I'm on Dial-Up, because Verizon's DSL services have pretty much told me I have a snowball's chance in hades of getting DSL anytime soon, and Adelphia cable doesn't reach me (I live in the countryside), and I don't ues a dial-up accelerator... (I do use a download *automater* GetRight to automate downloads of software, music, etc... , but *NOT* with this website!! People ask about that all the time, and if they'd only read Gendou's Terms-of-Use, they'd understand that it's not allowed and why); I don't put much stock in the Dial-Up accelerators, as I've seen a manager who had dial-up at my company using an accelerator provided by NetZero, and it wasn't all that great... Most of the Dial-Up accelerators simply make things faster by scaling down things like Pictures, etc... to speed up loading webpages; I don't know that any compression technology or trick could really speed up getting an .mp3 over the web; Have you looked into satellite internet service? There's DirectWay, and WildBlue; You're talking their cheapest plans, 500kbps downstream/128 upstream for $50 a month... (It's not cheap DSL prices, but if DSL doesn't service you and cable doesn't either, it may be an option) |

how about sbc/yahoo dsl, StriderNeko-san? is that available in your area? it's gotten pretty cheap nowadays, it's going for $14.95 a month if you sign up on-line. oh, and gomen, FTY-san. you can always look around download.com and see if you find any to your liking. or you could also look into what i just mentioned earlier about sbc dsl. |

In reply to StriderNeko: Yeah that's what Verizon told us, but here we are at the end of the service line just barely packing at 90kbps, with the line dying every 8 hours or so... Honestly, if there is cable internet access in your area, get it, especially if you have the money for it. I live with my parents in two separate houses. my mom has comcast internet service, and I am pleased with it's 500+ kbps connecton. My father HAD Cox digital cable, which clocked in at about 450 kbps, which was very good at the time. but then he moved out to the middle of nowhere (which funny enough the middle of nowhere is an hour and a half away by car) and its ALL dial-up there, except for our line which is a DSL line at the end of the vein if you know what I mean. I'm happy I'll be going to Virginia Tech, which sports T3 clusters all over the campus... yum... |

It looks as though SBC/Yahoo DSL is similar to things like "Earthlink DSL", etc... If I'm correct and it is, then as I would still need the phone lines in my area (owned/operated by Verizon) to be able to handle the signal, which Verizon confirmed they can't physically handle (after a lovely hour & a half phone call and going through their entire hierarchy of customer service techs, trying to bribe them to get me service :> ) However, I did finally go with a satellite internet solution, and I've scheduled for activation & installation this Friday; It's going to be a bit expensive ($300 for the equipment, and a monthly charge: $50 for 500 kb downstream, $70 for 1 mb downstream, or $80 for 1.5 mb downstream), but it should change *everything* :) I've finally given up on DSL and Cable ever coming my way, and stopped waiting on those pipe dreams; |

Right now I kind-of do that anyway, but not at an Internet Cafe; I have a T1 connection at work, and use a flash drive or just burn a cd of anything I download of considerable size; (Semi-Off-Topic:) And, of course in typical luck for me, here I am about to get my satellite system installed tomorrow, and my secondary hard drive just started failing last night... Sigh... Time for a trip to staples:) |

Just thought I'd let everyone on Dial-Up know that there is hope :D I'm on satellite broadband now, and I'm gettin' kick-@$$ speed!!! And the modem hasn't even finished provisioning itself yet!!! Frickin' sweet!!! Gotta say, best decision I've made in years! |
