Best of 2011
Link | by roxas678 on 2012-01-07 10:10:19 (edited 2012-01-10 01:50:32)
Well 2011 has come and gone with a good amount of shows in tow. But what do YOU think deserves the best in their respective categories? A lot of the following categries are similar to Random Curiosity but I have to admit I was not satisfied with some of their picks and I think others are the same Please do post and tell everyone YOUR opinion and why. Here are my picks for 2011:

Best Animation: Star Driver
Opinion: I have to admit, while the series is not to my tastes...in terms of animation quality Star Diver stands head and shoulders above most of the other anime this season. The quality remained consistently high throughout, particularly with the characters themselves. Even if Fate/Zero were up for consideration, the amount of actual animation in this anime remains just above Fate Zero.
Honorable Mentions: To Aru Majutsu no Index II, Fate/Zero, TIGER & BUNNY

Best Story: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Opinion: Madoka was a dark horse and MASSIVE surprise this year. No one at all expected a 'Maho Shoujo' type of anime to be of much note but this gem was utterly outstanding. I showed character deaths easily, displayed the utter despair all of the characters fall into and the pure darkness that is NEVER seen in this type of genre. It barely edges ahead of Steins Gate by just a bit.
Honorable Mentions: Hanasaku Iroha, Steins;Gate, Anohana

Best Soundtrack: Yasuharu Takanashi - Fairy Tail
Opinion: The mastermind behind Naruto Shippuden's soundtrack pulls through once again with his work on Fairy Tail. He switch perfectly from a Japanese-style theme in Naruto to a Celtic/Scottish type for this series and is OUTSTANDING! His songs used in battle sequences such as 'Sannin no Dragon Slayer', 'Seirei Gassen', and 'The theme of Erza' reflect outstandingly and soft and meaningful songs such as 'Tabitatsu no mono E' bring things to a wonderful closure.
Honorable Mentions: Kousaki Satoru - Star Driver, Kajiura Yuki – Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica + Fate/Zero, STARISH - Uta no Prince-sama Maji LOVE 1000%, 795Pro - THE IDOLM@STER

Best Opening Sequence: In My World by Rookiez is Punked (Ao No Exorcist OP2)
Opinion: It was a toss up between this and LM.C's The Love Song but after looking though once again, In My World stands tall and proud. The song alone is meaningful but the video where it shows Rin and Yukio's pasts and the happy times with their father to their current turbulent times was what proved this song as the best of this year.
Honorable Mentions: The Love Song by L.M.C. (Nurarihyon no Mago: Sennen Makyou OP2), Evidence by Daisy x Daisy (Fairy Tail OP7), Straight Jet by Minami Kubarayshi (IS Infinite Stratos OP), Lovers by 7!! (Naruto Shippuden OP9), Oath Sign by LiSa (Fate/Zero OP1)

Best Ending Sequence: Memoria by Aoi Eir (Fate/Zero ED1)
Opinion: When i heard this, I just knew. Nothing can top this song for 2011. The song itself is outstanding and in the top 5 best of 2011 but the video was what sealed the deal. It showed the Servants of Fate/Zero either at their greatest moments, their greatest dreams...it was outstanding. From watching Iskandar's dream of a triumphant return, to Diamund's failed romance, Caster's execution, Assassin's true identity as the Persian old man of the mountain, Lancelot and his namesake 'Du Lac' and finally Aturia's battle at Camlmn. Truly superb!
Honorable Mentions: Song For... by Rookiez is Punked (Bleach ED26), Kimi ni Todoke... by May/s (Kimi ni Todoke Season 2 ED), Magia by Kalafina (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica ED), Take Off! by 2PM (Ao no Exorcist ED1), Nananiro☆Namida by Tomato n’ Pine (Beelzebub ED3)

Best Male Character: Rin Okumura (Ao No Exorcist)
Opinion: Being a son of THE Devil is not easy. Just ask poor Rin who is hunted and wanted dead by both the Church and the demons of Gehenna. He had to see the man who raised him killed by his OWN blood father in just the 2nd episode. He then chose to sacrifice his humanity just to bring Fujimoto Shirou's body back from the Gehenna Gate before being recruited into the True Cross Academy by his manipulative half-brother, Mephisto Pheles. He then has to go through school life trying to become an exorcist while overcoming his jealousy of his younger twin Yukio. Being not too smart and having a crush on the girl who in turn crushes on his bro also does not do well for him. While trying to controll his powers around him he is ignorant to all the sheer manipulations done by Mephisto, the Church, Yukio, Satan and even his OWN GRANDFATHER! But no matter what, he managed to preserve and stay true to his own beliefs while saving Yukio from himself later on. Rin embodies sacrifice, courage, kindness and perseverance and the best choice for best male of the year.
Honorable Mentions: Kaburagi T. Kotetsu (TIGER AND BUNNY), Okabe Rintarou (Steins Gate), Nura Rikou (Nurarihyon no Mago: Sennen Makyou), Tatsumi Oga (Beelzebub)

Best Female Character: Ohana Matsumae (Hanasaku Iroha)
Opinion: From the start till the end, the spunky and determined Ohana captured the hearts of everyone around her. Forced to go to and worked at her grandmother's inn after he mother ran away with her latest 'lover', Ohana didn't lose heart. She determinedly stood against her stern and unyielding grandmother and won the respect and hearts of her coworkers with her never say die attitude. Eventually, she even begins to see the inn as less of a prison and more of a home and also gains the dream of succeeding it. Her grandmother's big revelation at the end nearly destroyed her plans but she still pushed through. She also managed to heal the rifts in her own family by reuniting her estranged mother with her grandmother and uncle. Truly if I had a daughter liek this, I would be proud beyond belief.
Honorable Mentions: Aoi Kuneida (Beelzebub), Rin Kaga (Usagi Drop), Victorique de Blois (GOSICK), Madoka Kaname(Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica)

Best Plot Twist: Marquis Albert de Blois takes over Saubure (GOSICK)
Opinion: A lot has happened the past year but it is GOSICK that provides the best twist. it moved from a story about a boy and girl solving the occasional mystery to Albert manipulating every scenario he can and even using his illegitimate daughter to gain power. He maneuvered Kujo into a kidnapping in order to force Victorique to use her talents to predict political movements, used her to find the truth about the Coco Rose case to gain more power then the Ministry of Science and then became Prime Minister of Saubure. He was responsible for keeping Victorique locked up and monitored by his legitimate son, Grevil. His instigation of riots using an old legend and exposure of Jupiter Roget's identity as a Gray Wolf to the other nobility are all part of his masterstroke. His comeuppance finally comes on the day of his election ceremony where Cordelia switches places with Victorique and exposes all of his crimes to the entire country. He is then killed by the woman he raped in a battle which also cost Cordelia her life but guarantied that Victorique would finally be able to live.
Honorable Mentions: Madara is NOT Madara? (Naruto manga), Sugata's Sacrifice (Star Driver), Homura's Suffering and Madoka's Fate (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica), Archlonogia destroys Tenrou Island and most of Fairy Tail (Fairy Tail), Death and the Strawberry 2 (Bleach)

Best Death: Father Shirou Fujimoto (Ao No Exorcist)
Opinion: When he was first shown, Father Fujimoto displayed the role of a caring albeit perverted father who is proud of his two sons. However, when Rin's powers awaken he is forced to hide his son from Satan's forces. However his attempts to get Rin to escape simply enrage his headstrong son who finally losses it and declares him of not being his father. The shock was enough for Satan to take over his body and then attempt to retake Rin. Shirou committed suicide to remove Satan from his body while declaring that Rin was HIS son and that he will not give him up to Satan. It was his death that motivates Rin and Yukio and gives them heart in their current turbulent lives. As the series progressed, we learned more about Shirou and how he watched over his children with utter loving care. We also learned of his actions that shaped future events such as honoring their mother's last wish to take care of her sons, mentoring Shura and asking her to mentor Rin in the future, saving Sugata's mother when she was giving pregnant and taking the Kurikara to seal Rin's demonic power, stopping Kuro from going on a rampage where the cat sith became Rin's familiar later, teaching Yukio to become an exorcist to help protect Rin, and more. Shirou's death had a huge impact being so early but his influence lasted through the series to protect his sons.
Honorable Mentions: Miyata Yuuki (Moshidora), Yamabuki Otome (Nurarihyon no Mago Sennen Makyou ), Tomoe Mami (Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica). Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki (Naruto manga)

Best Action: Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector
Opinion: A surprise dark horse anime that earned its place with absolutely spectacular mecha type battles. Backed by their awesome theme music, these original robots unleashed awesomeness not seen since Gundam 00 Season season last year. The final battle especially was nothing short of spectacular.
Honorable Mentions: Fairy Tail, FREEZING, STAR DRIVER, Nurarihyon no Mago Sennen Makyou

Best Romance: Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season
Opinion: Was the result in ever any doubt? With romance type anime taking a back seat this year, Kimi ni Todoke's 2nd season was guarantied to be the undisputed winner. It ended all misunderstandings, closed troublesome matters, and finally allowed Kazeheya to confess to Sawako.
Honorable Mentions: Mashiro-iro Symphony, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni!, Dragon Crisis

Best Drama: Anohana/Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai
Opinion: Anohana’s portrayal of a group of childhood friends who had grown distant after one of them suddenly died was one of self-discovery. Menma's ghost watched over them while only being able to interact with Jinta as he tried to bring everyone 'home'. The ending in particular is tear-jerking.
Honorable Mentions: Usagi Drop, Mawaru Penguindrum,

Best Sci-Fi: Steins Gate
Opinion: Yes, the result is not really in question. Although I did not watch this show, the respect I have for it is enough to pass it this slot. Time travel a la microwave that could send text messages to the past is something really different. The consequences of messing with fate were also detailed well including Rintarou's fate.
Honorable Mentions: C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control, Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector

Best Horror/Thriller: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Opinion: Originally in the year I guessed that Deadman Wonderland would be the winner but Madoka's complete upheal to showcase the viciously dark side of Maho Girls shocked me and others to their core. It managed to edge Deadman by just a millimeter for the sheer shock and surprise factor. However if Mirai Nikki was not a 2-koma season, it might have been able to take the win but now it just deserves a mention.
Honorable Mentions: Deadman Wonderland, Steins;Gate, Mirai Nikki

Best Mystery: GOSICK
Opinion: This was a tricky slot with the few candidates providing strong competition. But in the end, I felt that GOSICK deserves the title over Dantalian no Shouka. Probably cause GOSICK also has a 'pull' factore that keeps interest while it is easy to grow bored of Dantalian.
Honorable Mentions: Dantalian no Shoka, UN-GO

Best Comedy: DRAW - Level E and Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!!
Opinion: I JUST CANT DECIDE! As an old hand, Level E's dry and sharp humor sung to my soul making me wondering is this was really by the Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter X Hunter mangaka. Prince Baka's antics earn him the common wrath from Kraft and Yukitaka while he remains absolutely ice cool at all times. On the other hand, Maji de Koi proves crude adult humor which left me in stitches no matter what they did. The phallus battle episode made my nearly burst a lung laughing. With such superb picks, I guess its better to call it a draw.
Honorable Mentions: WORKING'!!, Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni!, Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san

Best Romantic Comedy: Infinite Stratos
Opinion: The romantic comedy genre separates itself from the individual romance and comedy ones by teasing us with potential relationships but never quite settling on one. Instead, the enjoyment comes from the character interactions themselves. Infinite Stratos combines high speed fake mecha battles with a completely oblivious main hero dealing with a cast of heroines with very distinct and lovable personalities. An all-star cast of female seiyuu made a battle for his heart incredible fun as the characters were often out of the ordinarily. Even with Houki 'winning' at the end, things are still left quite open for a sequel. Go Char!
Honorable Mentions: Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Ni!, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?, Hidan no Aria, Uta no Prince-sama Maji LOVE 1000%, Dragon Crisis

Best Slice of Life: THE IDOLM@STER
Opinion: Like Random Curiosity, I was set to pick Ikoku Meiro to take this slot, but Idomaster's last minute additional drama especially for Haruka and Chihaya's arcs give it the win. The overall anime managed to successfully portray a group of young women in their attempt to gain stardom and the problems in their way. Hanasaku iroha was kicked out by the slightly less interesting episodes at certain points.
Honorable Mentions: Ikoku Meiro no Croisée, A-Channel, Hanasaku Iroha, Usagi Drop

Most Underappreciated: Nurarihyon no Mago Sennen Makyou
Opinion: It was a hard call, but I felt that Nurarihyon no Mago's second season would be very underappriciated. Both anime and manga are EXTREMELY good but often end up having to match wills against stronger and more powerful opponents. In Sennen Makyo, Rikou is forced to travel to Kyoto to battle against Hagaromo Kitsune who is preparing to give birth to a dark evil. The 400 year grudge between the Nura Clan and the Kyoto Youkai come head to head in a battle of epic proportions. Ienaga Kana took a back seat to Yura Kekain as the main heroine who backs Rikou up against the fox queen. This is a dark squeal showcasing the ultimate grudge match while Rikou learns about his fathers murder and the true manipulators behind all the events.
Honorable Mentions: Dragon Crisis, Ikoku Meiro no Croisée

Biggest Disappointment: Blood C
Opinion: No doubt, CLAMP disappointed everyone with this...this fracas parody of an anime. The fact that it even dares to compare itself to Blood+ is a stain on a great anime's honor. The 'truth' could be seen half-way through a pathetic attempt to cover it all up. The final episode was the single most WTFness I've seen in recent years ever.
Dishonorable Mentions: FRACTALE, Starry Sky, BLADE

Best Anime: Ao No Exorcist
Opinion: As I did not see Steins Gate, I cannot in good fate give my vote there. Instead, Ao No Exorcist had it all. A strong story, compelling characters, good music, excellent action, an excellent anime-only ending, and one of the best supporting characters I've seen in years. It did not need fanservice, cold hard drama, and oversexed females. It kept the focus on the lives of two twin brothers who've had their lives changed in one night and now have only each other to look to the future to. Strong theme music also kelpt the mood somber when it needed to be. An outstanding anime for 2011.
Honorable Mentions: Steins Gate, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica, Hanasaku Iroha, TIGER & BUNNY, Infinite Stratos

Best OVA/Movie: Carnival Phantasm
Opinion: There definitely weren’t as many notable OVA/movies releases compared to 2010, but Carnival Phantasm delivers true WTFness every single scene. It plays with the minor details of characters, and will tickle your funnybone to dust.
Honorable Mentions: Macross Frontier - Sayonara no Tsubasa, REDLINE, Bleach Movie 4: Jigoku-hen, Colorful, Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo, BLACK LAGOON Roberta's Blood Trail

Best Heartwarming Moment: Father's 7 Years (Fairy Tail manga)
Opinion: After the attack on Fairy Tail by Phantom Lord we learn that it was organized by Lucy's father Jude Heartfillia to bring her home. Lucy then proceeds to cut ties with her father for his actions and the pain her caused her after her mother's death. After he loses all his money and Lucy saves a guild that he was arriving at that was attacked by a dark guild, he realizes that she was worried about him. They part on still sour terms. After the incident on Tenrou Island, Lucy and the rest of Fairy Tail's main members were presumed dead for 7 years. During this time, Jude finally learned what he had lost but never gave up a slimmer of hope. When Lucy returned, she learned that Jude had passed away just one mother earlier. At first Lucy was shocked that she could not cry at his death however upon returning to Magnolia, she is brought to her old home by her former landlady. There she learned that Jude had sent birthday presents every year without fail even after her disappearance in repentance for his actions against her especially for never acknowledging her birthday when she was young. Additionally, he sent her enough money to cover the rent for the last 7 years. In his final letter, Jude continued to hope that they would meet again one day and wrote in his last letter that she was his pride, finishing off the last letter by telling her that he had always loved her. Lucy finally is able to cry and mourn her father who probably died thinking that she still hated him. This moment barely edges out Cana's confession of being Gildart's daughter.
Honorable Mentions: Mom's Red Hair (Naruto Manga), The Right To Love (Fairy Tail manga), Rin and Daikchi (Usagi Drop), Together at Last (Kimi ni Todoke), Menma at Peace (Anohana), Rin and Yukio are born (Ao No Exorcist)

Best Battle: Ichigo Kurosaki vs Sosuke Aizen - Round 3 (Bleach)
Opinion: The final battle between Ichigo and Aizen delivered spectacularly. This is their 3rd fight and 1st real battle. Their first 'fight' was on Sokoyoku Hill and over in 5 seconds. Their second 'fight' involved Aizen pubstomping most of the Gotei 13, Vizards, Isshin, Yoruichi and Urahara as well. This time, Ichigo arrived after completing his Dangai World training and Aizen had 'evolved' two more times since their last encounter thanks to the Hogyoku. Ichigo arrived just in time to prevent his human friend's deaths and proceeded to literary drag Aizen away from the town to fight him. Their epic battle involved the demolishion of a mountain and large craters with Aizen forced to enter a 4th evolution state in a desperate attempt to keep up with Ichigo. After Ichigo stopped all of Aizen's attacks he them activated his newest technique: Mugetsu. Entering a new form, he sacrificed all of his spiritual energy in one attack to deal overwhelming damaged to Aizen allowing Urahara a chance to seal him. This epic battle concluded a long struggle lasting over 100 years of Aizen's manipulations on Soul Society. In the aftermath, Ichigo lost his powers and become completely 'normal' for 17 months.
Honorable Mentions: Sasuke Uchiha vs Danzo Shimura (Naruto Shippuden), Rin Okumura vs Amaimon (Ao no Exorcist), Fairy Tail Guild vs Grimore Heart Guild (Fairy Tail), Saber vs Lancer (Fate/Zero)

Best OP Song : Shonen Yo Ware Ni Kaere (Mawaru Penguindrum)
This song is awesome. At first you'd go like, "WTF is this song?" but then you just can't get enough of it. And it has very cool music composition.

Seizon senryaku, shimashouka?

I love OP's choices, so I won't add anything new, ahaha.

@ berantacan- I totally agree with you on best OP. That song is just amazing (As well as Mawaru Penguindrum itself, but that's for another category XD).

@ Roxas- Wow, now that's a long post. XD

Anyway, I'll try to comment on it as best as I can, seeing how I've seen more anime in the past year than I have in previous years, whether it was just a "watching the first episode to see whether I would like it" type of thing, or if it was an entire series. If I skip a category, that just means that I don't have any input on it since I didn't watch an anime of that particular category.

Best Animation: Hanasaku Iroha
Hanasaku Iroha had some of the prettiest backgrounds I've ever seen in anime, and the only comparison I can make to it in terms of backgrounds is 5 Centimeters Per Second. I guess backgrounds can count for this animation category, right? XD

Best Story: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica or Mawaru Penguindrum
I basically agree with everything you said about Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica except for the thing about it being barely above Steins;Gate, since I haven't seen it yet and I don't really know too much about it (Although, it is on my list of anime to watch). Mawaru Penguindru also has a really amazing story, it starts out in such a random direction and leads you somewhere totally different by the end of the anime. It has so much symbolism as well, it's one of those anime that you would have to watch multiple times to put all of the pieces together in order to completely understand it.

Best Opening: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Connect by ClariS) or Mawaru Penguindrum second opening (Boys. Come Back To Me by Etsuko Yakushimaru)
Both of the openings are very good in different aspects. The animation for the opening of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica's could really invoke emotions in me that I felt from the anime when I watched it, while Mawaru Penguindrum's second opening is excellent music-wise (Like what berantacan said, it's really catchy). However, if you're judging them based upon just TV sized opening and not the song itself, then Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica would be the winner in my opinion.

Best Ending Sequence: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Magia by Kalafina) or Fate/Zero (Memoria by Aoi Eir)
I'm only comparing these by just the song, since I can't find any video of the TV sized endings, but both are just truly amazing songs.

Best Male Character: Rin Okumura (Ao no Exorcist) or Daikichi (Usagi Drop)
I liked Rin for the same reasons that you did, my only complaint is that in the anime they made him seem too much like a typical Shonen hero than they did in the manga. I like Daikichi for a different reason though, because a character like Daikichi isn't your typical male leading character. Daikichi is just a typical adult, being thrust into the position of parenthood when Rin comes into his life. Sure, it may not be as heroic of a role as the role Rin takes in Ao no Exorcist, but it's still special in its own way.

Best Female: Homura Akemi or Sawako Kuronuma
You think Ohana was the best female? Honestly, she just annoyed me. She was way too over the top in confidence and spunk for a high school girl to make her a believeable character. She just didn't seem too realistic to me. She didn't have all that many flaws that counteracted this spunk either, which is something that I always look for in a good character. Homura, on the other hand, showed depth. She had what I would consider a flaw; caring too much for Madoka. This "flaw" then affected the rest of her personality, her determination to save Madoka, no matter how many times she failed and no matter how much she had to cast away her own true self just so she can save one person. Maybe this can't really be considered a true flaw, but it is just some sort of trait that affected the rest of her personality, something that I just didn't see in Ohana. (I hope my logic makes some sort of sense. XD)

And of course, Sawako will always have a special place in my heart~ If you need reasoning behind it (Such as my logic with Ohana and Homura XD), then here it is. Sawako's "flaw" is that she's too kind and caring about others for her own good. As an example, when Kazehaya wasn't talking to her for a long time, she didn't want to talk to him because she thought that it might hurt him more, that she was the cause of it. When Yano and Chizuru were upset because of her in the first season, Sawako thought that it was her own fault, and instead of finding out why, she just didn't talk to them because she thought that she would make things worse.

Best Plot Twist: Mawaru Penguindrum
There was a plot twist in almost every episode of the anime. Seriously, this show just kept me in suspense in its entirety. The only one that even comes close to Mawaru Penguindrum in this regard is Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica.

Best Death: Same

Best Action: Ao no Exorcist
I didn't watch many action series this year, so I guess this counts. XD

Best Romance: SAME

Best Drama: AnoHana
Only from what I've heard about the anime. I haven't actually seen it, but it's on my list (Like a ton of other anime from this past year XD). Mawaru Penguindrum and Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica were some other close calls for this one.

Best Horror/Thriller: Same

Best Slice of Life: Usagi Drop or Kimi to Boku
I loved how Usagi Drop showed us how much Daikichi's life changed and revolved around Rin once she came into his life. I also love how Kimi to Boku was done, it showed the typical lives of high schoolers which could be very believeable. There was also just the right amount of the anime focused on some small romances, which is very typical of high schoolers (I would know, being one now XD).

Most Underappreciated: Ikoku Meiro
In all honesty, I really loved this anime. It was such a great fusion of cultures, and the story was very cute as well, although I don't think too many people took the time to watch and enjoy this anime. Although, that could just be me. XD

Biggest Disappointment: Dantalian no Shoka
Generally, I don't watch an anime that looks bad, so I don't have much to say for this category. All that I can really say is that Dantalian no Shoka just didn't really live up to being considered a good or decent anime in my opinion. In one review of it that I read, the reviewer said that the anime felt "incomplete" by the end of the series, and that's exactly how I feel about it as well.

Best Anime: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
You think Ao no Exorcist was the best anime of the year? The anime seriously was lagging in the second half with so much filler and totally differed from the manga starting in the second half of it. Anyway, as much as I love Mawaru Penguindrum, I think Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica takes the cake for the best anime of 2011 for redefining the Mahou Shoujo genre in such an excellent manner.

Best OVA/Movie: Kyousougiga
It was so artistical, and the plot seemed very interesting, even though it was kind of lacking. I really hope to see more of this somehow.

Best Heartwarming Moment: Together At Last (Kimi ni Todoke)
It's Kimi ni Todoke, so of course I would consider it to be the most heartwarming moment of the year once Sawako and Kazehaya finally became a couple. Some other heartwarming moments would include Madoka's Sacrifice, and the ending of Mawaru Penguindrum.

Best Battle: Final Battle of Ao no Exorcist
It's the only battle I really saw from an action anime this year. XD

Actually, I do have one complaint for a particular anime: Nichijou. It should be both the Best Comedy and the Most Underappreciated.

I didn't know about the series until an artist who I admire (raemz/weee/1-kilometer) started to draw some of the characters from it, and I decided to watch it, given how the other series she's drawn for (such as Madoka Magica, Touhou Project, and Katawa Shoujo) have been ones which I greatly adore.

The result was a ridiculous but hilarious anime with wonderfully crazy yet realistic characters. If you don't agree with me--if you don't think Nichijou was the most hilarious anime of 2011--then you must not have seen it. o-o

Meh, it's everyone's opinions but thanks everybody for posting your thoughts.

@Toyumi - Well backgrounds do count but I prefer to view everything when deciding quality. As for best female, it depends on opinion. I love Sawako too but I prefer Ohana's peppy attitude a bit more. I admit, I agree with you on Dantalian no Shoka. It had potential but it just felt empty at the end which was why I gave the win in mystery to GOSICK. I felt that Ao no Exorcist deserved the win more. Most people would say that Steins Gate and Madoka Magica were the better picks but I find more in common with Ao. The anime had absolutely no choice but to use a filter ending since the manga's Kyoto arc JUST ended. (I suspect they are going to use the Kyoto arc for the upcoming movie). And their filter episodes were some of the best in recent anime times.

A pity you did not watch Fairy Tail. I would place the manga and anime at being better hen One Piece and Naruto most of the times. When they do a heartwarming scene I'm siting here crying true manly tears.

@Mystia - I watched Nichijou but I felt the most unappreciated should go to Nurarihyon. It was almost NEVER mentioned anywhere and barely acknowledged. High animation quality, lovable characters, and a strong story. As for comedy, obviously you have not seen Level E or Maji De koi! XD

Well, this is my opinion tho.

Best animation: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Loved the animation, very different from what i normally see, the witchgrounds are very..... special LOL.
Mention: Bakemonogatari was also one of the most spectacular animations, very new and interesting :D

Best story: Guilty crown
When i watched it at first i saw the resemblance to Code Geass, but as i continued watching, the story really pulled me in and really made quite an impact LOL especially after episode 15 :D
Mention: Anohana was very good too. Friggin ninja's cutting onions LOL

Best Soundtrack: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
I really liked Kajiura Yuki's compositions but this time i was utterly stunned, it was something really new from what she usually composes and it deserves something. Sis puella magi was my total favourite OST of 2011.
Mention: Guilty crown. Bios was also one of my favourite battle theme of the year.

Best opening sequence: Daydream Syndrome by Marina Fujiwara (Yumekui Merry OP)and Kawaru Mirai by Choucho (Kami-sama no Memo chou OP)
This one is a tie. Loved daydream syndrome for the ridiculously good Opening vid, really gave me the goosebumps. Kawaru Mirai had the nostalgic feel and the opening was really good too.
Mention: Authentic Symphony by Choucho (Mashiro-iro symphony OP), Oath sign by Lisa (Fate/Zero OP), My Dearest by Supercell (Guilty Crown OP)

Best ending sequence:Resuscitated Hope by Lisa Komine (GOSICK ED)
Loved this song. im a classic loving type of guy and this song with Lisa's strong, deep voice made me choose this song as the best of 2011. i had a tough desicion with Secret base from anohana but i've decided :D
Mention: Departures - Supercell/egoist (Guilty Crown ED), Manatsu no Photograph by azusa (Lotte no Omocha), Secret base ~Kimi ga kureta mono~ 10 years after (AnoHana ED)

Best Male Character: Katsuragi Keima (The World God Only Knows)
Always been my idol. Playing galge at home and at school LIKE A BOSS!! LOL PLUS!! A genius, cool, hits on girls like nothing. (my opinion tho LOL) What every guy wants to be. Well, its based on 2011 means cant choose Usui Takumi LOL
Mention: no mentions this time.

Best Female Character: Victorique de Blois (GOSICK)
Suffered having locked in a cell since birth, only with a picture of her mother to remember. And after that, locked in a tower, she led a sad life but still didnt show expression until Kazuya came along. What i liked was also her "geniusness" LOL being able to solve those cases took an extraordinary way of thinking :D
Mention: Sylvette (LetterBee), Madoka (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), Merry (Yumekui Merry)

Best Plot Twist - End of Episode 10 (Kamisama No Memo-Chou)
SPOILER ALERT!!
Just repeating the exact scene.
Shows the roof, Ayaka standing on the edge. My thoughts (she's thinking of narumi?) Suddenly JUMPS OFF!!. I was like WTF!!!! Then she hits the flower beds, starts bleeding. End of episode. During that moment i was totally stunned. With this super unexpected twist made me emo for a bit LOL. imo the best for 2011.

Best death: I didnt quite have a "favourite" death. so i'll skip this.

Best action: Kore wa Zombie Desuka
The battles are funny and sometimes really thrilling when it gets serious, like at the last battle or when the whole hord of monsters attacks. And most battles are really epic!! Like when he violently starts to @)*(#)*&!%&*(#%^@($ you know what i mean :D
Mentions: Guilty Crown, Yumekui Merry, Ao no Exorcist.

Best Romance: Hourou Musuko
Simple, boy meets girl and the romance starts. Here's the twist. The boy is the girl and the girl is the boy :D love how they developed the characters and turned it out really well. a well done to the author :D
Mentions: Mayo Chiki, Nodame Cantabile Finale

Best Drama: Ano Hana
The plot started out quite "impactful" as the story progressed, it becomes heavier and heavier which is really good. the very suspensive atmosphere made it one of the best. and when it came to the ending. a dam broke LOL!!!
Mention: Mawaru Penguindrum

Best Sci-Fi: Guilty Crown
I had a tough choice between Guilty Crown and Steins Gate. The reason why i chose guilty crown is because it is easier for people to watch. I had to rewatch Steins gate to actually understand some theory and stuff. Steins gate was good. But guilty crown took the overall. Good story, awesome music, even the battles are good.
Mentions: Steins Gate.

Best Horror/ Thriller: None. Didnt really had a favourite horror for 2011.

Best Mystery: GOSICK
Loved the atmosphere, puzzles, story, music, art direction (1920's) loved it. Had a tough choice against Kami-sama no memo chou but GOSICK won because of the relation of it with myths (like i said i love classics)
Mentions: Kamisama no memo cho, UN-GO, Dantalian no Shoka

Best Comedy / Slice of life (gonna combine both) : Nichijou
The only anime where brushing teeth can be this epic. Loved the fact that it implies daily life into pure epic comedy. laughing almost every second when watching it :D
Mentions: Maji de Watashi ni Koi shinasai (played the game too <3), Ika-Musume (SQUID GIRL FTW!!)

Most Heartwarming moment: Menma, I found you (AnoHana)
Nuff said, one of the most touching part of an anime i've seen in my life. Started crying right after Jintan couldnt see menma anymore. and everyone started searching for her. And when i saw those letters under the tree. OMG THOSE TEARS!! really i was exploded with mixture of feelings, happy and sad.

Most underappreciated: A-channel
A cute slice of life anime about girls. almost close to no story but for some reason pulled me in. Love the art, really cute, SUPER CUTE lol. I seen lots of "fans" insulting A-channel and i find it really sad. A-channel is worth a watch no matter what of others thinks :D

Most dissapointing: Blood C
Was expecting alot cuz it had Blood in its name. When i started watching it, i was so *facepalmed*. The story was really bad, didnt like the animation either. And i have to agree with Roxas with this one. The ending was a total WTF!!

Best OVA/ Movie 2011: Sora no Otoshimono The Movie
Although i read the manga before watching the movie. the movie still moved me a lot. Hiyori's love for tomoki seperated after her death and she turns bad. And as sora no otoshimono is meant to be a comedy anime. this movie changed it a lot. the seriousness was really dragging me into the movie.
Mentions: Onigamiden, Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo.

Best Anime Of 2011
Goes to....
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika
The story was brilliant, the art was one of the best, one really surprising plot, the OST's were the best. This anime really changed what i think about "mahou shoujo (magical girl)" animes. They used to be happy, cheerful (sailor moon) like. Madoka Magika stunned me with the crazy storyline, awesome opening and ending songs. Just a masterpiece of 2011.

and thats about it :D to those of you who took your time to read all this. you rock. heres a heart and a smiley for you <3 :D

- Stretch. -

Best of 2011?

Anime and Manga?

Challenge Accepted.

——————————————————————————————

I'll stick to complete anime and anime that completed in 2011 for this. Otherwise,
there'd be a certain anime still going that'd steal the show.

Best Animation Quality: STAR DRIVER
This was a toss-up with Ao No Exorcist. Bones and A-1 had one hell of a year!
While AoNoEx probably fits my taste moreso for animation quality, there's no
doubting the power of Star Driver. Through the series the quality was top notch,
and through all of the battles and heated moments, animation remained amazing.
What wins this for Star Driver is most likely the episodic battles that took place.
Each one was done beautifully, and despite the frequency of them, each felt unique.

If I was to include anime that started in 2011 and were still going, this would
be going to GUILTY CROWN. Just fyi; get use to seeing this little bit of fine print.

Best Manga Quality: FAIRY TAIL
A couple others that were up there included Bleach and AoNoEx. Say what you will
about stories and whatnot, you can't mock the quality of a manga's art -- and
FT has some of the best. Hiro Mashima has come a long way since the first 50 or so
chapters of RAVE [best manga all-time, hyuck hyuck] when his art was certainly
still a work in progress. However, once he found his ability, it flourished. FT
has been top quality since day one, and since then it's only improved. You want
action? Drama? A hint of romance? Maybe some sadness is your spice? FT has them
all, and delivers each emotion and event with the best art around.

Bleach, in terms of art quality, is right there. Kubo Tite may be getting heat
for his plot holes and contradictions, but his art is some of the best around.

Best Anime Opening: AO NO EXORCIST OP-2 ["In My World" by Rookiez is Punk'd]
No real question here, unless you want to put it up against the FIRST opening of
AoNoEx! Haha! Actually, STAR DRIVER is right behind AoNoEx with both of its
openings as well. Those two were tops of the year, no doubt.

If this included anime from 2011 still running, this would be going to Guilty Crown!
Told you to get use to seeing this. ~

Best Anime Ending: STAR DRIVER ED-2 ["Pride" by SCANDAL]
This was close. Wired Life, the second ending to AoNoEx, and Cross Over, the
first ending to Star Driver, are right behind. The songs are amazing, but what
really does it here is the animation involved in the ending. In fact, I almost
gave this to the ending of C: Control, due to its unique style, but Star Driver
barely pulled it out.

Best Plot Twist(s): MAWARU PENGUINDRUM
It was mentioned somewhere on here already -- every friggin episode of Penguindrum
was a plot twist. They had plot twists within plot twists of plot twists. It was
a Plotception orgy of twists. Some might get turned away by that, but not me!
Penguindrum was a top anime this year, and the story was top of the line.

C: THE MONEY OF SOUL AND POSSIBILITY CONTROL was literally right behind Penguindrum,
though. The reason it wasn't up there, however, was the twists were nothing
compared to PD. If it had been another year, I would have thrown C in there as
tops. Stein's Gate was also pretty close. MIND FAWKS.

Best Story: STAR DRIVER / AO NO EXORCIST [manga] / FAIRY TAIL [manga]
Yeah, 3-way tie, wanna fight about it? Star Driver's original story speaks for
itself; one of the best all-time. Much like Eureka Seven, its story will remain
with me forever. It's an amazing tale. For AoNoExo and FT, though, it was more
of the same for these two great manga. A great 2010 turned into a great 2011,
and through it all both series remained as the top manga stories around -- along
with Katekyo Hitman Reborn, which isn't up there with these 3 because having 4
would be too absurd.

AoNoEx started to fall off this award at the end of 2011/start of 2012, as a few
chapters there were just mind-numbingly slow-paced. That feeling was amplified
by the fact it's a monthly release. HOWEVER, the story is still tops, and the
recent chapters made up for any slow pacing it had.

Once again, if Guilty Crown was only in 2011, it would have won this -- Solo.

Best Original Soundtrack/Composer: AO NO EXORCIST-GUNDAM UNICORN / Hiroyuki Sawano
There's not a name in the industry that carries more weight right now than
Hiroyuki Sawano. He's done amazing work in the 4 episodes of Gundam Unicorn,
did a stellar job on AoNoEx, and now does an even BETTER job for Guilty Crown.
Unlike other OST's and Composers, each and EVERY song is of the highest quality.
Each and every song brings emotion, power, moreso than any other composer I can
remember. Hiroyuki Sawano is on top of the Composer's World right now.

He's also doing this certain anime, so, if it finished in 2011, the winner would
be Guilty Crow— H-Hey! You! Reader! Drop the Gun!

Best Battle/Conflict: KATEKYO HITMAN REBORN
The battles with Shimon and [CENSORED!!!!] were some of the best the series had
to offer. While some were lacking compared to battles from the Ring Arc or the
Future Arc, that's to be expected; can't have every best fight every arc! The
final battle here was one of the best of the series and the year, by far.

-Cough.- If it finished in 2011, Guilty Crow— -Shot by annoyed reader!-

Biggest Disappointment: BLEACH [manga] / BLOOD-C
Bleach, Bleach, Bleach.. How about I use some real bleach on my mind for the
contradictions and plotholes you created, and then take a second shot to forget
Blood-C was ever even conceived? Don't get me wrong; Bleach is still entertaining
as anything, and I read it every week. However it's story is very lacking, and
it is far from a top manga for me and many others. Fun and enjoyable to read,
but as far as story goes, Kubo has made a few errors in the past couple Arcs.

Some would argue more than a few!

As for Blood-C.. Actually, no. I'm not even going to try. It's bad. Just bad.
CLAMP.. Y U DO DIS?!

Most Unappreciated: NURARIHYON NO MAGO SENNEN MAKYOU
Roxas said it the same way I always explain it to people; Nura is amazing, but
it's forced to go up against the big boys in both anime and manga. The story
and characters are some of the BEST in the industry, but they get overshadowed
by series like ONE PIECE, BLEACH, and NARUTO. Like so many other manga, Nura tends
to get shuffled into the pile of other manga.

Luckily, it's really starting to get some of the respect it deserves.

Best OVA/Movie: GUNDAM UNICORN
I can't even remember how many episodes came out in 2011. One of them or two? It
doesn't matter. Unicron may still be running, but only release like once every
8-10 months, SO IT'S ON THE LIST. Gives me chills everytime I watch, and that's
also thanks to the amazing OST by Hiroyuki Sawano. Two more episodes left of this!

Most Dramatic Death: AO NO EXORCIST
It's been said here, but I refuse to spoil it. It's been spoiled, but I refuse
to say it! You all know what I'm talking about. If you don't, GO WATCH THE FIRST
FEW EPISODES, and you'll understand. You'll understand why I cried manly man
tears in the anime version this past year, and in the manga a couple years back.

— — — — — — —

BEST MALE Character: RIN OKUMURA [Ao No Exorcist]
Takuto from Star Driver was right behind Rin on this list, but the fact is Rin
has been gunning for this award ever since the AoNoExo manga started. Not to
mention, I feel a personal bond with a character like Rin, who I feel really
represents me on a certain level. If you haven't watched AoNoExo0 or read it
[you should read it. I didnt like how the anime ended, as it was anime-only]
GO DO SO NOW Or be consumed by the Blue Flames of Satan himself.

.. .. .. .. .. ..... I-If it was done .. in 2011 .. Shu Ouma from .. Guil--
-Bang. Bang. Silence.-

BEST FEMALE Character: OHANA MATSUMAE [Hanasaku Iroha]
Ohana, Ohana, Ohana.. Oh my, Ohana ~ <3 .. I gotta say, it's rare I've had a
female lead be so entertaining and fun. She makes each episode unique, fun, and
entertaining just by her reactions and actions alone. She may be the main character,
but if she was the ONLY character, the show would STILL be amazing.

ANIME of the YEAR: STAR DRIVER
This was tough. Star Driver gets the nod for the fact it's an original story anime,
which these days seem harder and harder to pull off -- but they are being more
and more successful. AoNoExo, if not for the anime ending, would be right behind
Star Driver. And yes, I know they have to do that with Anime ADAPTATIONS, as they
are called adaptations for a reason. Doesn't change my feeling on it, though.

Star Driver had everything you could want. Action, Action, Action, Act-- I mean,
romance, comedy, drama, twists and turns, mystery, more action, MINI SKIRTS, and
an amazing number of ways that the series could potentially continue. The ending,
while being pretty great, did put me off a bit [barely] -- but really, what other
way would have worked? But still, why Wako.. DAMN YOU GIIIIIRL.

*After the rant, a note is found. This note reads: "If it had finished in 2011,
ANIME of the YEAR would have been Guilty Cr— The paper was tossed into lava.*

MANGA of the YEAR: FAIRY TAIL / AO NO EXORCIST
FFFFFF. Damn. I almost want to replace AoNoEx with Reborn, here. Yes there's
another tie, ya wanna fight about it? FT is a series I can't say enough about,
so I'll stop myself from ranting. Done by Hiro Mashima, my favorite mangaka, FT
takes all of HM's best skills [story and drawing women, hehe] and AMPLIFIES
them to unheard of levels. Screw the One Piece fan boys saying it rips OP. You
know what OP rips? DBZ! YEAH! -- Not really. It if really ripped something, it
wouldn't sale well -- and FT sales very well these days.

Besides, Hiro does steal things from other manga. I have to admit. What manga?
His own! RAVE! Which, by the way, is my favorite manga all-time. FT is right behind.

As for AoNoEx, the wheels kinda started to come off near the end of the year,
and it didn't help that it was on break the last month of the year. However,
things have rebounded in early 2012, and that end of the year stutter was the
ONLY fault that this manga has had since day 1. Few manga, if any, are PERFECT.
And this stutter, if you can even call it that, was very brief.

Reborn is right there with these guys, but I couldn't have a 3-way tie for
Manga of the Year.. COULD I?! SURE I COULD! But I didn't ~

————————————————————————————————————————

I may have some more stuff to add. Hyuck, hyuck. Need my coffee.

@Snow - A guilty Crown fan I see. On that anime refer below:

-Also, Bakemonogatari is a 2010 show so it would not be considered here.

On 2-Koma Fall 2011 Anime - Some people might ask why I did not consider animes like Guilty Crown, Mirai Nikki, Persona, Gundam AGE, Chihayafuyu, Last Exile -Ginyoku no Fam and Shakugan No Shana III in my top list. The reason is because these are 2-koma seasons that stretch into the Winter 2012 season as well. These anime have yet to end so I honestly in good faith cant mention them despite so many strong picks for category:

Mirai NIkki (Best Horror/Thriller Candidate/Possible Winner)
Gundam AGE (Best Story + Best Action Candidate)
Last Exile -Ginyoku no Fam (Best Story Candidate)
Chihayafuyu (Best Slice of Life Candidate)
Guilty Crown (Best Action + Best Soundtrack + Best Animation Quality + Best Sci-Fi Candidate)
Shakugan No Shana III (Best Action + Best Animation + Best Anime of 2011 Candidate)(Possible Winner for Best Action)
Persona 4 (Best Story Candidate)

Thats why I would not consider giving Guilty Crown any mention in my list. Besides the fact that it's first 14 episodes was horrible and only now is the story finally beginning to improve.

@Shuy - Fairy Tail bro hug! I do not really approve for Hitman Reborn for any of those categories you picked. The reason is that Akira Amano is similar to Katsura Hoshino (D. Grey Man) in that both of their manga's have troublesome fight scenes. At times it is near impossible to decipher what is going on. However the anime's both series finally managed to to clear up the manga's mess but I doubt that we'll be seeing any for the current arcs as both animes have ended. Ao no Exorcist at times also has these problems in the manga.

@All - I also decided to add an additional category:

Best Dark Horse: TIGER AND BUNNY
Opinion: This category is for anime that despite what you feel is one of the best you've seen in 2011 but is heavily overshadowed by the bigger guns (Madoka Magica, Mawaru Penguindrum, Anohana, Ao no Exorcist and Steins gate). It is not underapricated and in fact can be considered one of the top 5 best of the year. In my opinion this would be TIGER AND BUNNY. This anime has top notch production quality, a 5 star story, lovable and funny characters, a surprising main character that breaks away from the norm in that role, good music and is overall a top 5 pick of the year.
Honorable Mentions: Usagi Drop, To Aru Majutsu no Index II, Natsume Yuujin-chou San, IS Infinite Stratos , Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, Nichijou

I tooootally disagree with you on the first 14 episodes of Guilty Crown being horrible.
They were amazing, and that's not the fanboy talking. Characters have each been
carefully thought out and portrayed, events and details presented in some of the
best ways I've seen in years, and the overall quality is tops across the board.

Not to mention, the show has summoned powerful emotions from as early as episode
one, and even moreso in recent episodes with making you feel something. Whether it's
anger, sadness, excitement, joy, frustration — GC has done an amazing job at having
the viewer experience some type of emotion.

That aside, FAIRY TAIL BRO HUG!

For Reborn though, I know what you mean, but I would disagree. Akira Amano's style
has drastically improved, as have all the fight scenes, as the manga moved away
from being a gag/purely comedy story, to a more shounen and action packed story.

At first, fights were a bit hectic, and in some of the more chaotic fights in recent
arcs, things have been at times hard to follow. However, if you've followed the
manga for awhile, things like that aren't hard to see through. I for one can
easily distinguish what is presented in battles, even during some of the more
art-intensive scenes [the recent battle with Xanxus and Hibari shows a bit of that].

With the battle/conflict being given to Reborn for me, the epic arc from start
to finish of Shimon was great. I would have actually given the award itself to
FAIRY TAIL, which when it comes down to it had the best fights. Since I mad it
conflicts, however, I think Reborn did this best. What makes the battles so
intense in the last arc of Reborn is the story behind it, which gives it that edge.

BUT, Everyone's got their own opinions. A great thing about anime and manga is it's
something that all kinds of opinions and views can interact, ohoho.

You're not including 2-koma series that will continue into 2013? That's a shame, Shinsekai Yori would be one of my favorites if that's the case, as well as Psycho-Pass. A lot of anime blog sites that I frequent included them into their 2011 reviews last year since they started in that year (For example, with Chihayafuru). Oh well.

Also, I'm surprised you didn't put Sakamichi no Apollon, Tsuritama, Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita, Natsuyuki Rendezvous, and Zetsuen no Tempest in bold. They all got a considerable amount of hype from the sites that I frequent.

Anyway, I plan on posting in the best of 2012 thread whenever you make it.
