Shinsengumi!
Link | by Rika-sama on 2005-06-30 00:32:14
Have any of you guys heard this group before? Well, after Ikeda-ya, it was one of the most popular police forces in feudal Japan! Though, after time, the Shinsengumi was slowly crumbling and soon before long after a long war, the only three survivors left were Shinpachi Nagakura, Sanosuke Harada, and Saitou Hajime!!

Unfortunatly they were all split up...

Sanosuke was banned to China for some reason I think, then he started a bandit group, but died not far long after that, I think in combat.

I'm not quite sure about Saitou, I think he later died from a desease.

And Shinpachi...well he seemed to be the only one that lived the rest of his life peacefully! When he started to grow alittle older, he wrote a novel about his times in the Shinsengumi. Its still in stores!!!

Yeah, just a bit of Info for ya. I'll list the main members of the Shinsengumi for ya, k?

Kondo Isami (Captain)
Hijikata Toshizo (Vice Captain)
Itou Kashitarou (Military Advisor)
Yamanami Seisuke
Okita Souji (1st squad Captain)
Nagakura Shinpachi (2nd squad Captain)
Saitou Hajime (3rd squad Captain)
Matsubara Tadaji (4th squad Captain)
Takeda Kanryuusai (5th squad Captain)
Inoue Genzaburou (6th squad Captain)
Tani Sanjyuurou (7th squad Captain)
Toudou Heisuke (8th squad Captain)
Suzuki Mikisaburou (9th squad Captain)

I only read from an anime magazine that some (if not all) of the characters of Rurouni Kenshin really existed. If I'm not mistaken, Himura Kenshin did really exist, standing 5'1. When I heard that, along with the magazine saying that Saitou Hajime really did exist too, I just assumed that the Shinsengumi was for real.

That's some cool info you got there! Nice!

^_^

I believe that Saito died from a Stomach ulcer, around the age of 72..he worked as a guard in a Tokyo Museum until he reached his senior ages..
if any of you guys seen Kenshin, Saito did become a police spy for the Police Commissioner, registering under the name Gorou Fujita..

Okita died at a young age, due to Tuberculosis, around the age of 25..

I found a site with info on the Shinsengumi, but i think its down now..i saved all the information on my comp though, so if you guys need info, just ask

If your interested in the Shinsengumi there should be lots of historical stuff on the web and in books. It is a favourite topic of the Japanese and many, many stories have been written around the Shinsengumi. If I'm not mistaken they battled on the side of the Shogunate when it was collapsing. The character of Kenshin is based on a man by the name of Kawakami Gensai. Sadly he was executed not long after the Meiji government was restored for some kind of political disagreement (I can't quite remember what it was). I'm sorry, I am beginning to waffle. I just love this stuff and I love to share with anyone who is intersted. Anyway, it's been awhile since I looked up the information so I may have some of my facts confused.

There is a drama or J-Dorama series air in Japan in 2004, its about the life of the Shinsengumi, one of the actors in the Drama is Member of the J-Pop Band, SMAP. I think it is around 48 episode or so. The Shinsengumi was a group of samurai who patrols the city and keeping it under control, Kind of like Cops nowadays. The original Shinsengumi was a well respected group until 2 orginal member commited some scandel that force the Shinsengumi Captain, Hijikata or Kondou to assassinate them, After the assassination it the Shinsengumi were called Mibu, in another word Wolves. To prevent anymore corruption Hijikata wrote some hard core strict law based on the 'Code of Bushido.' Basically if they went against the rule then its sepukku or hara kiri by punishment. Anyway, The Shinsengumi could be either viewed as Heros of Japan or murdering wolves. It depends whether it was good to keep Japan under the shogunate control or to colonized and work with westerners and give power back to the emperor. Japan eventually came back to Shogunate style Militarism and made history.

I've watched this same taiga dorama on NHK, and I must say it's really quite good.

Great historical trivia, Bushido.

a fan of peacemaker is see rika-san, im quite interested in the shinsengumi too, and have been for quite a while.
It is true that when Hajime became a police officer he was granted the use of a katana instead of the plain swords (-_- im not sure what they used exactly), he died at 71 =P, he was an alcoholic... But in kenshin, he is not really designed around the real saito, rather the peacemaker version was closer, and he was left handed ^^.
Okita had about 5 sec screen time in kenshin -_- and really no other members came up, however Aoushi, was actually created after the design of Hijikata... Random knowledge.

Endless
