So, non-US person here just trying to understand what all the kerfuffle is about. Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (PROTECT IP Act or PIPA) are apparently undermining the freedom of the internet. If these bills pass then the government could shut down (or at least block) any site that provides non-consented access to copyrighted material [SOPA] or counterfeited material [PIPA]. So, would someone playing a cover of Rolling Stones on youtube be considered counterfeit? Would someone's signature containing a screengrab from a copyrighted anime be considered copyright infringement?

SOPA introduces a black list which ISPs will be required to honor. The black list contains domain names whose DNS entries must not be shared with clients. In the first place, this system is flawed, because websites can get new domain names, or be accessed directly by IP address. Also, peers can share DNS entries with eachother, bypassing their ISP's DNS server. Your concern is about what constitutes copyright violation, which is a separate issue. However, it seems SOPA is a law easily abused because, unlike the DMCA, the website operator doesn't get a chance to take down the content. I think? |

Yeah, I forgot about that one, too. Some sites have been affected by SOPA even though the bill was not passed. I know MU is completely shut down now and under heavy investigation, and other similar file-sharing sites, too. >< ------- |

Well as bills such as SOPA and PIPA are getting delayed and stuff, people are trying to make new bills such as ACTA to pass. They will keep trying to get bills to pass so we have to never let our guard down. |

I think that SOPA/PIPA and ACTA was build in order to halt (or if not, minimize) the piracy that was going on everyday (not only including software, but other goods and stuffs sold in the market). Like what I have in my Figma Collection and Computer hardware (Asus Motherboard), I just bought 23 Figma Originals, but I get pissed off when I got a fake once that has low quality, and i got a cheap brand new motherboard, but it was defective. I only buy goods with high durability and good looks that I can appreciate, but only originals have this kind of standards (few are imitations that have this kind). I also like to download music and softwares in the internet using megaupload and other downloading sites because of one thing, "IT WAS SHARED". Without those, I can't appreciate Japanese and Anime Songs that I Like without those download sites because there are no Original CDs or Music Album that was sold in the music markets of our country. But in using legal method, I know can purchase it online, but its impossible because I don't want to use Credit Cards nor Master Card in this transactions for security purpose. ^_^ I'm not and Anti or Pro in this SOPA/PIPA or ACTA thing. But when you read this bill and go think a simulation only using with common sense only about this bill, this is a very bad for all consumers. Try to think, I am a legal customer of a High Speed Broadband Internet Account, and I like to "SHARE" (meaning "SHARING MY PURCHASED PRODUCTS") to everyone in our streets using my WIFI Router in order to the students and persons that has a wifi capability or LAN capability Mobile Devices like Laptops and Ipod/iPAD (they must have a extra RJ45 CAT5e Cable for Laptops if LAN was used ^_^) who will pass by can connect to a free internet, but with ACTA, I will become criminal. ^_^ (Correct me if I'm wrong and I appreciate it) I hope they will revise this bill for common good or even revoke it temporary until they made a good, planned, and, lawful bill that benefit by all people, not including those people illegally cloning original goods into low quality imitations. For DA: MF and RS starting to delete files that has copyright on it. That was I heard to my friends that was downloading in that site yesterday. And even ORON is changing its download rules and links in order to avoid sue like they did to MU. |

^ i pretty much agree! it's not like i won't buy originals after i download..usually i'll end up buying them when i really like what i downloaded. plus, some stuffs are hard to get other than online methods. i'm trying not to use too much of credit cards...OTL |
