Best Overall Music Software

Okay we all here have heard covers of songs of all variety here on Gendou.com.
Many people are of course familiar with common programs such as Audacity and a few Mac users know of the free Garageband.

I plan on releasing an unknown-release date EP by next year and I'm praying I can get into college this Fall for that to happen.
I have Garageband (and I think Soundbooth from Adobe) but as far as professional, it's not the best program to use.
I know of Pro Tools which my one friend told me about recently which caught my eye,
and I know of others too, but what do you guys personally use?
If you use Audacity or something like that, I don't mind you posting,
but I want to know the best programs to use (cause I'm gonna try to rip 'em online XD).

Now I know the better programs are gonna be harder to learn (from the start at least),
so in general the better programs that are easier/faster to learn.
Although Garageband is fairly easy to learn, I think it's limited and has a few random flaws (it's free I guess).

I saw some tutorials for Pro Tools and my one friend uses Logic.
I'm hoping to get some real detailed feedback on anything they use which can help me.

Also, not sure if I'll make it an official thread, but do you guys have advice on mics?
Like professional ones, and maybe some extra gear like stands or those noise things you put in front of it.
FA told me mics on average don't cost a lot (100 isn't so bad to be out there),
I'm not looking to invest in a crazy pimping Mic to brag about,
something that is good for basically recording your own music or covers which sound really professional and clean.
I don't mind a stand since I'd record right in front of my Mac anyways, but it'd be nice.

And since I merged my savings account to my checking, I'm very tempted to buy those Dre headphones.

Thanks for taking the time to read and help me out. I'd really appreciate all the replies!

PS. BOMS. :)
