Ruby and Sapphire Remakes Confirmed!
Link | by on 2014-05-07 13:30:51
Finally, the Hoenn remakes are on their way! Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are expected to be released worldwide (Like they did with X and Y) this November!

Here's the official trailer to confirm it!

These games may be remakes, but please still give warning to any spoilers in your post! Some people might not want to see the remade landscapes, graphics, etc. until they experience it for themselves!

Saw this earlier.

The trailer mentions "new" twice, and I'm hoping that Nintendo is not just using that to say that it will be all new for kids and old for everyone else. I know Heart Gold and Soul Silver didn't do a lot of new stuff, but the few things they did do were pretty awesome (I did like the Pokewalker and loved the ability for your Pokemon to follow around behind you).

Anyway, it's good to know it'll be out this November worldwide again. I was slightly concerned that Nintendo would only pull that with X and Y, then go back to how they used to do it with the other games.

Personally, I'll probably pick up Alpha Sapphire, since I have a bit of a preference for the colour Blue/Sapphire. Despite saying that, I'll likely end up picking Torchic as my starter once again. I'm not a fan of Treeko or Mudkip or their evolutions.

When we find out more about which Pokemon will be included in the starting Dex, I'll decide my team from there. I don't recall what I used back when I played R/S/E originally, but I know that my transfer Gardevoir came from when I played R/S/E and has stayed with me in every game since then. If the starting dex is mostly Gen III stuff, then I'll probably go:

Gardevoir
Gallade (Not a Gen III, but part of the Ralts evo line, so I would suspect he would still be there even if the dex is limited to Gen III at first)
Blaziken
Crawdaunt (Maybe)
Roselia (Maybe)
Unknown

I don't actually have a lot of go-to's for Gen III. Outside of Gardevoir, Blaziken and Milotic (which I don't use because that's basically my friend's signature Pokemon), I don't really have many favorites in Gen III. Of course, given this is a remake, the starting dex will probably be a mix.

There is some speculation that they're adding a lot of new stuff to this. Some say there might be new stuff to do added to the region (On one site they speculated that they might make an entirely new region for the games but I highly doubt that), and then again there's also the matter of whether they're including Pokemon from newer generations into the remakes as well, or if it'll be like what you said and they're limiting it to Gen III Pokemon at first.

I'll get Alpha Sapphire as well, Sapphire was my first Pokemon game so I'm especially excited for the remakes (Well, that in addition to being a bit disappointed with X/Y). I'm either picking Torchic or Mudkip, I'm not entirely decided on that just yet, and I'm waiting on deciding on my team as well (Although I'm getting an Altaria no matter what).

Personally I liked Gen III Pokemon. Granted, it's not at the top of the list (Gen IV and Gen V are for me), but there are a number that I do like. Altaria is my favorite Pokemon and it's a Gen III, and some of the others that I'm fond of include Breloom, Camerupt, and Swalot.

New details have gone up for the remakes.

Here's a link to the scan from CoroCoro.

I won't spoil some of the images in that scan, but it does continue a few interesting little details. There definitely seems to be new content story wise, which is good. Although whether it's an all new story or just a small add-on (like Platinum had) is hard to tell. There do seem to be new designs for Team Magma and Team Aqua members (here's a good look at them), so my hopes are a little bit higher that this will be a new story.

Sceptile and Swampert will be getting Mega-Evolutions as well, although this was kind of to be expected given that Blaziken has one. Personally, Sceptile's looks alright, although not especially different to be honest. It switches to Grass/Dragon typing and picks up the Lightening Rod ability for. . .I don't even know what reason (he's already like nearly immune to electricity as it is, why the hell would you give him an ability that adds maybe a 25% increase to resistance?). Swampert's design I'm less enthusiastic about. It looks a bit gorilla-like and it only picks up the Swift Swim ability (increase speed in the rain). It's the kind of ability you'd need to probably devote a move slot to setting up if you wanted it to be any good (Environment battle conditions don't seem to be thrown in a whole lot in the main game these days. Not rain anyway.)

There's also going to be a Mega form for Diancie as well from the looks of it, which is a little odd considering we still haven't gotten basic Diancie yet (or have we? I haven't heard anything about it after the whole "people hacking it in" thing a while back). Either way, I like the look of the Mega Form. I might actually alternate between Mega-Gardevoir and Mega-Diancie, assuming Diancie will be catchable in the game and not like an event Pokemon or something.

Finally, here's a look at the Boy/Girl models for the game. I don't really have a problem with them. They made a few very small changes to the original designs, such as the guy not wearing a pants with shorts combo anymore (which I kind of like actually. His shorts over pants look in the original was a bit weird), and on the girl character they changed the bandanna to a bow/ribbon and the bike shorts/dress-skirt thing to just bike shorts with short shorts. Nothing major overall. I don't see any changes in clothing in the screen shots shown though, so there might not be any character customization in the remakes like there was in X and Y. If that's the case then I'll be a bit disappointed, since I liked being able to customize my character in X and Y, even if it was only minor.

I cant wait to play it, Im getting Alpha Sapphire. Pokemon X and Y were good but end game seemed lack luster.

@DMG117 - End game in X and Y was horrible. The only good thing in it was the Looker side quest, mainly because it had a little bit of story to it (they could have spaced it out a bit though in my opinion. Most of the side quest just involves you going to a particular street of the city).

Other than that, there was basically nothing to do in the post game. 'Friend Safari' wasn't even worth doing once, the Battle House seemed pretty lackluster even by Battling Tower standards. Even if you wanted to busy yourself by looking for Mega-Stones, you had to do it at a specific time of day.

I am hoping that the remakes add in a bit more post game content, since I don't think Ruby and Sapphire had much either besides the Battle Tower. Even if they don't, at least it's a Pokemon Game to bide the time until we get news of a new one.

Anyway, in other news, Sableye is getting a Mega form. That's nice, I guess. It doesn't look especially cool or anything and it's ability change doesn't seem like it would be much good either (it gets Magic Bounce, which just reflects stat moves like Will-o-wisp or Thunder Wave).

I guess it was coming sooner or later!

If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

So , Metal Metalgross confirmed and the ability is Tough Claws as well as Mega Diancie having Magic Bounce.

I am very disappointed on the video of ORAS with no Gym Leaders , Elite Four and Champion's Animation on battle.

Secret Base in ORAS is amazing , you can make a gym yourself and let your friends to challenge.

The Pokemon Contest now have cloths for you Pokemon , hope it won't as bad as Pokemon Musical.

@SRS - I was kind of disappointed to see that Mega Diancie got stuck with Magic Bounce. That's two new Mega forms with the same ability. Magic Bounce doesn't even seem all that useful (not sure about the competitive scene, but I don't care for that anyway).

The no animations for Leaders, E4 and Champion is kind of a let down, but nothing major. You only go up against them once for the most part and it's only a passing animation. It would have been nice to see, but yeah, nothing big.

I do like what I see on the Secret Base front. At least this time with the internet features people/friends will actually be able to see/interact with your base. Much better than it being an essentially useless area (although I did still like them in the original, since it was kind of cool to have a personal secret base).

It's kind of hard to do worse than Pokemon Musical. Even if they copied the contest from the original and left it with the old 2D graphics it would still be better than the Musical. Hated that so much. That being said, I'm hoping that the dress up feature encompasses more Pokemon than just Pikachu. Someone pointed out that it would be a crazy amount of work to do up costumes for 750+ Pokemon with wildly different body shapes and sizes. Of course, on the other hand, they did create animations for all of those Pokemon in Amie, so it's not impossible. Even if it's only for a handful Pokemon, I'd be okay with that so long as it's not entirely Pikachu focused.

Also, a quick heads up for X and Y people, there's a Vivillon giveaway currently going on through Wi-Fi.

It's going on until the 31st I think. Hold Hands is a special move, but all it apparently does is raise happiness with the teammate Pokemon. I guess it's useful if you wanted to boost happiness outside of Amie, but I'm not sure if it's easier or quicker than Amie.

Anyway, still no news on Diancie for us. Japan is getting it with the movie release as an event Mon, but still no idea when we will see it.

@Jonathan
Same here , Mega Diancie can have a new ability instead of Magic bounce. People would use Espeon and Mega Diance get hit by a Steel move is no good.

I agree with the Pokemon Contest dress up with 700+ Pokemon and I saw a picture somewhere on facebook that Poochyena dress up not sure is it official.

Well , all we have to do is wait.

Only about two months until the games come out. There have been a lot more Mega forms announced since July.

Personally, I'm happy to see that Gallade is getting a Mega-Evolution. Now is finally the time for me to go with the Gardevoir/Gallade combo I've wanted to have for a while. I always end up forgetting or passing on Gallade (I've only gotten over that weird tire hip thing they have going on over the course of XY). My friend is still waiting on the rumored/speculated Milotic Mega-Evolution, which I kind of hope for too, since none of his favorites have a Mega form yet.

Assuming you are able to trade from the beginning of the game (since the trade mechanic is built into the social features these days and not located in a Pokemon Center anymore), I think I will be ditching the starter Pokemon and going with a Female and Male Ralts combo instead as my starters. Torchic is still the only one of the three I really like, but I'm not a really big fan of Blaziken in comparison to the final form of other generation starters. So now my team is shaping up as:

Gardevoir (Gardevoir, along with Gallade, are going to be my starters if the trading option is available right from the start of the game like I am hoping. If so, I'll just breed two Ralts and swap them in as soon as the game allows me to, then stick Torchic in the PC.)
Gallade (Mega form looks pretty cool and it's about time I include him on my team, especially since my final teams are always roughly 5 to 1 in terms of Special types versus Physical types.)
Skarmory (Part of me wants to pass on Skarmory this one time even though he's one of my mainstays, just to try something different. Then I remember that I will need a Pokemon capable of flight in the end for convenience, so I might as well have one that is also able to carry its own weight. I guess the determining factor will be whether or not they can be encountered pre-National Dex.)
Crawdaunt (Maybe)
Roselia (Maybe)

I haven't even begun to plan my team yet haha, I probably will closer to when the games are coming out though. I'm super excited that a mega-evolution of Altaria was announced, since Altaria is my favorite Pokemon, so I really want to see how that works out.

Aside from that, I'll probably stick with a Hoenn starter (I don't have any Pokemon I'd be interested in transferring over from my copy of X to start with anyway haha), however I've been thinking about it a bit and I'm undecided between choosing Torchic (Who is a solid but common choice) or switching things up and choosing Treecko (The starter I chose when I played Sapphire, which I kind of hold near and dear to me since that was the first Pokemon game of my own that I played through and beat). As of now I'm leaning more towards Treecko, but we'll see what happens when I get around to actually planning my team.

Well the Primal Forme of Kyougre and Groundon's ability is nice. Just like players who predicted on Pokemon Showdown. i am waiting Primal Rayquaza to be announced.

Mega Sharpedo and Mega Camerupt is easy to guess. But still , waiting for Mega Flygon and Milotic.

So,
My team on Omega Ruby will be
Breloom - Why no Treecko ? I don't want to use starters on story mode.
Crobat - My favourite Pokemon in all times , why not ?
Mawile
Froslass
Flygon
Lanturn

So a bunch of more news shown off in the past month. Looks like good stuff. Doesn't appear as though the Battle Frontier will be making a comeback though, which is kind of disappointing honestly. I mean, being able to fly around the map is cool, but it serves a limited purpose.

I really like the look of Mega Pidgeot and Mega Beedrill. Unfortunately my friend basically called Pidgeot right away (we don't like using the same Pokemon that the other is using for some weird reason. We always try and make sure that we have completely different teams). I wouldn't mind using Beedrill at all, except for the fact that Bug type Pokemon quickly become a drag on the team about half way through the game, like what happened with my Vivillon in XY.

Not really sure how I feel about Mega Steelix. I do know that I'm not especially fond of Mega Glalie though. His giant jaw just hanging open makes me look so weird.

Other than that, I also got the demo for the game. I have the items that can be transferred over, so I'll have a few things to start the game off with. Didn't manage to trigger the secret mission and get a Nugget to transfer though. I'm not likely to keep trying for it either, since it's apparently completely random and every time you complete a mission, you have to wait for the promo vid to load up, skip it, wait for the game to bring up the title screen again and finally restart. Not to mention the fact you have to sit through Steven and his flying scene every time you go to and come back from a mission, which can't be skipped.

It's out now. And I'm still not sure whether to get them. See, they're remakes. I kinda... Well, what I hope is that they haven't ran out of ideas yet and they really just wanted to do remakes. I really wouldn't like it if the next pair would be a couple remakes.

The will-o'-the-wisp will lead me there.

Re: Ruby and Sapphire Remakes Confirmed!

@Kale St. Cloud - I doubt you have to worry much about that. That would be two remake releases in a row, which isn't likely. Also, the only games they could go on to remake at this point are Diamond and Pearl. Every other game before then has been remade in some form (I suppose they could remake Red and Blue a second time, but I doubt they would). DP was only about 7 or 8 years ago though, so I think it's more likely that you'll see those games remade after the next installment rather than before it. Heart Gold/Soul Silver was released 10 years after Gold/Silver, while Omega/Alpha was released 11 years after Ruby/Sapphire. I would expect another 2 or 3 years before a DP remake.

The remakes also seem to be a case of stalling for time from my point of view. Something to keep Pokemon fans going until they can come up with another entirely new game.

As for whether or not you should get them, that's tough to tell. If you didn't play Ruby/Sapphire originally, then I would say yes. If you played RS originally and wasn't a big fan of that entry, then maybe pass for now. The graphics and everything are much better, but the Pokemon selection up until the National Dex opens is pretty disappointing (that's just a personal opinion). They made some small additions to the story to work Mega Evolution in there, but overall it's basically the same plot. The post game content is a little bit better than XY, since it actually had a post game scenario to play through, but it's pretty short.

Personally, I got Alpha Sapphire mainly because I felt I didn't get enough out of XY. The graphics update in XY was great, but the rest of the game kind of fell apart around it in some places (I had some issues with the XY plot and the wasted potential of it). It's also been about 5 or 6 years since I last played Emerald, so the game has kind of slid from my mind enough to make it feel slightly new.

Overall I liked this iteration. My only major complaint is a personal one, which is that the Hoenn Pokemon selection was pretty bad (even though it's where two of my favorite Pokemon came from). The post game scenario was indeed short and there wasn't much to it besides a lot of flying from point to point, but I still really enjoyed it for some reason. I still hate the Battle Maison though. I would have preferred the Battle Frontier to return in full.

Anyway, I finished Alpha yesterday. I'm just hanging around and waiting for my friend to finish at some point so that we can try a few Multi Battles, then I'll likely be putting it away to move on to other games completely. Took me about 48 hours from start to finishing up the post game scenarios, which I'm happy with. My final team wound up as follows:

Gardevoir (F)(Shiny)(Mega Stone) - Worked out well. Has basically the same move set as I usually have, but I kept Thunder Wave on her instead of Thunderbolt so I could have a pure paralysis move. Also, Shiny Mega Gardevoir looks awesome.

Gallade (M)(Shiny)(Mega Stone) - Worked out well. I was kind of disappointed to find out that you have to wait until the complete end of the game before you can get his Mega Stone, but in terms of team contribution he proved to be a big help.

Aggron (M)(Mega Stone) - Worked out better than I was expecting. I decided to go for an Aggron a few hours into the game, mostly as an alternate Steel type to Skarmory, who I usually pick. I also found out he has a Mega form, which I had either forgotten about or didn't know before. In the end, he was a huge help. He was the one that managed to take down that damn Mega Metagross, since his Mega form and high defence was capable of withstanding multiple Giga Impacts.

Flygon (F) - Had a hard time arriving at this one. Since I had gone with Aggron, I didn't want to bring another Steel type on to the team with a Skarmory, but I also needed a flight capable Pokemon. Ended up catching a Trapinch and winding up with a Flygon for my (quick) flight purposes. Also proved to be a pretty good member of the team, since it had Dragon, Ground and Flying type moves.

Roserade (F) - Worked about as well as I thought it would. She definitely worked out better than the last time I had a Grass type on my team (Serperior). I found myself running in to a lot of Pokemon that were weak to Grass though, so that's probably why she felt more useful.

Crawdaunt (M) - Disappointed. He was working out well at first, but in he end he got way too overburdened with freaking HM moves. I had to give him Surf, Waterfall and Dive by the end of the game so that I wouldn't have to carry like three different HM Slaves at a time while exploring. During the Elite Four, he got knocked out easily in just about every match. There's also the fact that his Water typing was of little benefit against most opponents. I didn't take on many Fire types (since I was rocking Alpha Sapphire), I took on a lot of Water types (because of the same reason as before), and anything else that was weak to Water was also usually weak to Grass which Roserade could easily deal with herself. Overall though, I think the main thing that crippled him was the fact that there were three water based HM's that I needed to have on me basically at all times, since Ruby and Sapphire have a lot of sea routes. His move set was basically three water type moves and one Dark type move.

The two shiny Ralts were traded over. I went shiny hunting for one in the lead up to AS/OR, while the other was left over from a few years ago when I tried to do a Gendou Pokemon Tournament and caught one as a prize (the Tournament kind of fell apart unfortunately. >_>). I had Mudkip picked as my starter because my friend wanted me to trade it to him when I told him I was planning on not using the game starters.
