden is fun - heheh. I'ts actually a really good book...just 600+ pages too long...hmm if you don't want to do too much thinking (and or sleeping) I'd suggest funny books - like Everything is Illuminated by Jonathan Safran Foer..and his second book I'll remember the name later and I'll tell you. It's not sciece fiction or anything but this guy is funny. I met him one time for my Creative Writing class - he's from New York. I'd suggest his books for anyone who wants to have a good laugh...Oh and also David Sedaris :D who is another hilarious writer.

Im on book seven of the "Wheel of Time" series. Its a pretty sweet fantasy series if your into it. Another greta series is by my fav fantasy author Mercedes Lackey. Its called the "Heralds of Valdemar". Its my fav set of books ever. They all intertwine but their about different people. Uber sweet. AnyHways thats what i like.

I'd say books by Terry Pratchett if you're in to satiric fantasy comedy.

Well, if you like fantasy and a good dose of politics, go for The Belgariad and Malloreon series by David and Leigh Eddings, they're really good. The Sword of Truth series are also a good pick.

As for me, I'm reading Dan Brown's works (The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons)... great fun arguing with a book, the book always loses. ^____^

The best one ever has to be CATCHER IN THE RYE! I loved that book, but usually it's a hit or miss with people.

The stuff on my school summer reading list arent all that bad...Where the Neart is, Maus, Izzy Willy Nilly...the only one I actually hate is Survival: The Story of the Andes survivers. ugh, so depressing. Maus is actually a graphic novel...wonder why it's on the ScHOOL mandated list. Now...when are they gonna start putting manga on?

If you wanna be busy the whole summer, read the Tale of Genji translated by Edward Siedensticker which was originally written by Murasaki Shikibu around 1000 (the Heian period). I tried reading it in classical Japanese and I couldn't get passed the first paragraph.
