Strategy Guides : Do you use them?
Link | by stash on 2011-05-17 06:15:15
Like the title says. Do you use strategy guides at all for the games that you buy?

I never use them for the first playthrough it takes the fun out of it, but the advantage is that you find everything (weapons, items and side-quests)

It depends if I'm stuck at some point in the game, then I'll use a strategy guide for it to get some help. I try not to use them on the first try of completing a game unless I'm really stuck at a certain point in the game that's needed to continue, but if I replay a game then I like to use one to get anything that I missed the first time through.

It depends on different situations. lol try finding your way out of a Team Rocket cave in Pokemon without a guide or someone who can use light. XD

For collectable trophies though, definitely a guide, you can't find everything in a game without one.

I use'em for most RPG games, moreso just to have them if the need arises. I do all
kinds of extra stuff and discover things on my own in RPG games, but having a
walkthrough there incase I need it or want to check if I got everything is great.

I own the published guides for Star Ocean 3, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and XII
[Collectors Edition] and Kingdom Hearts II, Birth by Sleep, and 358/2 Days. However
these are mainly just to have to my collection. Like the FF12, KHII, and KH BBS
guides were bought the day the games came out.

For other games, Gamefaqs is a home away from home. I'd also love to write one someday.

As Shuy said I use them for mostly rpg's I of course try my hand at a complete run through without help. If that works then I go back with a guide and tie up loose ends.

The first game to ever stop my complete run through was Final Fantasy XIII >_> I made it all the way to barthedus then got stuck xD so I ragequit and played through again. This time successfully beating it :D.

As for strategy guides themselves they're a lot better to read than textbooks and homework >_> I honestly think any type of gamer from casual to hardcore could use one :D.

I still need to beat XIII. When I first got my PS3 I played through all the way to
the open area of 11, was getting owned, played through and beat Star Ocean 4 instead,
then went back and started a new game in XIII where I'm at the end of Chapter 9.

and I agree, I love reading through them. They are always well written and enjoyable.

I've only ever used them for RPG's to find all the treasure chests. I bought the FF X strategy guide after playing through the game a couple times and was amazed at how many chests I had missed. I usually don't need them for the strategy element as I'm a level grinding machine and bosses fall before my outrageously powerful characters. My favorite grind ever was in FF 12 when you first got to leave the city. I worked Vaan up beating wolves until he got all his quickenings then beat the dinosaur OVER 9000 times with quickening chains and was level 30 before I continued on with the story. All the other characters were equal or higher levels than me when I finally met up with them. I pwned all the n00bish bosses after that. Except for some of the espers, the no items/no magic/no metal auras that some of them had forced me to use some strategy.

I like finding out how I should level before hand though. Like if I want to use a certain weapon/armour later on I should level skill X, but that really only applies for REAL RPG's.

I mostly used them for some RPGs to find the hidden stuff I overlooked and and the level requirements for bosses, but that's mostly it. Graces is almost doing this, with the title requirements and all. /sigh

For the usual RPGs, I don't usually use guides. I spent countless hours just to have 100% complete games. But in some rare situations, a guide is needed...

For the H-RPGs (most are strategic games), with many routes to choose from and with wanting to finish every route, I use strategy guides in order to finish it fast because there are still many games waiting in my hard drive. But I play them first without the use of a guide. I use guides for the second playthrough...

I usually do my own for at least the first three tries of a game, after it I usually play with the guides only for collecting rare items or missable scenes. So I don't fret much on looking for one. Apparently, I use them at times when I do get stuck in the game which are rare occasions.

I do make some of the guides though, when no one else had made one.

Yeah IGN is a good source too for walkthroughs and stuff like gamefaqs.
I have one for the Sly Collection in case I forget some treasures or something, but so far for the first one I found everything.

Pfft, I'm not paying for that.

I never buy strategy guides, although I would like to have some for a few of my favorite games. The problem is that I almost never see a strategy guide for a game I love, simply because of where I live (and I guess since they are going out of style due to the rise in internet use). I could get them online, but it would cost quite a bit more than I am willing to pay. I would love to have a Valkyria Chronicles or Final Fantasy VII strat guide for example, but they would simply cost me too much and there are better collectibles that I could get using the money.

As for online guides, I only ever use them for RPG's, like most other people here. I only look to them to find certain items/quests with short windows of opportunity. A lot of the RPG's I've played recently have stupidly short windows of time to get a certain item or unlock a certain quest, and if you miss that window of opportunity, then you can never get it again unless you play through a second time.

Cross Edge is the best example I have at the moment, where in order to get a certain scene (and unlock a set of costumes/equipment) you have to enter a dungeon that leads to the next world map area, and immediately exit it. Then you need to go down and scan an area to get said scene. There is no indication that you have to do this, and getting through the 5 minute dungeon takes away your chance to ever get that scene. Cross Edge was filled with those kind of things. You had to constantly go back and rescan the entire world map every single time an event happened.

"True endings" are also something I may look to a strat guide for, since they also tend to have very precise requirements for unlocking with little to no hints on how to do it. Persona 4 is a good example, for those of you familiar with that game's True Ending. You usually have to back track and do random things in order to see the ending that was meant to be seen all along (which I think is a stupid concept). Optional endings or character specific endings are all fine, but a game shouldn't hold back the true ending from you just because you didn't go back to the starting village and talk to the old man at the docks three times before beating the third to last boss. >.> I'll stop rambling now.

Depends on the game. In Final Fantasy VII there is SO much side stuff to do one of them is really important to helping you beat the end boss, and that topic would be Chocobo breading so you can get a gold Chocobo and get a certain materia.

I use have them but don't use them for other games until I REALLY get stuck. Yeah I know I'm a horrible person...

Though I don't use them for fighting games, I don't see the point.

i try not to use guides for RPG games like Final Fantasy unless i want everything and complete it 100%.

Not for the first time playing a new game, yup, unless I got stuck in one place(Parasite Eve 2 for example;the PC password puzzle REALLY got me stuck for life XP).Guide books are hard to come by these days,so I read 'em online ;D

Strange. But, I use the guides after I finish the game. Its to check whether I've missed out any cool strange stuff in the game. Like, unlockable characters, challenges, and/or even rare items.
But usually, I play the game with so much carefulness (checking every nooks and crannys), that sometimes,
the guide is insufficient.
I know I'm being a little bit selfish for not writing a guide myself though. ;P

Not really, unless I get really stuck in a game and there is no one to help me or give me advice.
I would only really use them for RPGs like Final Fantasy, but my brother always tries to offer me help and give me advice if I ask when I play. (My brother usually plays the same games which I play).
I usually look around and check everywhere so I find most of the items (Hidden or not), so that rarely becomes a problem.

for RPGs, of course. not on 1st playthrough, nor the second, but usually my 3rd. lol. because i try to find them myself, i kinda hate it when i have to rely on guides. and usually after the playthrough which i use the guide, i'll attempt to speed finish. and i only look for them online since buying seems to be a waste...lol.
