Do Walkthroughs ruin the fun in games?
Link | by Funsch on 2005-07-09 16:01:06
I think walkthrough ruins the fun in games sometimes if you follow it from the beginning to the end. It makes the game more predictable and in complex games it makes it stressful having to do EXACTLY what it says. Also you having to look at the walkthrough while playing the game at the same time, which is a bit of a hassle and it gives you less freedom of trying and experimenting with stuff in the game.

But then again if you're stuck in a part of the game for a long time a walkthrough is very helpful and if you do follow a walkthrough from the beginning to the end you won't regret missing out on any of the game's secrets.

What do you think about walkthroughs?

Walkthrough does ruin the fun, especially if its a game that has a very developed story like adventures and rpg's. You shoould only use it if you are really stuck and tried everything.

If you want to find all the secrets in the game, you could use the walkthrough in a second time you play after you completed the game or when you are almost finishing it. This way it wont ruin the fun and lets you get all of the secrets :D

I hate walkthroughs. Back when I first played FFVII I bought the walkthrough, and it totally took all the surprise out of the game's story. Plus, like Funsch said, it's very hard NOT to do everything EXACTLY as it tells you, which can get rather annoying and tedious. So, no, I don't like walkthroughs.

For RPGs and Adventure games, yes.. I totally agree that it is such a spoiler in that. However, a walkthrough for like a fighting game isn't as bad. It can help you to unlock new combos and skills while your at it.

I say it just depends on the genre of the game.

Re: Do Walkthroughs ruin the fun in games?
YES they do. They take away the difficulty and spoil the ending.

Depending on how you use the walkthrough, it's a great tool; If you find exactly the section you're having trouble with (and I only use them when I'm having trouble), then they make it easy to not waste hours of your time trying hopeless strategies in the game, by giving you the solution.

Following them word for word closely, however, is going to ruin the story unfolding for you (though online there are many "spoiler-free" walkthroughs people may want to look into...).

Of course, the same debate applies to Cheat Codes, and such... I myself use cheat codes after I've gotten the feel of an rpg like an FF, just so I'm less focused on hunting down items to make the ultimate weapon or trying Fifty times to beat some boss, and instead, I can focus on the exciting story and characters themselves;

StriderNeko, just wondering, where do you get these "SPOILER-FREE" guides. You got any websites?

Spoiler-free guides?? Never heard a thing like that, all walkthroughs ruin games with a story, they tell you where to go first, who to kill after... it simply ruins the fun.

... Although if you do look at a faq of a game with a story (like on gamefaqs), usually the first thing you'll see is the title and then the table of contents (which usually has some kind of spoiler). If you skip down the pages really fast, you can not look at the table and skip it and go down to the section you want. It works sometimes, heh.

I think walkthroughs are pretty rotten when it comes to gameplay, but it could be interesting after you finished the game without any tips. Walkthroughs should only be used when you want to play a game again after you finished it.

Not all walkthroughs spoil the game.. unless you're using the ones from Bradygames. But if you go to gamefaqs.com they'll tell you whether or not it's a spoiler. So it really depends. But for the best, if you don't want to spoil the game, then just try and figure it out. o_O

Actually, not all brandy games guides spoil the story either. I don't think guides spoil the game, if anything there really helpful, especially in an RPG.

I mostly get guides for dungeon maps and boss strageies, and maybe side quests and things of that sort.

gamefaqs for me when I want walkthroughs. Dont get me wrong. I remember doing the first 3 duneons in Ocarina of Time then everyhting else by walkthrough. BOY DID I REGRET THAT WHEN I SAW THE ENDING!! I WANTED AN ENDING EARNED!! Hey, but I beat Majora's Mask without one. But like Sapphy said, when it comes to fighting games, I like to use walkthroughs. It helps me know what moves are good and combos. In any adventure and RPG games, I only use walkthroughs for side quests.

although some walkthroughs ruin the game, some are actually a necessity. Take Star ocean: Till the end of time for example; multiple endings, multipole scenes, and multiple events that decide which characters you use and which characters you'll end up leaving behind. The Growlanser series is another example of a game that needs a walkthrough. In these conditions, it's like walking through a maze with no map. Even though some game walkthrhoughs have spoilers, there are usually precautions to make sure that you don't accidentally take a peek at the endings or certain scenes, the table of contents is one example. Another would be flipping the spoilers section upside down (phantom brave strategy guide). So all in all,it depends on the company who distributes the walkthrough, I guess.

Too much ignorance will lead to misfortune. Too much arrogance will lead to death.

I like it when walkthroughs just tell you what to do, and avoid revealing anything about the story and such. I usually use them to solve the more complex and annoying puzzles in some games at night when I'm too tired to figure them out myself.

Hmm walksthroughs do take out some of the surprises in games like who's gonna suddenly appear again and such but I mainly use walkthroughs to find all the treasures because walking around in a big field is really annoying. Oh and the pictures lol yes I buy them for the are that is in cause they're actually pretty good.

i have a rule with playing games which is no help from anyone or anything... so walkthroughs i definitly dont use which i regret sometimes but i have learned to read instructions they tell u in the game based on some pretty frustrating experiences in the past:

FFX-Grid system i didnt use so my sphere lvl is like 80 soemting half way through the game and my stats stay at lvl1. Since i just keep smashing x when ever they give u instructions and i missed the tutorial.

JAK3: i missed the first part where u get the hover board and it tells u to press triangle and u can auto grind on those bars and pipes. i went through 90% of the game w/o using it.......... and i only used my the analog direction buttons to steer stay on those thin pipes<<< good idea for a challenge u should try it if u have jak3.

Well I know sometimes I just want to know the story...
Games at its basic level aside from interactive fun, is trying to tell a story...

So sometimes walkthroughs ruin it, sometimes it doesnt -.-

I never use walkthroughs the first time through a game. On the 3rd or so time around, I'll use one to get all the secrets, but that's it.
NEVER USE A WALKTHROUGH THE FIRST TIME AROUND, EVEN IF YOU'RE STUCK! HUMANS ARE SMART! YOU CAN DO IT!!
