games with sad endings...
Link | by mccorp on 2011-02-06 23:41:21
I played some games that have pretty sad endings (not because it was lame, but because it was tear-dropping sad). here are some:
1. final fantasy VII-crisis core, I actually started crying when I watched the ending
2. chrono cross, something about it makes me depressed...

what are endings that made you sad?

So far only Crisis Core for me.I mean, those who didn't cry at the end are heartless people.

For me, there are only two that I can remember, Sonic Adventure 2 and Klonoa. Yes, I know they're both sort of "childish" games, but regardless they both had sad endings in my opinion.

.hack//G.U. Vol. 2 Reminiscence was a sad game all together, but the end was still pretty sad, as well as the next and last installment, Vol. 3 Redemption. They both ended on "the world is saved, yay!" notes, but just that the characters' friends and mentors died saving the world. Granted, some who had been "killed" came back, but at the moment, it was extremely sad, such as Alkaid's death. And now that I think about it, every .hack//G.U. installment had such sad endings. They were all cliffhangers too, which drew me into the franchise anymore.

And like previously stated in above posts, Crisis Core definitely had one of the saddest endings in existence.

The second play through of Nier makes that entire game pretty sad in reflection.

"I don't have any opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything." -Seymour Skinner

Persona 3 - The ending was kind of spoiled for me before I beat the game, which actually lead to me not beating it on the PS2. I didn't actually beat the game until I got Persona 3 Portable and was able to bring myself to get through the end. It wouldn't really seem like a sad ending if it weren't for the extra story they added in to Persona 3 FES. I should stop talking about this now before I spoil anything. >.>

Wild Arms 4 - Spoilers

Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core - I already saw that ending sequence from the original game, but man, the CG cutscene in Crisis Core makes it so much worse. I'll be honest, I was really choked up while watching that.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Despite the fact that the ending took like 40 minutes of cutscenes and answered pretty much every question left out there in the Metal Gear series, I was still pretty sad by the time it was all over.

I can't think of any big ones other than that. A lot of games with sad endings I can think of usually end on a bright or upbeat note. I'm not a fan of games with sad endings. Even though they are usually full of clichés and such, I like the lovey-dovey or happy endings.

Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma.

I think Time Hollow counts? ...It takes a bit of thinking to figure out, but Derek Kairos's story doesn't end well. His alternate future self ends up living happily, while the original Derek just blinks out of existence at the end of the game. ._.

Really late reply to this, but:

First of all, BIG SPOILERS FOR THE GAME TIME HOLLOW. For anyone who hasn't played this DS game from like 2008 but still plans to.

@beldarius - I guess you could look at it that way, but I don't think it really makes it a sad ending overall. Now, it's been a looooooong time since I finished the game, but I don't think original Derek blinks out of existence. Of course, from what I remember, you may consider the alternative to be just as tragic. Derek going through the portal to save past Kori so that his younger self can end up living happily ever after with her. The whole reason things turn out that way is because Derek wants to (essentially) give himself the life he never had. I mean, it's sad for the original since he's not technically the one that gets to experience it (this games Time Travel mechanics means he essentially became a separate person), but his reasons for doing it makes it kind of heartwarming in my opinion.

Now where it gets sorta tragic is when you take into the account that I'm pretty sure original Derek is basically frozen in time from that point on. Again, it's been a long time since finishing this game, but I don't remember original Derek coming back through the portal after saving Kori. From what I recall, when that happens the person ceases to age. This means that original Derek is deathless and will end up watching himself live out the entire life he never got and beyond. I could be wrong though, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't blink out of existence.

Actually, I think people from Time Hollow that get stuck in the past end up wiped out.

Kori was pulled to the future through the portal which meant she was frozen in time, unable to age; however, Derek goes into the past while having a point of entry in the future - once he reaches that point again in around 20 years, he'll cease to exist. ...This explains it a little better. http://beldarius.deviantart.com/art/Time-Hollow-explanation-for-in-game-time-travel-320134022

...This is the reason why I always figured the original Derek has a bittersweet ending.

@beldarius - Wow, this is an old thread/discussion.

You raise a good point that I hadn't thought of. I didn't really think about the whole paradox angle. The only issue with that point is that Time Hollow's version of time travel is more like reality swapping from what I remember. Your explanation makes sense in a singular timeline sense, but didn't Time Hollow explain that the Hollow Pen doesn't so much let someone travel through time, rather that it allows someone to swap out worlds or realities?

Anyway, it's been too long since playing this game, so I can't really discuss the plot as well as I used to be able to. The game is something like 8 years old at this point. It's been pretty much that long since I played it since I bought it at release.

If we go with your explanation though, then I actually think that would be a little less sad/tragic than mine. I mean, it's still kind of a bummer ending, but at the very least Derek would cease to exist rather than be an immortal being who has to watch everyone else die around him until the end of the world. I won't link to TVTropes, but he would be in a 'Who Wants to Live Forever?' situation. So in a way, your explanation is actually a little less tragic. No matter what, the ending was still bittersweet though, there's no getting around that.

Anyway, I think I have two more games to add to this. I believe I played these in the two years since my last post.

Lost Planet 3 - I don't have much to say about it. The game ended exactly the way it was set up to from the start, but it was still a downer. I don't want to say much more than that because even though the game isn't that old, it wasn't hugely popular, so there's still a chance people will go check it out. Lost Planet had a weird run, but the third game I think managed to nail down the story/characters department.

The Guided Fate Paradox/The Awakened Fate Ultimatum - I mean it ended on a happy note. The main characters lived, their girlfriend(s) lived (depending on your ending of course), bad guys got defeated. I guess the sad part though is when you think about what was accomplished, which is to say really nothing at all. At best, in both games, the main character took out what was essentially a regional commander/threat. In the end the Angel/Demon war is still going on, the Angels are only in a slightly less hopeless situation than they were before, and the Angels are probably going to keep getting humans to take on the role of God and go fight to the death in their war.
