in order to read the paper, you need to know several thousand. these days, students have poor hand writing because cell phone and computer technology allow them to choose kanji without knowing the strokes. |

hehee its not that hard. i learned several hundred in a semester. and i only spent maybe 2 hours a day studying. if you spend a few years in japan, you will pick up the kanji real fast. |

dere are only 996 of dese kanji characters that children in japan have to memorise, the education board call them the yojo kanji, they must be learnt within P1 - P6. |

Seems that we all might have to read up on them I remember a website at one point that would teach you in levels and I would just look at them for a little while when and if I can remember I will post it here for those of whom do not have the books like myself. I can never walk in a book store and find them. They are either sold out or they do not carry them. |

Rose has it all wrong. Lol its Jouyou Kanji, and there are 1,945 recomended for daily use by the government, although that doesnt include the 40 or so which were designated JUST for names. Also there are plenty more that are used alot, but not in joyo kanji. |

Boy, am I glad now that although I really hated Chinese as a subject, the bloody schools here were tough enough to pummel me into submission and force the language down my screaming mouth. If I'd known I'll be studying Japanese later in my life, I prolly would've went with it a lil' easier. XD P.S. That's why I really admire and take my hat off to non-Chinese who managed to grasp Kanji. |
