For first timers, what are some pointers?
Link | by night_link on 2005-06-27 14:10:45 (edited 2005-06-27 14:10:55)
When people go to Japan for the first time, what are some pointers so that they dont offend anyone or get in trouble? For example, I know its considered rude to tip people in restaurants. And also, where is a nice country side in Japan? For people who want to enjoy the little time they have there, what are good places or events to go and do?

Nobody tips in Japan, it's just custom. What time of year are you going to visit Japan? There's different events depending on the time of year you visit. If you want some nice country-side, just wander away from the big cities and go towards the smaller prefectures without the big cities. I have a friend who visited Tochigi-Ken and said it was a nice place to get away from the bustle of Tokyo.

Thanks a lot rat. Actually I was planning some time ahead in the future to go to Japan, but I'm still not sure of when. Just wanted some opinions while the time crawls.

Dont blow your nose in public, thia is considered vulgar.

Dont take the first "no" to an offer seriously, its some weird tradition.

ALWAYS GET THE HONORIFFICS RIGHT, this is important. Everyone is -san unless you know them very well, remember.

Dont wash in the bathtubs, they're just for relaxing in.

Dont pass things with your chopsticks, dont cross your chopsticks, dont stick your chopsticks in your rice (unless your in the process of eatting it), Slurping is OK. Bow alot, farther = more respect. Doctors, teachers, and various other people are -sensei. other than that stick to san. It isnt rude to tip, they just dont. Take a shower then a bath, DON'T DRAIN THE BATH if you're not alone.
