Take a look at the other threads, because this is a question where you can pretty much put together the answer from the other threads relating to this.

My friend bought me a kana book and I started working on it. It's pretty useful considering I had no teacher. As for the construction of sentences...me go figure out later.

Here's tips then I used when I learned German (applied to learning Japanese):

1. Try to find a teacher of some kind. Even friends will do.
2. Speaking of friends, study together.
3. Watch a lot of TV in Japanese. Don't worry if you don't understand at first. I certainly didn't understand Digimon while in Germany at fist but be around the environment at least. Even try going in the Foreign section to look for movies.
4. Listen to a lot of people speak the language. Yeah, that means music too.
5. Read a lot. Literature, kids stories, sing songs, whatever. Luckily, I found tons of Dragon Ball books translated in Germany whenever I wait for my train so I kill time.
6. Go to Japan yourself. I swear thats got to be one of the best ways to start learning a language.
7. Dont abuse what you know. There's always something new to learn so don't show off or anyhting.
8. As for sites, I'm sure you can do a search engine and find something. I can highly assure you there is a free site somewhere. THe hard work is left up to you.

Remember, these are only tips. Probably the most formal way would be to find a teacher. Hope this helps.

Old Man Kai swept the thread.

I "sample" many songs at one time and stick to at least two per day. I repeat the songs over and over to memorize the lyrics, then I read the english translation. Because I'm rotating my songs everyday, I get to compare some of the lyrics with the others, and I find common words like "omae" or learn whole phrases like "furuenagara."

Do not overuse, do not overuse, do not overuse. It needs to be repeated more than that, but I'll settle. It sounded really idiotic when a friend of mine started rattling off lyrics in Japanese to impress me (claiming that she knew Japanese), and I actually knew which song it was.

I'd rather have teacher than a book. But im not that rich... besides im only 11. hehe

hehe ganbatte =p just pursue your dreams and it will come true =D
hmmm compared to you, when i was still at the age of 11 I memorized "ALL" of the anime songs that i have been watching, Yu Yu Hakusho, Evangelion, Detective Conan, Zenki, Jester, Flame of Recca, etc... but i don't know the meaning of even a single word from those songs. hehehe =p I think being able to talk japanese is a lot easier than knowing their meanings. he he he =p

Learn the Kana symbols, then work up on your kanji. I always thought that I had to learn the Kanjis to learn japanese, so I focused on them. My friends all passed me in speaking ability, but after I had mastered Joyo kanji, I wasnt too far behind them, and then blew them away, since they knew practicly no kanji.

Well i'm learning japanese too...but you can first learn the letters and the pronounciation...you can try learning the hiragana or katakana letters, characters, and pronounciation. Kanji is really quite difficult...

Well it`s not so hard, even that I`m still being a beginer that is not too hard, the first I did was to watch a lot of anime because thats the way (Because watching movies was the way I learned to speak english)but that did`nt work, so I searched in the web for a lot of sites with words and expressions and taht helped me a lot, but there is smoething easier to do, you can go yo your local library and search for a beginer`s book and learn with that, i can assure you it`s gonna be easy if you really have interest in learning.

Well,i´ve learned a lot of japanese with the next exercises so try them:
1.Compare the lyrics songs with the translations. You can deduce a lot of meanings this way but of course you need to compare many lyrics because some words may have three or more meanings(it´s hard at first and in my case was much harder because the translations were in english, so i learned english too(yes, i speak spanish)).

2.you can try watching anime in japanese and writting the dialogues in order to compare them with the subtitles, but you better do this when you have a wide vocabulary(i´ve already done this with 2 of my favorite episodes)

3.For the kanjis you can find good dictionaries, words and sentences in internet that are written in kanji, romaji and then translated.you can also find the hiragana and katakana dictionaries(they are very easy to learn), and the kanji version of the lyrics songs too.

4.Finally you can try taking japanese classes(it´s the most simple).

Ganbatte ne!!!

Ano hi ni modoritai...
